Anyone on this forum listen to hip hop/gangster rap? EG 50 Cent, Akon, TI, etc.

I love it.

Anyone heard the new single from TI featuring Rihanna - Live Your Life? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nycdoWHd_2I

It's really great, also Whatever You Like - TI.

Mmmm mmm I love it.

I don't know, the sampling thing really gets to me. It's so damn integrityless. And yes, the song you mentioned is a prime example. The first time it started i though it was the Kurt Darren version(the original was by some holland pop star.)

But i like some Snoop and Pharell, also with his band thingy N*E*R*D. Everybody Nose is pimping.

Maybe i should check out some underground stuff, i've seen and heard about some pretty colourful characters in the hip-hop underground scene.

Get some Necro :D

If you're getting into hiphop the last thing you need to listen to is Necro who is an acquired taste.

I'd start someone off with some DJ Premier for the beats and perhaps some New York rap from the mid 90s- think Mobb Deep, Biggie, Fugees, Onyx, Fu-Schnickens, Heltah Skeltah, Lords of the Underground, The Roots and A Tribe Called Quest.

After building up your foundation, you can get into some gangsta ish like Ice T( recommended album "Home Invasion"), if you can stomach the misogyny you can listen to NWA, Ice Cube, Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg.

Personally I prefer anything abstract, make no mistake I love dancing to a catchy beat but when I'm chilling at home after work nothing beats MF DOOM, Keith Murray or Blackalicious.:D

I'll snag myself some underground cred. by mentioning Wu Tang Clan, even tho they're probably known by most people. MF Doom seems like an interesting character, with that helmet thing he wears.

And i have a Necro track. Very low-fi and quite boring. Lyrics are a little sick, i'll admit.

Akon....

I can appreciate him and perhaps listen to a couple of songs but there's no way I can listen for more than 30 minutes. Too much politics.

On the other hand, I can listen to MF DOOM the whole day coz his subject matter is quite broad, from chicks to politics to money....and plus his abstract so if you don't know **** its unlikely you'll know what he's rapping about.

Another artist that everyone should try and listen to is Big L...check out his posthumous masterpiece- The Big Picture.

Make no mistake, TI makes music for the club but I have my doubts whether it would still sound as nice in five years.Very few people would fork out cash for his albums...when it comes to MF DOOM or anything from Stonesthrow Records you know 9/10 you're buying quality.

They say hip hop is dead, but only to those who arent really listening, there is so much good music out there its just a little harder to find. Underground is the way to go now days 'cos the commercial stuff is so predictable and gives hip hop a bad name...

T.I, Lil What, Akon... seriously when will the whining stop.
Im not bashing your guys taste, but try step away from whats easily available and look around, if like me your on the net all the time there is soo much available. I havent purchased a CD in over 15 years (thats a whole notha convo right there)and have more friends hooking music(for free) from me than that would make musica pale.

brixton tower gives some sound advice, but dig a little deeper and experiment with names/MC's you've never heard of.
@ Blue Collar, im down with IT but his latest album is weak IMO.

I'll drop some names up in here i hope none of you lot have heard of, hope you will check some out...
Jedi Mind Tricks- the entire crew; Vinnie Paz, Sloan, Outerspace, Doap Nixon, they make awesome beats( by Stoup), especially Vinnie Paz' work.

Ill Bill, La Coka Nostra, one of my all time favorites, actually Necro's big brother-doesnt sound too similar, the sound is menacing like Necro but more on a beat trip with solid lyrics and production.

Killah Priest, Chief Komachi, The Last Emperor, Percee P some more awesome underground cats.

Sage Francis, Buck65, Rob Sonic holding it down for the white boys. Sage Francis gets a little political and heavy but his sound is truly unmatched for his genre.

If you are just into beats, instrumentals and easy listening, try DJ Shadow, RJD2, Madlib, Organized Mess.

You guys should kick in with some cunninlynguists, Nappy Roots, Devin the Dude, Zion I(all from the South)...super mellow stuff and quite refreshing.

and not to forget Ewok, an MC from Durban. totally awesome for a whiteboy south african.

Obviously all of this is my personal preferance, but i hope someone will find some real hip hop in this for themselvs. why should i always be the one distributing the good stuff amongst friends.

I aint advertising or nothing, but if you want to sample some of what ive mentioned hit me up with a PM.

I find a lot of that stuff you listed quite boring. I mean the lyrics are sometimes really good, but more often than not, the song is not notable as there is nothing catchy about it.

EDIT: Although I do really like Sage Francis.

I know all those guys, didn't want to alienate too many people on here by name-dropping but since we seem to be a knowledgeable bunch here's some more artists you guys should check out.

