Is it? Gold is at an all time high right now. Is this a good time to buy?
Surely it will probably go down a bit???

Krugerrands come in various denominations. There are also other gold coins minted for special events and occurences. (These usually become collector's items and can become worth a lot over time, especially proof coins).
A gold Krugerrand can be traded in conjunction with the gold price.
All special gold and silver coins as well as krugerrands can be purchased directly from the SA Mint. http://www.samint.co.za/

Gold is on a downward slump with oil. Lost about $100 the last few weeks. Could be some profit taking but Kruger Rands are usually a good long term investment.

You would need several coins to buy such a scarce commodity.

You could buy some of my gold coins if you'd like. I have a nice 2008 Natura Presige Proof Set and maybe a 1/4 Oz Kruger Rand Proof coin to get your collection off to a nice start.
Contrary to popular belief teeth isn't a great place to store your gold coins, most banks have vaults where they'd be happy to store your gold for you, expect to pay about R500 per year for a small locker in the bank vault.

which ones are in the 2008 Natura set? I've got many "Giants of Africa" in my collection.

The 2008 Natura is the Elephant and has 1Oz, 1/2Oz, 1/4Oz and 1/10th Oz 24ct Gold I think. I haven't had a look at then in a while now so I'm not 100% sure. I have a very nice set which I'm so glad I own, it's the 2007 Mandela De Klerk Proof set. I couldn't have made a better investment than that, unfortunately I only have one :(

All time high? :D Tell me another joke, please.
Gold fell to below $800 per fine ounce. The all-time high is around $1000 per fine ounce.
I have a damn old R1 coin. Worth a crap load of money now.

Which one? My uncle holds an ultra rare 1965 Proof - and it's worth a fortune.
I wanted to buy in 2001 when it was $250 oz.... I was like nah maybe when its cheaper. Damn I was a stupid 17 year old!!

It's a 1969. The 1965 is worth a heck of a lot more than the 1969 but both are pretty nice. I saw a 1969 that went at bidorbuy for R49.... wish I was there to take it. I've seen some go for R1000+

I found out a while ago that my late grandmother had 49 Krugers in a deposit somewhere. Good thing that the gold price is on fire atm.:D
silkman: Krugers are worth as much as their weight in gold. The coin form itself has almost no value. So you'd be betting directly on the gold price going up.

According to the legend, the Kruger millions are buried somewhere in the Lowveld area.
Maybe we should form a search party ...

If you buy Kruger Rands your investment will be linked to the gold price, maybe a little bit more. If you buy collectors coins like the 2007 Mandela/De Klerk Proof set and other collector/limited edition coins it sells for a lot more than the gold content. The 2007 Mandela/De Klerk sets are selling for more than R25K and sold for only +/- R10700 when bought new. The gold content of this set is relatively low compared to the Natura sets, but sells for more. You have to look at the whole picture when you want to invest in gold coins, do your homework and you could see some serious growth in the long term.

Fantastic thread, I am glad I stumbled upon this
With regard to Mandela coins, i bought the Mandela 90th Birthday 2oz Gold coin from SA Gold coin for R36,000 at launch price and now its market value is R48,000 only about 3 months later. There were only 900 made , so im hoping this really takes off with time
I think anything with Mandela on it, will be worth some good money in the middle term
Any thoughts?
