18.07 It's all quiet in the world of big money transfers as the Premier League's top dogs take time out from scouring the globe to indulge in a little port and Turkey to welcome in the New Year. Either that or they're probably too hung over to answer the phone. Either way, it makes our job that little bit harder...

17.42 Southampton have signed Lee Molyneux on a free transfer from Everton. The left-sider has signed a two-and-a-half year contract.

17.31 Lee McEvilly's loan stay at Rochdale has been made into a permanent deal after the striker signed on a free transfer from Cambridge.

17.13 Remember, if you have any good rumours or have heard some news from your club you can get in touch via our PaperTalk.

16.48 Ryan Smith has completed the formalities of a permanent move from Millwall to Southampton after the 22-year-old winger impressed during a two-month loan spell.

16.45 Morecambe forward Wayne Curtis has joined non-league Barrow on loan as he bids to regain match fitness following a rib injury.

16.45 Elvis Hammond and Drissa Diallo have both signed new 18-month deals with Cheltenham.

16.43 Doncaster have announced that they could make a move for Oldham striker Lee Hughes, who was recently offered a new two-year deal at Boundary Park, in the January transfer window.

16.27 Various sources claim Liverpool are ready to ditch full-back Andrea Dossena following a disappointing season since his £7million summer arrival.

16.17 Derby caretaker manager Chris Hutchings has been given the green-light by the Pride Park hierarchy to bring new players to the club.

16.14 Watford boss Brendan Rodgers says the Hornets are still looking for new signings despite the arrival of Gavin Hoyte.

15.58 Reports suggest Arsenal and Manchester City are ready to hijack Manchester United's move for Serbian winger Zoran Tosic.

15.30 Hull City manager Phil Brown has announced he would be 'very interested' in signing Liverpool's out-of-favour winger Jermaine Pennant.

15.21 Iceland international Hermann Hreidarsson has reiterated his desire to quit Portsmouth in the January transfer window and the defender is confident the club will not stand in his way.

15.08 Bristol City have agreed a £750,000 deal with MSK Zilina for Peter Styvar. The striker has signed a two-and-a-half year contract at Ashton Gate.

14.55 Northampton manager Stuart Gray says he will look to bring Sheffield United right-back Kyle Walker to Sixfields again.

14.33 Former Chelsea defender Adrian Pettigrew is to have a week-long trial with Greek side AEK Athens.

14.28 Stuttgart have completed the signing of 1860 Munich starlet Timo Gebhart.

14.07 Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey admits there is as much chance of players leaving Molineux as there is new faces arriving in the Midlands.

13.45 Manchester City manager Mark Hughes hopes to have signed some of his transfer targets within the opening seven days of the transfer window. Chelsea's Wayne Bridge has been strongly linked with the Eastlands outfit.

13.20 Shrewsbury boss Paul Simpson has not wasted any time in the January transfer window by snapping up Joss Labadie on an emergency loan from West Brom.

13.04 Portsmouth accept they could lose Jermain Defoe following executive chairman Peter Storrie's announcement that the striker has shown an interest in leaving Fratton Park.

12.46 Remember, if you have any good rumours or have heard some news from your club you can get in touch via our PaperTalk.

12.20 Leicester striker Ricky Sappleton has joined Blue Square Premier outfit Oxford on a one-month loan.

12.13 Bosnia international Semir Stilic is desperate for his current club, Lech Poznan, to allow him to join Celtic in a £2.5million deal. However, the 21-year-old is also thought to be a target of Villarreal.

11.59 Richie Barker has completed a permanent move to Rotherham from Hartlepool after the 33-year-old striker caught the eye during a loan move.

11.55 Championship outfit Plymouth have signed Manchester United starlet David Gray on loan until the end of the season. The Scotland Under 21 international joins Red Devils colleague Craig Cathcart, who is already at Home Park.

11.31 Derby defenders Jason Beardsley and Mitch Hanson have returned to Pride Park following loan spells at Notts County.

11.29 Rochdale have turned Lee McEvilly's loan stay into a permanent deal and signed the striker on a free transfer from Cambridge.

11.23 Villa boss Martin O'Neill could be forced to make a move for a striker following news John Carew's injury may keep him out until March, according to the player's agent.

