Quick excerpt:
Pretoria - Pretorius Street, one of the main roads cutting through Pretoria, should be renamed after former Cuban president Fidel Castro, the SA Communist Party said on Monday.
Speaking at a public hearing at Pretoria's City Hall, SACP member Joan Muller said Schoeman Street should also be renamed after Cuban revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara.
"We must not forget our Cuban allies," she told a small gathering of people who arrived at the hearing on the changing of 27 street names in the city.

What a thick bunch of @holes - any terrorist, dictator, ..... name will do.
I wonder how many currently disadvantaged people could be helped with all that money it costs to change these names - if only the disadvantaged masses could see through this farce and vote accordingly.

Castro Road?
WTF are these people smoking? Cuban cigars laced with dagga?
But, that is the trend on this continent, so I don't see why it would be any different in South Africa.

Viva Fidel Viva! Viva ANC Viva! Viva SACP Viva! Long live the Workers! Viva, viva Viva!
Its coming guys, the Red South Africa. Africa will do it where Europeans failed. We'll make communism succeed! Viva! Viva Comrades!
'pregressive' road names for our 'enlightened' nation
IIRC there's a road named after great comrade Castro in Durban as well
Don't worry though the poor Americans could well be in the same boat as us soon

Wow, I'm sure every ex-SADF must be loving this. Much to the delight of the ANC no doubt.
I think when it comes to pass someone must add this to the road signs: FIDEL CASTRO's forces got gang banged when they tried to invade this continent

Yes we are great friends with Cuba. Together we hold the top spots to crime levels of all types of crimes in the world.
Is that what they are aspiring to?

Wait, so this is just a proposal?
Why does this thread make it sound like it is TO BE renamed...
Can we have some accurate quoting here guys?
Wait, so this is just a proposal?
Might just be a proposal, but knowing the ANC, they will change the name. They are only "consulting" on what it is going to be.

Using money for progress is in effect against the principles of communists. It's a race to the bottom to make everyone equally poor. That way nobody can ever offend or "oppress" anybody else, you see, by having more money.

This was just a statement, and by the SACP not the ANC. Not worth taking seriously, as the SACP aren't very powerful in SA, and the ANC already has a more concrete plan to rename all the major streets in Pretoria to other names.

You are correct Colin, er Alan, Moore Road in Durban has already been renamed to Fidel Castro Road.
But I would not worry about it too much, they are spending too much money renaming the roads that they have no money to maintain or repair them so the roads will all be unusable by 2010 anyway.

Maybe it has something to do with this :
From http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB67/
Conflicting Missions provides the first comprehensive history of the Cuba's role in Africa and settles a longstanding controversy over why and when Fidel Castro decided to intervene in Angola in 1975. The book definitively resolves two central questions regarding Cuba's policy motivations and its relationship to the Soviet Union when Castro astounded and outraged Washington by sending thousands of soldiers into the Angolan civil conflict. Based on Cuban, U.S. and South African documents and interviews, the book concludes that:
# Castro decided to send troops to Angola on November 4, 1975, in response to the South African invasion of that country, rather than vice versa as the Ford administration persistently claimed;
# The United States knew about South Africa's covert invasion plans, and collaborated militarily with its troops, contrary to what Secretary of State Henry Kissinger testified before Congress and wrote in his memoirs.
# Cuba made the decision to send troops without informing the Soviet Union and deployed them, contrary to what has been widely alleged, without any Soviet assistance for the first two months.

I used to get upset about this issue, but not any more. My mind set has changed. When I drive past a dirty, dilapidated, useless and crumbling state hospital and I see that it has been named after a "hero", I can't help but smile. Same goes for certain airports.

Can you imagine handing over a business card to a potential international dealer with your business address as Fidel Castro St?
Strange...

If you look at past proposals to rename for example an airport or abolish a certain crime fighting unit, what is the chance of this only staying a proposal ?
A PROPOSAL has been made to rename Johannesburg International Airport in honour of ANC stalwart Oliver Tambo. The public is urged to comment.

Not to wonder about this really random starting post but,
Logically WHY do you think naming a street in a Democratic country after a Communist dictator is an awesome change?

Makes no sense.
You'll have to ask the SACP, who proposed the name change.

I'm so sick of people that *blindly* support everything that is anti-western. Why don't you then stop using/enjoying everything that comes from the west? And I mean everything!
PS. Did you know that personal computers were banned in Cuba until about 5 months ago???? Would you like to live like that? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7381646.stm
Normal citizens are not allowed to stay in hotels in their own country? Oh, but it's OK, because they are anti-western....
Stupid idiots (people that support Castro), that's all I can say.

Why do we have Street Named after Racists? Change the Names I say , and Fidel Castro is an awesome name change.
You do know that Fidel is a Communist and that means an atheist and
Muslim countries which became communist forcefully did away with Islam?
Pls do some research before you open your mouth and embarass yourself,
under Shariah law advocating calling an anti-Muslim a hero should get you
into some deep trouble .
