View Full Version : Best colour for new car ?

I am looking at a couple of new car models that I might purchase - but cant really decide what to choose in terms of colour.
I find the darker shades look more flashy, but I imagine that darker colours need more frequent washing and will show scratches easier.
I believe it is also more expensive to insure darker colour cars - any ideas on average how much more?
On the other hand I have been told that white or light colour cars are more of a highjack threat as the car will blend in with all the other cars around and literally dissapear.
So what from other people's experiences are the pro's and con's of light or dark coloured cars?
Any particular car? They all have their own colours and look good in different colours.

Never been asked for the colour of my car when getting insurance so can't imagine that being a factor. Darker cars do however get much hotter when parked in the sun and as you say will show dirt and scratches more than a lighter colour.
Personally I don't believe that a light colour car will be any more of a hijack risk than a dark car, sounds like an urban legend to me. Comes down to what you think looks best, what colour you like most on a specific model.

Silver and White appear to stay cleaner in my experience. Red cars go faster.
If you are buying new (or used I guess) you can fit that anti-hijack film but I don't think color make a difference. Hijacked car are ordered so if the buyer wants white he'll order it white.
I have been asked the color when insuring a car. When asked why I was told that certain colors have a higher risk profile because they are more difficult to see at dusk. I think that is insurance co BS.

Black and Dark Blue, although they look really hot in my opinion, is a BIG nono. They show dirt and dust way too well, unfortunately.

Silver / White is a good choice, depending on the conditions that you will drive the car, and also what car you will drive. White / light coloured cars also appear bigger than darker cars - but like I said, depends on the make and model...

You should get a white one. Done... I only get white ones they look good plain and simple, even after 10 years
Now, black & even red cars attract alot of attention... dont you think you will attract the hijacker's attention as well? White cars are easier to sell secondhand, trust me have experience with this.
You can have it in any colour as long as its White and these days maybe just maybe black but thats all but mostly white

Ferrari - Must be Red. (but they look nice in dark silver charcoal color you get and yellow)
Lambo - Can only be Yellow
Porsche - Black (I think) and it should be a 911 otherwise it's not really a Porsche.
BMW M3 - Yellow or Black
BMW M5 - Metallic Light Blue
AMG any - Black
Land Rover Defender - Cream or Army Green
Am I right?

lol. Actually there is a guy my neighborhood (Tygervalley) who has been driving one one up and down Durban Rd recently. A white Murcielago. Very nice but not a real lambo color.

I stand corrected. Honestly have never been asked on the 3 different cars I have had insured. I wonder if the type of car decides whether or not the question is asked, with mine it probably didn't matter.

Wine Red & black are worse in terms of safety.
I'd go for white/silver.
I doubt that the insurance will differ.

Silver looks new, hides scratches.
White looks new, but also like you're working for some government department.
Although, my favourite looking colours on a car is gun-metal grey or bright blue.

the car that I am actually eyeing quite closely now is the Suzuki SX4.
It is fairly priced at R 163 900.00 with 90 000km service plan and is packed with features.
They have a colour called bluish black which I think would maybe make it look a bit more classy - am I gonna have to wash this car like everyday. All my other cars have been boring white or silver colours.

Not really sure why anyone would buy the golf if they could get an Audi A3 2.0T for the same price ... but that's just me :/
