I have just started up a Dynamic DNs site local to South Africa.[8D]
http://dynamic-dns.co.za/
I currently give a 30 day evaluation period, as well as 3 payment options of R100 for one year, R180 for two year and R260 for three years.[:I]
Due to cost's of bandwidth, I am unable to provide this as a free service.[:(]
Current Clients are for Windows and Linksys Routers.
A perl based client for Linux users should be available shortly.
Thanks
Re-post once your perl/Linux facility available - as a small but relevant criticism, you should be providing service parity amongst platforms...

I dont like to say this, and I know people will flame me.
but, why would people pay for a dynamic DNS service when so many places provide it for free? Unless it provides something more that I'm unaware of?
Then again most of the free Dynamic DNS services are very crummy..

I'm willing to support any local initiative of this nature, purely for social responsibility reasons (read: local development)...

I see you allow that a client can make use of their OWN domain name. Is tthere an extra costs to this. AND how many domain names can I use for the R100 a year.
Thanks

Considering the fact that Dynamic DNS services in the USA although fine when uncapped, are not alway reachable by the Client on your PC once you are capped.
I used to use No-IP and got sick of the amount of time's that the client could not connect or took ages to connect.
At R100.00 / year (Less than R10.00) / month fast reachable DNS updates are available with the average mean time for an update being less than 60 seconds.
Keep in mind that Bandwidth in South Africa comes at a premium and the R100/year pretty much covers that.
The Free Dynamic DNS providers also use advertising to pay the bill, which is currently not an option for us at the moment.
30 day's should be more than enough to evaluate the service and see if you are happy with it.

newbee, you can use your own domain name @ no extra cost. It is only each individual account that incures the yearly cost.
Check: http://dynamic-dns.co.za/Services.htm for more information.

Do not use this site. The supplied software does not work. Service is really bad. Don't waist your money on this site.

Dont' worry, we won't. With hard-capping, local dynamic DNS is pretty useless now.

You guys don't see the bigger picture..I've got a bundle of clients with VPNs running over ADSL. The Ip's connecting the WANs to LAN are dynamic but the VPNs are all local traffic cutting down on the bandwidth accounts needed.
U cannot use a local only account as this need to update an international server. So having a local dyndns server , I can use the local traffic accounts cos the dyndns doesn't have to update overseas. Hence huge cost saving which I pocket every month. Well done Garfield, will take you to Teazers with the proceeds.

No thank you, I will rather stick with Zoneedit, at least they can provide SERVICE and a decent interface. And just like nic777 said, local DNS is pretty useless now ole chap.
Others dream, Zoneedit and DynDNS deliver!

Why open up a 3 year old thread? The resurrection occurred courtesy of an advert that has since been removed.

I posted the ad. Sorry. I didn't realise it would resurrect the thread or annoy anyone. I actively thought it might be useful.
The DDNS ad I posted is local so it works for local-only ADSL accounts which I don't think existed 3 years ago.
Old thread I know but what exists locally to use when I am capped?

any one know of a local DynDNS type of site...?
the guy who opened this thread should reconsider going back into business (seeing that his site is offline, i assume he's out of business).
A local DNS site is necessary,as:
1) lag time is less...
2) cheap local bandwidth can be used
3) many uses for local DNS sites: CCTV Monitoring, VOIP, DSL Bonding, Branch to branch linkup etc...many many more uses..
Buddy (guy who initiated this thread), if you dont plan going back into business, sell me your server, I'll use it for my clients (internal use) only..
Send me a PM..

Many ISPs now automatically provide you with a DNS name when you buy an account from them. So the a Dynamic DNS site becomes useless.
Also most of the routers won't be able to support the site as the info needs to be added to the router's firmware by the manufacturer.
