View Full Version : R&B: The worst kind of music ever?

Seriously, I CANNOT abide R&B. Almost every other style of music has some artists that are decent, but R&B on the whole is ****ing awful. Why is it that EVERY goddamn song is about sex/relationships/"the clubŪ"?

Jip the radio station really are overplaying these songs..... i can handle listening to 1 song but 2 in a row..... It just gets irritating.

I also have a neigbour that has the habit of playing his/their R&B music very loudly on the afternoons when i get home and saturdays.....

Here is an idea, if you don't like it switch off, change the channel?

I LOVE R&B, soulful stuff, some of the new stuff sounds more like hip-hop type beats, but with someone singing instead of rapping.

I prefer rap, rock ..I am very selective though..more of Nas, Mosdef than 50, Lil Wayne..

And no its not soulful, R&B lost its soul after the 70's. Now its just the same ol fashion, steal someones riff, kill it with a crappy bass track, use some non-sensical grammatical structures, rap about how tough you have it. And when done, you get in your limo

It's always the same; my girlfriend/boyfriend is a ho'/dog and I'm gonna keep all the jewels/cars/money/throw them all away..... Kick him/her out... That sort of thing.

So musicians like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Alicia Keys have no talent.

Granted the music might have changed throughout the years but the themes and lyrics resonate with the fans because they can relate to it, even R. Kelly with his lyrics, people still buy his music, that does not make those people crap lovers.

When you are not used to a certain sound and cannot relate to it chances are you won't like it, same thing with food, art, movies, clothes, etc.

My daughter like the 'Jonas Brothers', I don't like their sound at all but that's what she and her friends like.

So a couple of things are at play w.r.t the type of music people like, like time, background, exposure and all sorts of things that make us different.

So relax, you don't have to like it, that's your choice, just move along.

R & B - it's not definitely blues and has no rhythm.

It's an insult to the original R & B concept to even mention the current ' artists ' in the same genre.

What percentage of these talentless clowns ever release more than 1 album.

There's so much of this rubbish in the stores that there's little room for artists with talent and longevity.

Wiki says -

In the 2000s, the initialism R&B is almost always used instead of the full rhythm and blues, and mainstream use of the term usually refers to contemporary R&B, which is a modern version of soul and funk-influenced pop music that originated as disco faded from popularity.

yeah...but that's what this thread is about is it not? The individuals personal opinion on R&B being the worst music ever...with the majority just agreeing?

R&B remains my favorite music. I like old school and I like some of the new school. I find that most of the latest R&B music seems to fade quickly.

But, music taste is a red herring. Just because a group of people agree on R&B not being their taste does not make R&B music the worst music ever.

Whilst music taste is a crucial tool in self-definition within a mass culture, it differentiates one while simultaneously making a case for one’s belonging to a group. It lets one conform and be different at the same time, which resolves one of the fundamental contradictions we confront.

Whatever rationale that drives the music taste of an individual or a group of people does not mean an automatic taste for everyone. Arguments about musical taste are inevitably about the participants seeking recognition for their individuality.

Great, It was a long time since I sat and watched a music award show till the end. Chris Brown took a few awards.

It is raining awards for Chris Brown at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles. The 19-year old singer bagged three titles including Pop/Rock, Soul/R&B along with the Artist of the Year.

"I would''ve gave it to Coldplay. I'm at a loss for words," E! Online quoted him as saying. His girlfreind , Rihanna also bagged the award for gong of Favourite Female Soul/R&B Artist and Favourite Pop/Rock Female, giving him another reason to celebrate.

Kayne West won the award in the rap/hip-hop category. Alicia Keyes, won for Pop/Rock Album and Soul/R&B album for As I Am, while Linkin Park won in the Alternative Rock category.

Thanks, I'll pass that info on to her....

I realise that it is more of a hip-hop problem than an R&B problem, but nowadays there seems to be a very fine line between the two.

Firstly, R&B used to have plenty of soul back in the 60's and 70's. Artists like Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Curtis Mayfield, George Benson are/were amazing, soulful and talented performers. Artists like Usher, R Kelly, Akon, Beyonce perform derivative, mass produced tripe with no originality. And their lyrical scope is pathetic in terms of content.

Secondly, R&B and Hip Hop are NOT interchangeable terms. Mos Def, Public Enemy, MF Doom, Immortal Technique, Roots Manuva etc are NOT the same as Akon, Rihanna et al.

Who'd have thought.

You could say the same thing about rock

Agreed, although at least most rock musicians can actually play an instrument.

Out of all the contemporary R&B "artists" I have the most respect for Alicia Keys coz at least she's an actual musician.

Most "radio music" is utter tripe, but IMO R&B is the worst of the lot, with the least actual musical merit, and the crappest lyrical scope. Seriously, these people need to at least vary their subject matter a little bit.

So I suppose all you Ho's and Bo's won't have a problem with me telling my 10 year old niece that it's okay to use the 'N' word and to be proud of being incarcerated.

Thanks, I'll pass that info on to her....

I realise that it is more of a hip-hop problem than an R&B problem, but nowadays there seems to be a very fine line between the two.

Nah - hip-hop is shyte, R&B is rubbish.

Secondly, R&B and Hip Hop are NOT interchangeable terms. Mos Def, Public Enemy, MF Doom, Immortal Technique, Roots Manuva etc are NOT the same as Akon, Rihanna et al.

1+ Now thats music..they have 5fm at the office and sometimes
beyonce comes on..there is this track where she just screams..I am like wow(as in sad)!

I thought I was the only one on here listening to MF DOOM...truly my favourite rapper of all time.

Anyway, there's a dial/off switch on your radio- if enough people did it they would stop playing the garbage.:)
