Antowan, if you join the Gautrain profile on Facebook, they set out a list of the goals for 2009. They mention testing is to take place in May 2009.

Maybe this was 'preliminary testing', or some such thing?

Seen as the track is not complete yet, maybe the train came off the rails?

In todays The Star (http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=181&art_id=vn20090129062639645C933357)

Here it is - the first picture of the Gautrain in action.

On Tuesday, Gauteng residents had their first glimpse of the gold, white and blue train going through its paces.

It was tested at the Allandale depot and could be seen by motorists on the Ben Schoeman highway, which runs between Joburg and Pretoria.

The Gautrain on the tracks also created great excitement among the team behind the R25-billion project.

Gautrain spokesperson Barbara Jensen said she was at a meeting at the depot when she saw the train going up and down the test tracks. Every time it reached the end, it hooted.

"It was an incredible moment. After eight years of long and hard work, our dream has finally become a reality," she said.

"It's an African beauty."

The official launch of the train's testing takes place next week.

Jensen said the units tested had been brought in, fully assembled, from Derby in England.

Another two sets of units had already been shipped and were expected in Durban within about a month.

The coaches are running on a 4km track that will eventually be extended to 7km.

"In the meantime, as the South African-assembled coaches are completed at the factory in Nigel, we will continue testing," she said.

The Gautrain will be able to reach speeds of between of 160 and 180km/h, transporting commuters between Joburg and Pretoria in about 40 minutes.

Confusing.

Right now, the only station in Pta will be the one in Centurion, or are there others?

You can drive from Sandton to Centurion in 15 - 20 minutes by car if there are no traffic problems.

How then can they say the trip will be 40 minutes? If they mentioned the exact departure and arrival points, it would make much more sense ...

Maybe Cape Town should get a Stargate!

Its times like this when I'm sorry I left PTA. They were still blasting rock when I left Gauteng last year. Could have had your own mountan with that rock and! a train.

I would rather suggest a Mag-Lev train between JHB and CT... but with Escom in the picture... Imagine moving at 400km/h, and suddenly all the magnets lose power...

Remember it starts in central Joburg, at the new park station platform being built for it. Through to Rosebank, Sandton, Midrand, Centurion and ultimately Pta central. The only parts that have been scheduled to be complete by the World Cup are the Joburg to Airport/ Airport to Sandton / Joburg to Rosebank, Sandton, Midrand routes.

So 40 minutes from Joburg CBD to PTA CBD is pretty quick. If you can do that on a normal day in peak hour you should be testing for Ferrari!:D

Yes, I gathered that much from an earlier post, where it was also mentioned that the 40 min trip is between the two furthest points and it takes into account all the stops to be made.

Looking at it that way, it is pretty fast. I will mainly use the Sandton/Airport, Sandton/Midrand and Sandton/Centurion routes, so I am really, really looking forward!
