Hi folks

I am quite amazed that Telkom is continuing with the ‘staff cut’ policy in the midst of such high profits. Spare a thought for many of the highly competent technical and other Telkom employees that will lose their jobs for the sake of satisfying shareholders (many of whom are sitting overseas profiting for the situation in SA). It is not surprising that both the public and Telkom employees are experiencing the problems that accompany a legally protected monopoly being listed nationally and internationally.

Like I've been saying all along - FIRE THE ASSES OF THEIR STRATEGIC AND OPERATIONAL DECISION-MAKERS!!!

I have absolutely no respect for those who consider "profitability" to be of a higher priority than other aspects of good governance, which INCLUDES ensuring the stability of the staffing establishment, fair labour practices, etc. You will note that I've put "profitability" in quotes - there are inescapable dependencies that underpin profitability, not least ensuring that you have a happy and stable workforce. By ignoring this, you are actually threatening profitability, not promoting it - which is why I reiterate: FIRE THE ASSES OF THEIR STRATEGIC AND OPERATIONAL DECISION-MAKERS!!!

(And this includes not only Sizwe Nxasana and his immediate cohorts, but also those with vested interests in the abortion we call our state telco - suppliers, empowerment partners, consultants, and so on.) IT'S ABOUT TIME THIS MONOPOLY IS EXPOSED FOR WHAT IT IS - AN ORGANISATION THAT DOES NOT FULFIL ITS PUBLIC SERVICE MANDATE AND IGNORES ITS SOCIETAL DEVELOPMENT OBLIGATIONS!!

And yet they retrench people while they are making big profits. 178% increase in earnings over last year. I would assume these retrenchment packages are to make the company more profitable. What do the want then, 278% increase in earnings next year? I’m going to say this now and night get flak for it, but it's probably closest to the truth in SA at the moment. If Mr Sizwe Nxana was a white dude, we would hear big pleas of "foul cry" from all quarters. Also the state that owns 70% of Telkom permits these types of practices in its own company should be rapped over the knuckles for increasing the Unemployment Figures. They have such double standards. It's really sickening.

For Example. I have too many people in my own business, 16 at present. All these people rely on me to provide a wage for them. No one thanks me (state) for providing them with employment and I haven’t the heart to retrench them either. So when business is bad, I draw from the bond to keep everyone happy. Thus hopefully when times are good, they might reciprocate the gesture.
In Telkom's case they are riding the gravy train with no end in sight either.

What gets to me most of all is that all of this nonsense happens in a country where the goverment has promised its people jobs.

I can't believe that Telkom gets away with this. I can understand if job cuts were on the card because they are trying to make a change in the cost of their service to the customer, but not even this is happening. Creating less jobs to increase profits and provide below international standard service THAT IS PATHETIC. Wonder if the Department of Labour and Department of Trade and Industry is seeing all of this[?][?][?]

You forget, Telkom's latest dividend just paid the Departments of Labour and Trade and Industry off...typical politicians - "screw the country, show me the money!"

Telkom needs a leash, ICASA needs some guts, and the SA consumer needs to make it happen

I don't know if this has crossed anyone's mind but it certainly has mine when I saw this article.. What if telkom are increasing their profits to dessimate any compition being implimented i.e. Telkom right now make 49% more profit, SNO launches in March and telkom drop their prices 50-70% where SNO can't match prices. Telkom loses on it's profits but in the end SNO closes due to lack of business.Kinda like a self subsidy as it were. Or maybe I'm just talking out of place here.

Your story has merit, but the SNO won't close down because people like myself and you are going to support them even if its 2c more per call or whatever pans out. The moment I get a chance I'm going to drop Telkom because of the pricing abuse and slapgat service we have had to endire for decades. It's the principle of the thing.
But truthfully I think the SNO will be just Telkom Number 2 IMO.

Look at it this way - we have 46,000,000 peepz in this country - and just over 500,000 active phone lines. Isn't that less +-1%??...

So in reality 99% of the country cant afford Hellkom's prices. Most of the lines are business lines no doubt.

Hellkom are contributing towards unemployment by
A) their ludicrous prices and
B) retrenching staff at a rate of over 10% per year
