Congrats Mercurial! You'll have fun with it - it's an awesome piece of kit (despite what the nikon and sony fanboys say :p)
Now be a good kid and get one of these (http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/EF_Lenses/Fixed_Focal_Length/EF_50mm_f18II/index.asp).

AFAIK, that unfortunately won't work. You will have to do an all risks for that. Check with your friendly insurance salesman.

i just called outsurance and under the all risk "out and about" cover it will cost me R60 a month to insure a cam (value R8500) and lens (R2k). i asked them to send me the details of the cover so i can read over it.

Okay, I took a few pics but will upload one. That's if flickr.com would stop being an *******. I'm having endless problems trying to get an account, after I just got my yahoo account. Anyway, I'm glad I hung around these photography threads for so long. Once the camera's battery was fully charged, I could immediately start shooting, which was great, cos I knew what to do.

Thanks. Just a quick question though - my EXIF info doesn't wanna save to my JPEGs. I've tried using the TIFF (which has the EXIF), but the JPEGs doesn't have them. What am I doing wrong?

From which application? If you're using Photoshop's "Export for web" or something such, you lose EXIF and colour profile, so don't.

I save them from RAW to TIFF using Adobe Camera Raw. For some reason, once I open that TIFF, I cannot save to JPEG using Photoshop. I use Irfanview to save the TIFF to JPEG but I still lose the EXIF, even though the option I chose in Irfanview says to keep the EXIF. What other software can I use to save to JPEG/resize?

Working from memory but you can save to jpg if you change it to 8bit.

You should really have a bash at DDP. It's not exactly as slick as Aperture or Lightroom in terms of workflow, but it has the same benifit - you use your original RAW file as the base of your work, and export directly from there. It has the benifit of recognizing Canon's color/pictures styles.

There was recently a thread on dpreview about what the canon guys use, most of them use DPP.
Apparently it also has some lens information and can correct things <-- noob speak.