Little Brother
Blackalicious
Juggaknots
Arsonists
Tha Liks aka Tha Alkaholiks
Kool Keith( fav album: Dr Octagon)
Handsome Boy Modeling School(peep both their albums)
Del Tha Funky Homosapien(peep Deltron 3030- one of the best concept albums)

Chances are that you won't get these artists at your music chain, so your best bet would be to download.

I like the new Nas album. Felt it was a bit of a breath of fresh air into the hiphop genre with Lil' Wayne and all the others being around .

Nice flow, ok lines, a couple tracks I personally liked: Trust and You wouldnt understand. All in all. A solid 6.5\10. Maybe a 7. Compared to some of the other offerings available.

Pooky if you want to hear gansta rap bro, download westside connection(mostly ice cube and mac 10) and canibus. Obviously with the other bigger names like tupac, biggie, dre, eminem along with most of the guys eminem has helped like 50 cent, the game etc. You have to go back to those days.

Gangsta rap is not dead. If you want to listen to a lyrical genius i suggest you download all of the albums canibus has released. westside connection is about as gansta as you will get :D.

There are so many like redman, methodman, dmx, ll cool j. Geez so many good gangsta rappers. NAS is also highly recommended but many but i never enjoyed his stuff.

If you're in Cape Town and are on the lookout for Hip Hop orientated parties - lookout for KickBack on Facebook.
They do DJ workshops before each show too and give back to the community from proceeds from the events.
Will find them at Zula Soundbar most of the time.

DJ Juice and Tekneek are off the chain!

Defnitely agree with you man. DMX's 1st 3 albums is what lured me to rap. Then came Eminem with his Marshall Mathers LP and I also started listening to Bustah Rhymes. So yah....lotta cool gangsta a$$ rappers.:D

Been listening to OutKast quite a lot lately and I must say that music is timeless. Big Boi and Dre really are a talented bunch and its translated really well into Big Boi's last 2 albums (Sir Luscious Leftfoot: The Son of Chico Dusty and Viscious Lies and Dangerous Rumours), that funky hard hitting rap. I do wish they would do one last album

The thing I love about Hip Hop are the lyrics in some of the songs. Some weird and funny, some cool and brilliant.

Here's one of my favourite verses from Usher's "Make Love In This Club" featuring Young Jeezy. This is Young Jeezy's verse:

Have you ever made love to a thug in the club with his sights on?
87 Jeans and a fresh pair of Nikes on
On the couch, on the table, on the bar, or on the floor
You can meet me in the bathroom yeah you know I'm tryna go

This is one of my favourites:

OK, drop it to the floor
Make that ass shake
Woah make the ground move, that’s an ass quake
Built a house up on that ass, that’s an ass state
Roll my weed on it, that’s an ass tray

Been listening to OutKast quite a lot lately and I must say that music is timeless. Big Boi and Dre really are a talented bunch and its translated really well into Big Boi's last 2 albums (Sir Luscious Leftfoot: The Son of Chico Dusty and Viscious Lies and Dangerous Rumours), that funky hard hitting rap. I do wish they would do one last album

Yeah they were great. But I think they didn't part on good terms at all and it may be they never get back.

So seems like people are literally taking shots at Rick Ross:
http://www.local10.com/news/Rapper-Rick-Ross-target-of-drive-by-shooting/-/1717324/18303142/-/format/rsss_2.0/-/a7hsng/-/index.html

I remember late last year, a street gang (the one formed by Larry Hoover) posted footage threatening his life if he didn't pay up some money owed to them because of some sort of deal/situation

Tsume funnily enough, I'm listening to the track Rock Bottom off the Slim Shady LP, inspired by STS recent post. One of my favourite tracks of his off his best album.

Anyone listen to Childish Gabino? Heard him while going through Youtube and he is pretty awesome in my opinion.

That's the comedian acting in community. Didn't know that he was a rapper as well.

He's pretty sick, you should check him out on the 2012 BET Cypher. Also I'd recommend Yelawolf and Hopsin to you guys

Thoughts on A$AP Rocky?

First posts should always be about Rap(personal rule)
Rocky is more worried about what he has on in a video. His first single(can't get to the name) Was grimy but he a fashion nut. So when you want to talk about "new comers" in the world or mainstream rap, you have to mention my doe Kendrick Lamar. Changing the game and imo reviving the mainstream.

As far as the term "Gangsta rap" goes...It has to be the most misinterpreted words in Hip Hop(and there are millions) 50cent can be classified as "Gangsta Rap"..MAYBE. if you look into the unpopular tracks on each one of his albums. The singles are normally what people wanna hear but not who the artist is, club or females.

and HIP HOP is NOT dead! It's alive and well. It just moved to the underground for good.

If you want REAL hip hop. take a look at dudes like Immortal Technique, Diabolic, Kid Sin, Vinnie Paz, Celph Titled, Jedi Mind tricks, Army Of The Pharaohs etc.

My 2 cents
