I noticed something interesting today. Photozone (http://www.photozone.de) has recently replaced their 350D with a 50D for tests. Klaus just re-tested the 17-85mm lens. It's interesting to see the two reviews side by side. What grabbed my attention, in particular, is that corner sharpness is also higher on the 50D, something I didn't expect. Here are the reviews:
Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 USM IS - 350D (http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/179-canon-ef-s-17-85mm-f4-56-usm-is-test-report--review)
Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 USM IS - 50D (http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/402-canon_1785_456is_50d)
It looks like this lens' only weekness is the rather bad barrel distortion at the wide end. On the 50D it's [edit:] almost as sharp on the corners as it was in the center on the 350D - not bad!
