I picked up a new 3G operator in Cape Town yesterday, see pic (http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/showphoto.php?photo=8637&cat=500).

Is this evidence of Telkom 3G? The MCC/MNC is 65502.

Strange, I did a scan here in the V&A Waterfront:

VodaCom-SA
Cell C
MTN-SA
ZAF-02

Now I wonder too :D

And that's definitely zero two and not oh two?
It would shake things up if O2 came to South Africa.

I am pretty sure it is a zero, sorry. But I could be wrong. I don't have any more details than that.

My phone does not give any cool details like network type or codes or anything.

But it does pick up a fourth network

Yep that is Telkom confirmed. Good news 4 u Cape Town guys. You are now covered with Telkom 3G. Others living around Cape Town do check and post your results 4 coverage as well. Cape Town will be getting 70 Towers and Durban 50 only :(

ZAIN-SA

Thats all we need now with Cost Based Interconnection.

Then we will have competition going at its best.

Your phone has a list of MCC/MNCs and the corresponding names in it's firmware. If it can't find a name in the list it will display a generic name based on the codes; in this case the MCC is 655 for South Africa, and the MNC is 02, hence "SA 02" and "ZAF-02".

Dear Uli, i dont know for a fact whether Pietermaritzburg is included in this first phase rollout of 250 BTS. But most likely it would be included in the next phase of 500 BTS. Huawei has to hand over the first set of the 250 BTS by the end of FEB 2009 in complete working order with Telkom providing the Backhaul for every BTS. TELKOM is definitely commissioning a second phase of 500 BTS By 1 April 2009. My guess is u might definitely have Telkom 3G by July 2009.

:) I have this info ( subject to change ) on good record.

N-CAPE+E-CAPE+W-CAPE = 70 BTS

Durban + KZN = 50 BTS

It looks like someone has changed it now, remember Wikipedia can be edited by anyone.

I've picked up the 65502 network in Table View, Somerset West (Helderberg Village, where is still no Vodacom 3G) and Goodwood.
It seems Telkom are everywhere I go! :D

I can't pick it up in Somerset West, Briza area. Maybe they've angled it away from Somerset West, ie where ADSL can't get too.

My wife popped in at the Telkom shop at Canal Walk this evening to get a pre-paid SIM card, but they had never heard of Telkom's 3G service and suggested she try the Vodacom 3G shop.

If anyone in the Jozi area is willing to buy a SIM card for me, please contact me via PM. I will reimburse you.

How many towers would be needed to cover Durban anyway???

DXL
05-01-2009, 10:58 PM
If u take Durban central as a centre point and u go 25km south, 25km north and 25 west to blanket that area would require about 350 umts towers. 2100mhz WCDMA

NEOTEL however will cover the same area with 120 BTS. Neotel uses 850mhz CDMA.

TELKOM is rolling out towers in high traffic and high cable theft areas first.

Well, they want to make as much money as possible on contract before milking the pre-paid market.

Prepaid for them = month-to-month!!

Walk into a Telkom shop and give it a go, they do have stock at all shops in all the major centres.

I had to beg for mine as they insisted I was in a zero reception area. But then again, PE was not even meant to be on the air yet. They came to my house and were surprised at the 5/5 signal received!

I don't want month to month, I want prepaid ie buy a sim and topup with how much data I want to use. Reason is some months I'm not on the road so don't need mobile bandwidth, but then other times I'm on the road and need access so prepaid works best for me.
