Thabang Mokopanele
Johannesburg - The three trade unions at Telkom - Solidarity, the South African Communication Union and the Communication Workers Union - on Friday stated that they would take company to court on Sunday in an effort to avert possible retrenchments.

The unions would ask for an urgent interdict to stop Telkom from offering voluntary packages to its workers on Monday.

The unions said they would argue that they had entered into a two-phase agreement with Telkom under the supervision of the Commission for Conciliatory, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).

The unions said that during the first phase, the parties had formed a task team to investigate the fairness of Telkom's rationale for retrenchments.

This phase was supposed to be completed by August 24. The second phase would include the discussion of the content of packages, selection criteria and possible alternatives for retrenchments.

The trade unions added that Telkom had decided to offer voluntary packages to workers on Monday and that they would try to stop this with an interdict.

According to Solidarity spokesperson Dirk Hermann, the parties in a consultation process must try to collectively find solutions to the problems.

"Telkom's decision indicates to us that the company wants to retrench the biggest number of workers in the shortest possible time," he said.

Telkom has in the last financial year posted a profit of R4.5bn.

The company plans to retrench 4 181 workers over the next three years.

"There is nothing more frightful than ignorance in action."
