View Full Version : Is Gerrard a diver?
Genius.

Been wanting to post this for a while.
Gerrard is one of my favourite players in the EPL, but i have noticed this season that he falls down very easy in order to try and win a penalty or a free kick (especially when he is close to the box).
I know alot of players do it, but i have never thought of Gerrard as a consistant diver.
Remember the time when Liverpool played Atletico and he dived in the box in the 92nd minute and the ref blew for a penalty?
Today's match against Chelsea, he dived again when he was around the box.
Anybody notice his antics of late?

I was under the impression that it has been going on for a while now (12-18 months atleast) from what I have heard from mates. Don't really watch 'pool so can't comment myself... Also there was an article a couple of months ago on Goal.com about the hypocrisy of Gerrard speaking against divers/foreigners and the hush hush surrounding his diving. Can't remember if it was more or less than 6 motnhs ago. Probably closer to 4, but there you go.

No it just looks that way,The Atletico match the guy jumped on his back, what was he meant to do?Yesterdays match he was clearly passed the defender,he was sandwiched between to so how could that be a dive? I agree the red card was a bit harsh but other than that Liverpool deserved the win after having 70% possession and the more chances

This has nothing to do with Liverpool deserving to win. The topic is if Gerrard dives.
The Atletico Madrid match was an OBVIOUS dive. The player jumped for the ball and Gerrard went down like he was hit by a bus.

how the heck can you say the atleti match was an obvious dive ,IT WAS NOT A DIVE .the guy clearly jumped into him accidentally ,yes it was not a pen but it most clearly was not a dive cause the guy clearly bump him in the air ,people made a fuss about it cause liverpool got a pen from that decision which was the ref's fault not gerrards

Did you see how Gerrard went down or should we get a youtube clip and see???
Gerrard flew down and put his hands in the air like he was crying for help. Why did he put his hands in the air, hoping the ref will blow?
Only reason why people made a fuss about it, cos it WAS NOT A PENALTY and Gerrard knew what he was doing to get the penalty.

I am first to admit that he sometimes dives, not often mind. It has only been in the last 2 or 3 years. I think he's taken the view that so many others do it as well and get away with it so why can't I. I don't agree with it. It's the only part of his game I hate.

:rolleyes:do you know the definition of diving ,its when someone hasnt even touched you and you go down wanting a foul, gerrard was clearly bumped into and went down and appealed ,just becaue he appealed it was assumed that he dived

Was waiting for your response before i posted the same clip Henry just posted.
Take your goggles off, it is clear that there was no foul play when Gerrard went for the ball. He went down and appealed for the penalty. If he didnt go down like a fairy and appeal, there would be no penalty.
Get over it, the evidence is in the link.

Yes he is. Just like k a k a but they will never be labeled as such because of their other achievements. The media and fans at large will look past these issues.

dude read you reply again and you will realise what im talking about ,the thread is not about it being a penalty its about diving ,I agree that it shouldnt have been a pen but to say gerrard dived is incorrect cause clearly the guy jumped into him accidentally

Nope, i still disagree. I think you need to understand the word dive.
In that play, Gerrard dived to influence the game. If a player is touched and goes down very easily - THAT IS A DIVE. Gerrard wasnt tripped. He could have stayed on his feet.
If that isnt a dive, then all of Ronaldo's antics cannot also be considered a dive.
Genius.

Almost every player will take a dive to win their team a penalty or free kick in a dangerous position.

doesn't a dive usually constitute a card???? wouldn't that be his second yellow?

@Genius
show me a player who has never "dived"...I didn't mean Ronaldo type diving. Just the casual going down under the challenge "dive" which is mostly used to win free kicks in dangerous areas.
Genius.
02-02-2009, 05:37 PM
To dive anywhere is frowned upon. There are hundreds of players who dont dive. Sure if its a 50/50 challenge and the player goes down, that to me is ok. But to dive, with almost no contact from the defending player?
If a player gets hacked, sure go down - but to go down with no contact like Gerrard did in those youtube links is a disgrace!!

Disgrace?Hmm...bit harsh but that's your opinion, which your entitled to. He's arguably one of the greatest player's in LFC's history so I doubt he loses too much sleep over that.

Thats why i started the topic. He is one of my favourite players in the EPL. I love his way of playing, his pin point passing, his passion and the way he picks the team up and drives them foward.
However it leaves me with a bitter taste in my mouth to see a brilliant player like that resort to diving. :(

No way. Not every player is a cheat. Some of those dives in that vid I linked were disgraceful.
We all know Ronaldo has done his fair share of exactly the same thing. At least United fans admit it.

I don't agree that all of those supposed 'dives' actually are in those links pasted however , there are one or two sceptical looking ones. Which kinda sucks because Gerrard is a brilliant player.
In having said that, it's very easy to be an armchair critic. When you are playing hard and fierce i think a lot of things happen in the the heat of the moment that you perhaps don't intend or give much thought to. I'm sorry but no striker is a saint.

You mean, no player is a saint. Gerrard isnt a striker.
What are you talking about heat of the moment? If that was true, then all players would dive. That of course is not the case.

LOL. Some of those dives are simply unforgiveable, though. It has nothing tod o with happening in the heat of battle or whatever. It is cheating and should be eradicated. As simple as that.

No way man. Just look at how Carrick stayed on his feet for the penalty on Saturday. The majority of players do not dive. The ones who do, suck.

they were both going for the ball genius. you can't see if he got hit in the back with an elbow or what happened. the camera angle obscures what happens behind Gerrard's back.
he got hit by the guys head and elbow. you telling me he should have not fell down after a mid air collision like that?

Her should not have gone down as if someone had sniped him in the head, and then tried to con the ref into getting awarded a penalty.

Dont me mad man! I watched the game, as most of the people on this forum. There was no foul play. Even the commentators said that it was an absolute blunder from the ref.

Like I said, desperate times call for desperate measures. Liverpool have been dropping points and they were about to drop more, so when the opportunity arose, Gerard dived. It doesn't make it right but I'm just trying to add perspective.

I'm a Liverpool fan and Gerrard is one of my all-time favourite players, but he is a diver and a hypocrite.