11.20 Harry Redknapp insists he will not be forced to pay over the odds for transfer targets in January. The Spurs boss has been linked with West Ham's Craig Bellamy, Portsmouth trio Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch and Glen Johnson plus Middlesbrough's Stewart Downing.

11.05 Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has revealed he has turned down a transfer request from £10million-rated defender Kolo Toure, who is thought to be a target of Manchester City.

10.36 It would not be a transfer window if there was not speculation about Cristiano Ronaldo and the final year of the Noughties has not disappointed. The Manchester United star has dismissed continued rumours that a deal is in place which will see him join Real Madrid at the end of the season.

Our comprehensive Transfer Centre news list provides all the latest stories on a daily basis. You can even search our archive by division and by club so you can check out who your team are being linked with.

Every morning PaperTalk features the latest stories from the tabloids. We also invite you to comment on the players the press are linking with your club plus urge you to let us know your Transfer Tips - have you got a contact who knows the comings and goings at United, City or Rovers?

08.50 The biggest story breaking early on the first morning of 2009 comes from Upton Park. Cash-strapped West Ham are prepared to listen to offers for all of their players during January, which could make life difficult for manager Gianfranco Zola.

It has nothing to do with the economic climate. Wenger hasn't spend even in the good times. He prefers to continuously build sides, never finishes any team because the good players get fed up and leave.

Besides January windows isn't really an indication if the economic crisis has affected anyone, the big clubs generally don't spend big in jan. Two reasons for this.

1.The best players aren't available in January.

2. The players you would want are by this time cup tied for the champions league.

yeah

he did buy nasri who was a bit pricey in the last window...

we dont care how much he spends, as long as he brings quality, look at sagna and eduardo... :)
both class players at bargain prices

sagna is easily the best right back in england

Think Glen Johnson and Chelsea's RB(can't get to his name now) are better right backs, so It's not that clear cut nivek.

Honestly though, don't you just wish that Wenger would go out and buy a proven world class player?A Augeuro, Benzema, Villa etc type player that would cost 20 million plus.

Bosingwa?
lol

No chance... Sagna is brilliant

You see him against Villa? He very rarely has a bad game

Yea, Benzema, Villa would great.. but we need a midfielder, hope he buys someone of the same calibre, but if he gets someone who we've never heard of but turns out to be another sagna type buy then even better :)

Here's another article about Tosic and Ljajic

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=606267&sec=transfers&cc=3888

"That is the end of the transfer business at Manchester United this year,'' Ferguson said. "There will definitely not be anything else this January.''

Can't say I've heard of either of them, but if they are anywhere near as good as Vidic....:)

Fern9do

They will probably never see the light of day at old Trafford. I'm still surprised that Fergie is giving that Brazilian right back so much game time.

Rafael has been outstanding in the few games he has been given. Has basically already replaced G Neville as first choice right back.

I expect the same from his twin brother and these two new lighties.

Genius.
02-01-2009, 05:30 PM
Rafael is getting lot of gametime. He has talent, altho if you watch him carefully you will pick up alot of errors in his game. He needs more experience. Reason Fergie gives him so much gametime is cos he doesnt have a choice.

Who else can play in that position. Neville? :D Id rather for for Rafael.

Fern9do
02-01-2009, 05:46 PM
He's got loads of potential, but I watched the game against Boro and you can see his flaws. Bad positional play for example.

What I meant is that of late united dont really give their youngsters chances in the first team.

I spose. The game against Boro was probably his worst performance to date. But considering he is so young, he has been pretty solid.

Jonny Evans also does well when Rio is not there...

Maybe in a CL semi. Think if one of the better players in Europe were to go up against young Rafael, do you think he will cope?

I dont think so.

Show me where i ever said that he looks like he has been playing first team for years.

He is young and inexperienced. His flaws are evident almost every week when he plays. Fact is, a striker like Eto, Benzema or Ruud will rip him apart.

Playing in the first team at that age is nothing amazing.

Bojan at 17 was regular in Barca's first team, played in the champs league/La liga and had goals in both(12 in all). Also got the record for most goals scored in a debut season.
