Just to let you all know that we have just received confirmation from several TV and radio sources that SpaceShipOne has succeeded in its mission to become the first privately constructed and operated craft to reach space.

The craft was flown by Mike Melvill, vice president and chief test pilot for Scaled Composites, the builders of SpaceShipOne.

Just for those who might find it interesting, Mike has 19 years of experience as a test pilot and is now 62 years of age. He is also a native of South Africa, but has been living in the United States for the last 25 years.

Anybody want to support me in nominating Mike for one of these "great South African" awards? He's certainly earned it, along with his astronaut wings.

Congratulations Mike and thank goodness for your safe return to earth after a flawless flight. Now we can all go too. [:D]

Information on Scaled Composites and SpaceShipOne is at http://www.scaled.com/

Hate to break it to you, but um, he isn't South African... for a few decades now.

Good job though. And thanks Microsoft. :) Or more accurately, Paul Allen.

Rubbish Jerrek,

If he was born in South Africa how can he not be South African? Our own President and most of his cabinet were also out of the country for decades, are they no longer South African.

Congratulations Mike, White Knight and Space Ship One.
Strange that the web site hasn't been updated yet!!! Must be too busy celebrating.

Jerrek,

Please note how I stated he'd been living there for the past 25 years, doesn't mean he isn't South African though.

He has American citizenship. Unless he obtained that in the last 7 years, he doesn't have South African citizenship. That makes him 100% American. He moved to the United States from England in the 1970s, in fact.

Jerrek's right ppl, he's a US citizen that was born in SA - so South Africa has no right to claim him as a South African...gee I wonder why he left...

lewstherin,

I guess it's because we don't have enough bandwidth to e-mail around schematics of SpaceShipOne. [:D]
