Considering it's Guy Fawkes does anyone have any tips they want to share?

Only one... make sure you're damn fast :p
I remember trying to photograph the lightning in the Drakensberg once... found it close to impossible. The lightning only had to travel 50-100-odd metres which caused it to be lightning quick, excuse the pun.

Remember to include the ATM as a stop, as you will need money to pay the fine for the illegal shooting of fireworks. ;)
PS - If you were planning to do this far away from a built-up area, then go crazy.

With Diwali just a week ago and Guy Fawkes approaching, the fireworks in London have been going pretty much non stop. Pity I didn't get around to go shoot some :D
@bwana, I've tried both short and long shutter times. My best shot (and one of few keepers out of about 2000 shots that night) was at 1 second and f/8 with the 24-105L
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3154/2913993275_a368e4febc_m.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/koffiejunkie/2913993275/)
If I have to think of ways to improve that shot I would go do 1/2 sec and f/5.6, and take it half a second later :) I also tried with the nifty fifty wide open, with a much shorter shutter time, but I was disappointed.
BTW, do they do Guy Fawkes in the U.S.? I'll be there by the time it gets dark :)

Thanks :) That's really cool!
Man.. I really wanna get one of the DSLR's ....What can you guys recommend?
Do they take considerably better photos out of the box than say a 8MP Sony Cybershot? (thats a stupid question right? :p )
Are they fairly easy to use? Would you say I have to attend classes and that?

No not always, no, no and ... no (imo at least). A dslr just provides you with more freedom & control regarding your photos. But they could provide you with better photos if you know your stuff a bit. If you hand a pro a P&S and dslr, he would probably get a better shot with the dslr. Spending time with your camera, imo at least, is better than attending classes. I only say that cause classes == $$. Something I don't have. :p

if you go to opening of the season where would u shoot? would you be on the beach front right up on the action? i think there's quite a nice view from Fort Fredrick

a tripod and a long exposure time, a nice grainy film works as well and even try a few in b&w (you will be surprised) <<< I will be shooting some tonight on 35mm, with a standard SLR no digital :)

ooh thats nice! you'll get some nice shots there. at least there won't be anybody bumping your camera or attempting to steal your gear ;)
how would you get clear shots of the fireworks from a boat? won't the rocking of the boat also affect the pictures?

good point - that's also my only concern with taking pics from a boat - 10 second exposures won't work too well no matter how fancy your tripod is :P need some fancy auto leveling one :)

haha the skipper is just going to have to jump up and down to try and counter the rocking of the boat :D
this will be my first time trying this so hope i get some good results :)

Your shots look good small. You say "Best Viewed Large" on each of them but I see no 'all sizes' button. What's the deal?

ah, my bad. i used to provide access to the original full sizes of my images, but then people started using them without asking. so have since restricted full sizes to friends/family only on my contact list.

Actually I've stopped uploading anything I dont want misused and anything I do upload is of the lowest possible size/quality. Pity so many people dont respect copyright and think that just because it is online that it is fair game.
