here's a post I wrote on my blog after finally finding out how this works!:)

The voting for Europe’s most prestigious individual award, the Ballon d’Or will start this month and while many feel that Ronaldo will win it by a mile a closer look into how the winner is chosen makes for some interesting reading.

Ronaldo has the stats to back him up after scoring 42 goals in all competitions last season but after arrogantly claiming to be number1, 2 and 3 in the world the Portuguese star my be in for a surprise when the winner is announced in December.

The award is organised by France Football magazine and the jury consists of 96 correspondents for the magazine from all over the world, with majority of them (56 to be exact) based in Europe.
Each of the judges will receive a list of 50 names from Paris and everybody who’s been anybody in 2008 will be included on the list.

“Please make your selection of the world’s best five footballers for this calendar year in order of merit” the editor will write.

Four criteria apply:
1) Combination of individual and collective performance throughout the year.
2) Talent and sportsmanship
3) Career
4) Personality and impact

Each first choice earns five points, down to one point for the player chosen in 5th place. Totals are then tallied and the winner is announced at a grand ceremony in Paris that has been compared to being the Oscars for footballers.

So that’s the process in a nutshell and maybe it’s just me but I don’t think Ronaldo is the clear cut favourite that I once thought she was.

A big thank you to Paul Kelly for shedding some light on the process, Paul Kelly is an Irish journalist for FourFourTwo magazine and together with Irish sports broadcaster Jimmy Magee forms part of the Republic of Ireland jury.

Make no mistake, he's a talented guy but half the world can't stand him because he's such a prick about it.

another thing i was not aware of was that they only take 2008 performances into consideration, and Ronaldo has not exactly made the best of starts to the new campaign....He will probably win it though but I think it will be close.

It comes with the flair... I rather see a guy like Ronaldo on the field acting all crazy than seeing good ol people pleaser Beckham.

Beckham was never great and can never be classed with Ronaldo and Messi in my opinion.

Check how humble Torres is, he said in the media that Ronaldo is great and he deserves the award.

Ronaldo can learn a thing or two from players like Torres.

Yip. Ronaldo was the clear cut winner but after his comments it is going to be a lot closer.

That will be the excuse if he loses...

I think it boils down to when they put a piece of paper in front of most Journalist and ask them who is the best footballer in the world.
Messi's name will get written down.

The fact they judge on the season which messi spent most of the time injured, Ronaldo will win.

I agree. I still think Ronaldo will win.

If they were to judge from the current season, Messi will win hands down. Last season when Ronaldo had that amazing season, Messi was injured.

Had Messi not picked up two injuries last year and played the entire season, i think it would be very different.

Meanwhile on SKY Italia, Ferguson was asked whether Ronaldo deserves to win the Ballon d'Or, to which he replied (with a smile):

"If Ronaldo doesn't win the Ballon D'Or this season I will quit as manager."

Hope he doesnt keep his word

Yes but everyone's missing the bus here. Ronaldo is obviously going to win it whether a lot of people hate him for his arrogance and play acting. During the year he scored the most goals out of anyone in the world, he also had many assists, he achieved a premiership and champions league double and he was the sole reason for Man U's success. How can he not be named footballer of the year.

A bit of straw pulling going on.

BTW, did I mention that I absolutely hate 'Cry Baby' Ronaldo.

I find it funny that wven with Ronaldo's performace last season, people are still not sure if he will win the award.

But that's the beauty of the ballon d'or poolmania. it's not based purely on performances/abilities...

1) Combination of individual and collective performance throughout the year: Ronaldo will win that for sure
2) Talent and sportsmanship: Debatable
3) Career: Debatable
4) Personality and impact: Not a chance in hell

Look i'm not saying he wont win it. I'm just saying that after looking at how the winner is chosen it wont be a dead certainty that he'll win. Henche Fergie's threat to resign :D

I think it's pretty obvious that it was said tongue-in-cheek.
