View Full Version : Help with my dilema!

Well, I've been trying to set my room up as the ultimate entertainment pad, I've got all my consoles (Xbox, PS2 and Dreamcast) and games here hooked up to a generic TV, got my PC (although it's **** now, I'm getting a new one soon to replace it) which is my editing suite as well (I'm a filmmaker/editor/videographer).

Got my room adorned with movie/game posters and action figures, my guitar and amp, some VHS movies (I have around 400, but have about 50 in my room) and everything has a nice polished look and a great atmosphere.

Here's the problem, I have around 400 movie VCDs, which would make a great addition to my room, only problem is, they're all in my house's family room, complete with a 5:1 sound setup and 80" LG Flatron. Now, that's obviously the preferred viewing place for said movies, but I really want my room to be the place in my house where my friends and I can just do what we want, play music, watch movies, play games etc.

So, here's the dilema, should I move all those VCDs to my room to complete the sense of a total entertainment pad, or leave them in the family room (on the other side of my house) with the best viewing equiptment. It sucks watching VCDs on a PC, it just doesn't have the right atmosphere, so it is possible to play VCDs on an Xbox somehow?

Should I maybe move all the VCDs here, friends can pick them out whatever, then move to the family room to watch?

I dunno, but not having all those VCDs just doesnt complete the atmosphere

This is indeed a pickle. How about buying one of those model train sets, punch a few holes in your walls for tunnels and have the train cart the VCD's between rooms. That's the ONLY solution I can see aside from winged monkeys.

:)

well, I guess to cut the whole story short.

3 choices:

Move all the VCDs to this room, watch them on a PC (bleh) or find a way to run them on Xbox

Move all the VCDs to this room for aesthetic purposes, but watch them in another one

Just leave all the VCDs in the room with the 5:1 sound and the big-ass TV

You must live in Never never land or something. You def have way too much money as well. You should have made an inventory of what you have, put it on the genral forum with subject "I am showing off". Save the forum for REAL problems.

Okay, personally I'd go for option 3 then because it sounds like the least amount of effort. Otherwise, go with the room closest to the fridge. I'm not payed the bug bucks for nothing. [:)]

Uhhh, since when is the Gaming forum for problems? The only reason I have the money is because I work my ass off, sometimes sitting at this PC for 9 hours straight editing a kids birthday party or a music video.

I agree with Pr13st, this the most futile problem I have ever seen.
And you are showing with saying things like 80" Flatron and telling the whole world (or part of it) you've got most of the consoles.

Vampiric Youth just think it out!!!

What difference would there be in watching a VCD on a 40cm TV and a 34cm monitor? None, there'd be no dilema then, if no-one knew the specs of other options available how would they be able to help?

Come now people. Dominic you've put your foot in your mouth on several occasions before, so cut the new guy a little slack. Yeah, he probably was showing off a little (or at least that's how it came across), but he hasn't really made any offensive statements. VY, ask one of the moderators to move this discussion into the Off-Topic forum. That's really where it belongs.

Break the wall between said rooms and make it one BIG pad for all of said needs... If rooms not next to eachother, break all walls inbetween... That will give you a nice loft effect like in the movies...

There is only one solution to this problem.

If you can manage it, clear off a large wall in your room, in other words, remove all posters, hanging objects, nails, cover up all holes with Polyfilla and paint it white. Next, buy pitch black roll-down blinds to cover the windows, and sealing rubber (like they use in car doors) to seal and insulate the door.

Now, buy a digital projector and mount it up against the celing on the opposite side of the room. If the distance is great enough and the wall is big enough, your room will have the largest screen in living memory, where you and your friends can enjoy the VCD movies to your heart's content.

Remember, VCD's dont have 5.1 sound anyway, so you don't need the 5.1 set-up. If the normal PC sound should displease you too greatly, simply invest in a good stereo amplifier and two very large speakers. A small Sony amp. with mid size to big Tannoy speakers is highly recommended.

Plus, with this solution, you have fantastic hi-fi sound in your room, and the projector can be removed from its mount, which creates all kinds of interesting possibilities. For instance, get some of your friends to help pay the bill, and rent one of these "grafiti walls" for a night, preferably on a new moon night, and the wall being one near a beach or some place nice, not a run down part of town. Then, find a power source, like a long lead from a neighbouring property, or a small diesel generator if you can find one. (A car with a running engine, LOTS of fuel, a cigarette lighter converter and a multi-plug can be substituted for a diesel generator, as long as it idles quietly enough not to disturb your viewing.)

Paint the wall white with quick-dry PVA paint during the day, set up a huge public address sound system (you can rent one from any electronics shop), wait until it's pitch dark (hence the new Moon), point your projector at the wall and do a serious out-door movie experience. [:D]

VY - just make copies of all your VCD's, see how long your burner can go without setting alight :)

I think rpm should create a section called "Stupid Topics" and make this one a sticky.

What's stupid about it? I'm trying to build a perfect entertainment room.

Willie, my one friend has a "Media Room" with said projector setup and a huge projector screen, very unimpressed, TV just looks much better. Although VCDs don't have 5:1, the sound still goes through all 5 speakers, which is nice :)

My PC speakers, no name "Hi-Fi speakers" for R50

Why not buy a few 200GB harddrives, copy all your VCDs to them and then use your hdd as the media source for TV, projector whatever.
By the way I wish I had your problems - and so does everyone else, hence the <s>jealousy</s> hostility [;)]

Already got one :)

Willie, I have another problem, I need a Sony VX2100 DVcam before I start shooting Ardeth in December (www.neverdead.co.nr)

I guess I'm going to just bring the VCDs here and run them through my PC, although my CD-Writer and DVD rom motors have burnt out, it takes ages to open a CD folder :(

If you dont need your Xbox for games, try Xbox media center

http://www.xboxmediacenter.de/

Needs a mod-chip (but it apparently can be loaded with a software hack as well)

Then you can play VCD off your Xbox

This is now in the "Off topic" section. Vampiric-Youth can speak about whatever he likes, as long as it's not offensive.

Dominic Rooney, feel free not to read or comment on this topic if it's not to your liking.

Vampiric-Youth, sounds like you are fortunate to have an awesome setup there. Whatever you decide, enjoy.
