Cape Town - Telkom is to introduce a special "e-rate" for schools that will effectively halve the cost of their internet calls, Communications Minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri announced on Monday.

Opening debate on her budget vote in the National Assembly, she said arrangements for this would be finalised between the communications and education departments over the next few months.

"From the beginning of the next school year, public schools will be charged only 50% of the normal rate for their internet calls.

She said this was being done to "facilitate the adoption and usage of the internet" in the country's schools, which would be able to access needed educational material.

Further, communications, together with the National Treasury, would "finalise a public-private partnership for the funding of regional television services that will broadcast in the official languages that do not find sufficient coverage in the present broadcasting system".

Matsepe-Casaburri said her department, together with parliament, the community radio sector and the Government Communications and Information Service (GCIS), would launch a satellite communication network, aimed at communities.

"This network will make it possible for grass roots communities, through their community stations, to access the workings of parliament, government information and services, as well as news about other communities and general national developments."

She said over the next three years the Post Office would install an extra 600 public internet terminals, to enable ordinary people "to enjoy the convenience of also using the internet for accessing government services and information".

50% off is what the public should should have had all along.
100% off is what schools should get.

Still it's a good start.

Internet Calls? One presumes it's ISDN dial up then....

It should be free, Telkoms gesture to the future of this country.
I wonder whos gonna pay for it...!!

This is a conversation happening at Telkom HQ as we type these topic responses:

MANAGER: "Okay, so we managed to get the minister to ease off with the SNO by making this concession."

TECHIE: "Yessir. Stupid woman, to think it was that easy! Ha ha ha!"

MANAGER: "How can we ballance the finances to make up the loss?"

TECHIE: "Well sir, we have this userbase of ADSL customers."

MANAGER: "Yes? [with evil grin]"

TECHIE: "We can do what we did last time sir, give them false usage stats and charge them for extra accounts!"

MANAGER: "Will this make up the loss?"

TECHIE: "Ten times over sir. Will I get a promotion for this?"

MANAGER: "Consider it done..."

Agreed.

The little story that Antowan told us now is probably not to far away from the reality in Telko. They are probably reviewing all their products to see who they can squeeze for more money.

Probably find that it doesn't include ISDN , only analogue calls as International bandwidth is expensive you know!

What is interesting is if one looks at the GuatengOnline project which was won by Sentech ... this looks distinctly like anti-competitive behaviour.

Easy way to undermine the Sentech deal is to offer better pricing by Telkom... nawty nawty

Anything that undermines Sentech can't be all that bad, now can it?
Just kidding [:)]

If Sentech got the GautengOnline project, then shouldn't it rather be dubbed the GautengNotOnline project? "You're connected, but not really" would make a neat slogan.
