View Full Version : Telkom & their own numbers

I once again had the misfortune of having to endure interaction with Telkom.
The router went belly-up (again) I was told "just go down to your nearest customer service centre" in itself, a contradiction in terms !
Based on past experience, I thought it best to call first, to make sure they had in stock, the item I required.
First mistake ! I call 1023 and ask for the customer service centre in Cape Town city centre. The reply "eh?"
After going in circles, I was told that Telkom directory services did not have the number.
I then challenged the impossible, by asking for a supervisor, plain stupid on my part I guess !
After many many calls I get through to the customer care centre, feeling like a drunk dog chasing it's tail.

I enquire as to why Telkom, being a Telecommunications company, withholds the telephone numbers of its own customer service centres.

Keep in mind, I still do not have the number !

I enquire as to the reason of this particular practise, bizzarre at best.
The answer "customers keep calling to find out how much their accounts are, and when thier installation is going to happen"
I ask, well, where are "all these customers" that plague Telkom finding the secret telephone numbers.
That was left unanswered.

I'm afraid they eventually broke me !
I thought best to cling on to any remaining sanity I had remaining at that point and just hang up.

2 suggestions :
Gather and publish telkom's jelously guarded numbers on a forum such as this.
If you have real gripes with telkom, buy 1 share, just 1.
This is your passage to all shareholder meetings, and of course, being a shareholder, in terms of JSE regulations, you are quite entitled to call up the CEO of the listed company, voice any concerns or raise any questions regards the operation of the JSE listed company.

I'm buying my share on Monday. In fact, why should we stop at one share, I think I'll buy a hundred. That way, not only am I entitled to phone up Sizwe and complain all I like, I am also entitled to a cut of those fantastic profits they are making. I encourage all forum members to buy as many shares as they can, that way we can get back some of the hard earned money they extort from us. The dividend from one share would just not be enough, we demand reimbursement, bastards.

Who knows, perhaps if we buy enough shares, we might even get to elect a board member of our own at the next AGM. RPM, you feel like working with Telkom? [:D]

Hi guys

I wonder how much buying power resides in the hands of MyADSL's member base. If I had to guess, we would take a significant chunk of Telkom's share base if we really made the effort. But we will never get the controlling stake no matter how much money we have. Thus it would be kinda futile, wouldn't it? I am going to get a share as well and at the next anual meeting recommend that Telkom be split up in smaller competing companies for the good of the country.

I know it will be frowned upon, but at least the idea will be out there... And then, who knows...

Cheers

Grant: I think most of us have had similar frustrating experiences while dealing with Telkom, so we do know how you feel.

Antowan: I like the idea of having one share if that entitles me to have some sort of say. (No matter how insignificant my say might be). But I'm not so sure about investing my hard earned money in a company (Telkom) which I have no faith in and quite frankly find rather disgusting.

Maybe RPM should consider registering myadsl as a company and those of us who are serious about the cause can become members and as a company we can purchase the shares. My investment knowledge is not top notch, but maybe there is a way we can make a difference as a group, as apposed to individuals.

There is a lot of power in unity.

This could be interesting:

Telkom holds its annual meeting.

Because of the thousands of minority shareholders wishing to attend, it has to be held in Ellispark.

The thousands of minority shareholders demand that the board implements a pricing strategy that brings the cost of telecoms in SA in line with the USA within a year an sets a motion that Telkom may not declare dividends for the next year and director compensation be frozen at 50% of current levels for 5 years....

Of course the majority shareholders will overrule, but then the consumers (as Telkom shareholders) are a direct opposition block.

This could be fun!

South Africa needs World Class Broadband at World Competitive Prices.

I think the point is that by holding even one share we would be entitled to turn up at the agm etc and make our feelings known

True, but we wouldn't carry enough weight ito decision making to convince the other shareholders to let their profits slip.
All we need is one share to have a voice. Jerrek already has shares (please confirm Jerrek?), but do you think he will want Telkom to lower their tariffs? [:o)]

onionpeel,

Hence my suggestion to buy as many shares as you can. If Telkom should ever change from its evil ways, you could always just sell them again, hopefully before the price crashes. In the mean time, a wad of shares would entitle you to a large dividend. If you have enough shares, you could use the annual dividend to take back all of the cash they extorted from you through the year in phone bills.

Of course the major apparant drawback to this is the illusion of support this will raise for Telkom....

This is one of the reasons why I didn't want to buy more than 1 share. I guess you just have to weigh up the pro's and con's and then make your decision.

Hi all,

I got a number from one of the Telkom Technicians. It is a Direct Number for the Manager of the ISDN department, Janet Huskisson, 021 414 4448. If there's no answer you get automatically diverted to the Service Center.

Good Luck (which you might need) ;)

Thanks @Anni3 for the number- I wanted to die of frustration on so many occasions.
