<i>Kekana also pointed to Telkom's "e-rate" for schools that will halve the cost of internet access for schools from next year.

"This is a very positive contribution towards the growth of the internet in South Africa." </i>

Yes, I have to agree that the e-rate for schools might just increase local internet traffic somewhat. But few local commercial sites are interested in the traffic schoolkids would produce. To be honest: Most sites would consider schoolkid traffic as wastage! Kids just don't have the spending power and habits required to make e-commerce work!

Will somebody at Telkom please educate "Kekana" on the realities of the market forces of the internet?

South Africa needs World Class Broadband at World Competitive Prices.

"...Telkom's charges for local calls, compared with
those made using British Telecom (BT), are cheaper."

To which I say:

Liar, liar, pants on fire! [}:)]

If you compare costs using Telkom's online call charge chart:
http://www.telkom.co.za/portal/page?_pageid=1457,70317&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL&paramURL=/pls/portal/docs/page/pricing/content/custtomer_to_automatic_exh.jsp

versus BT's call charge calculator:
http://www.bt.com/btcom_redirectLink.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1489515889 .1092897897@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccchadcmflkihdjcflgcefkdffndfgn.0&action=redirectLink&targetLinkID=PIS_Call_Pricer_UK&vStore=1314&obsPage=%2fPricing%2fpis_summary.jsp%3fshowsub%3dP IS_Residential&obsOID=30174&obsType=LINK

at an exchange rate of R11.50

You get the following:

5 minute local call at 12:00 noon using BT =
R 1.725 (£ 0.15)
5 minute local call at 12:00 noon using Telkom =
R 2.456

5 minute local call at 00:00 midnight using BT =
R 0.6325 (£ 0.055)
5 minute local call at 00:00 midnight using Telkom =
R 1.322

I've tried several combinations and BT always comes in cheaper...

Next time you see a Telkom fat cat making claims like that, go to the web site of the company/country concerned and check their rates.

Hopefully increase in user base is PRECEDED by increase in available bandwidth and FOLLOWED by decrease in cost to the user base. Yeah right........
