Objective measurements of RAW images are an essential basis for any analysis of digital cameras, but such measurements were neither possible nor available until now. DxO Labs has developed a new scale for digital camera image quality performance, called DxOMark Sensor, to serve as an additional tool to help photographers rank and compare digital cameras.
This scale is based on three underlying metrics, Color Depth, Dynamic Range and Low-Light ISO, each one tied to a real-life photographic scenario: landscape, studio & portrait, and photojournalism & sport.

Read more (http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/eng/DxOMark-Sensor/DxOMark-metrics)This interactive graph shows the ranking for approximately 50 currently-available digital cameras on the DxOMark Sensor scale and its three metrics (click on the different tabs to view the performance and ranking of cameras versus each metric). You can switch the x-axis for time, price range, or resolution, as well as filter the ranking by brand, resolution, sensor size, time and price (USD). You can also access the comprehensive set of RAW-based measurement data, curves, and plots for any given camera by clicking on its product sheet (left column).

If we compare the Canon DLSRs (10MP - 12MP) with each other, here are the results:

1 - Canon EOS 1D Mark III
2 - Canon EOS 40D
3 - Canon EOS 1Ds
4 - Canon EOS 400D
5 - Canon EOS 1000D

Very interesting.

This is just for the Canon DSLRs from 10MP upward. The actual rankings are mostly Nikon taking the lead.

If we compare the Canon DLSRs with each other, here are the results:

1 - Canon EOS 1D Mark III
2 - Canon EOS 40D
3 - Canon EOS 1Ds
4 - Canon EOS 400D
5 - Canon EOS 1000D

Very interesting.Actually it's
Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III
Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II
Canon EOS 1D Mark III
Canon EOS 5D
Canon EOS 1D Mark II N
Canon EOS 1D Mark II
Canon EOS 40D
Canon EOS 50D
Canon EOS 1Ds
Canon EOS 20D
Canon EOS 400D
Canon EOS 1000D
Canon EOS 450D
Canon EOS 350D
Canon EOS 30D
and so on.

The interesting thing is once you get to the crops the "DxOMark Sensor" range for the current models only really goes from 63.5 down to 60.6 and colour depth, dynamic range and low light ISO are all pretty close.

Still - overall my 400D only comes in at a measly 24th - time for an upgrade :D

mine is not even there :( A700It may not have even been tested. :)

bwana, my list was composed with DSLRs with 10MP upward. That's why there are no 350D's in that picture. Yours includes all.

Tis a nice site that...

And also nice to see the baby brother of my camera is 27th.. so hopefully should they ever test the A200, it'll be slightly higher up the list :)

I think you'll find you filtered only 10-12 mp. :)

Yeah why does Bwana jnr need schooling? The D3 is a much better buy than an education in SA (serious). :DThe D3 is an awesome camera but I'm a canon shooter and really dont feel like replacing all that glass (check out the price on the 16-35mm f/2.8 II L and you'll understand why ;)).

Come to the dark side, Han Bwana!

Sell the canon glass and get the D3 and "New" shiney glass :DNope. Now that they've brought out a new fullframe I've got no interest in switching even if I dont buy it straight away.

Besides, I think I'm doing ok with what I've got now.

But if it was in the top 10...She would if it will make me a better photographer.

Nikon I [One], 1948 The first Nikon camera.

The brand name "Canon" was first used in 1935 and the first camera to carry the name was the Hansa Canon 35mm rangefinder, announced in December of 1935.
