I've been reading up a bit... Saw your pics of your P&S vs the 6MP_DSLR. What DSLR do you have just for interest sake?
Edit: LOL @ K-1000 :p
Looking at the Finepix S700 at the moment ... its like R1700 at incredible corruption.
Just looking for now ok, don't throw me with stuff if I'm looking at the wrong stuff - I'm a n00b in this field. :o

Those pics were with a Pentax K100D Super, which now enjoys the undivided attention of my old man. I shoot with a Canon 40D.
Sorry I can't really comment on sub R2000 P&S cameras. The one I have is way over that, and the ones I take interest in are generally on the higher end of the spectrum. I have heard good things about the Canons though, and my sis has a Sony Cybershot DSC-W55 which also produces very nice pictures and (I think) is much cheaper.
What I will tell you, is if you find an older model, but higher end 6MP camera, and a newer, lower-end 10MP, for the same price, the older one will probably take better pictures. My older Sony DSC-S40 4MP definitely produces (resolution aside) better results than my 8MP DSC-T100 in low light.

The Canon Powershot A590 IS should fall within your price range.

Yep, it does - looking into it now. Any comments on the S700 bwana?

For those self portraits where you don't really need to look your best because no one would be able to recognise you anyway :)

Well, it is better than nothing in those "ZOMW! Would you look at that!!"-situations. Although after taking them you see you just wasted your time.
I/We just need a camera that would take OK pictures - Just a bit above the average P&S would be preferred. Also my brother is having their "Matriek Afskeid" soon, so this looks like the best time to get a 'proper-ish' camera.
My dad is liking this S700 at the moment though. @R1700 it looks like a good buy. Dunno
So many choices
So little time

I'm with Bwana on the Canon 590 IS. Check out more cams here:

Interesting that SACamera don't even have the Fuji S700 in their price list. Incredible found a batch of old stock somewhere?
