Does anyone know if we have lost Bradley Barret to overseas yet? if not then i would like to see the backline as follows

Rory kocket -> Ruan Pienaar -> Brad Barret -> Frans Stein -> Wayland Murray -> JP Pietersen -> (old faithfull) Stefan Terablanche.

For the Forwards,

as long as Keegan Danials, Ryan Kankowski and Jean Diesal (spelling) are in the mix, i will be very confident.

im fairly certain the sharks have enough pulling power to find another kit sponser, but lets remember that it was only the local branch that went under, the sponsorship might be signed with canterbury internationally, who knows?? it will be interesting though

Could it be Andries Strauss, he was a centre for the Sharks, and then just disapeared, and another guy could have been Charl Mcleod.

No, Strauss was with the Sharks for a while (and he was pretty awful truth be told) ... and Charl was the stand-in scrummie last year, wasn't him either.

Yeah impressive determination. Signs of a title winning side if I dare say so. Best Stormer's player was Pinaaar lol. Missed penalties, 1 missed tackle leading to a try and another missed tackle that almost resulted in a try. One of those days shame :o

I agree with the booing, that should not be a part of the game, but in saying that I have been to couple of rugby matches in Durban and there are also some idiots booing the kicker. I watched a international rugby match where the crowd was absolute dead silent while the kicker kicked, he missed all but one. The players get used to the noise as soon as the noise is removed then the kicker gets unsettled. Maybe something to try here at home.

Ruan Pienaar needs to pull his finger out of his ass now - he was very disappointing in the first game - his missed tackles (which directly caused a try against us), poor boot and piss poor tactical kicking could easily have lost us the game. In fact it was obvious that he resorted to calling crash ball with Steyn more often than not in the second half. Okay, it worked because the second half won us the game, however that had nothing to do with Ruan's calls or his boot.

I've always been a big Ruan Pienaar fan, however he has started off porly and needs to pull up his socks imo, and quickly...

The Sharks aren't convincing me so far. They are scrappy and undisciplined. At times they looked as bereft of a gameplan as the Stormers. They need to get their act together if we are going to win this year.

Against wooden spoon fodder like the Lions and Stormers we need to get good points differentials and bonus points.

Our scrumming is absolutely abysmal as well.

Problem is that we're leaking points at the moment. The immense defence that is usually our strong point is not firing on all cylinders, so if we can continue the great offensive game and pick up our defensive game, we will be unbeatable.

Great win nonetheless. The Blues are having a sorry start to their S14 season...

21-03-2009, 04:41 PM
Steyn was absolute ***, he was poor, poor, poor!

Anyone else watching this rubbish?

Sharks or more like Kockott vs the Reds and Steyn?

Steyn needs to cut his hair and go to France, PLEASE... He is getting worse and worse, knocks balls, takes drop goals with overlaps on the outside, doesnt pass... The list is endless...

All this while it seems like the Sharks only send half a team on to the field... Jacobs, Smit, etc. etc. You dont hear about them or see them doing ANYTHING... It seems like only Kockott jogged onto the field :/

PLEASE MAKE IT STOP.

Before the season, they said they'll keep Steyn at inside centre and then we'll see him vs De Villiers for the Springbok spot. Well, there is absolutely no comparison or competition between them. De Villiers has been brilliant every game and Steyn has on average been poor.

Kockott didn't help with some poor passes to Steyn, but Steyn was pathetic today (again).

Francois Steyn has no discipline. And therefore is game is nowhere.

Perth - The Sharks scored three tries to beat the Force 22-10 in their Super 14 match on Saturday as they ended their overseas tour on a high.

The Durban franchise will return home on Sunday with 13 points collected on tour after three wins and they couldn’t have asked for anything more.

The first half was characterised by extremely hard-fought rugby, with both sides running the ball when the opportunity arose, but were equally guilty of coughing up possession in good field position.

Force flyhalf Matt Giteau opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a penalty before that was nullified by a well-taken Frans Steyn drop-goal about 20 minutes later.

Those three points for either side were to be the only time the scorekeepers would be troubled though, as neither side managed to finish off attacking opportunities.

The Sharks got off to a much better start in the second half as winger JP Pietersen scored a great breakaway try in the 42nd minute.

Went on attack

Scrumhalf Rory Kockott was unsuccessful with the conversion from an acute angle but the five points gave the visitors an advantage.

The Force fought fire with fire though and had most of the possession for the next ten minutes but great defence from the visitors denied them time and time again. Then in the 58th minute, the Sharks forced another turnover and winger Odwa Ndungane found himself in space and darted down the right touchline for their second try.

Moments later, the Sharks went on attack again and after Steyn broke through several tackles to go close, Kockott picked up and went over for another try. When he converted his own touchdown, it was suddenly 22-3 to the visitors.

The hosts hit back a bit later as winger Scott Staniforth went over for their first try, but it was a mere consolation and not nearly enough.

Scorers:

Sharks: Tries: JP Pietersen, Odwa Ndungane, Rory Kockott Conversions: Rory Kockott (2) Penalties: Drop-goals: Frans Steyn.

Force: Tries: Scott Staniforth Conversions: Matt Giteau Penalties: Matt Giteau.

Yeah, I agree, get rid of Frans!

An OK performance - first two tries were very lucky and we owe that win to some much improved defence and some luck on our part. However after last week's game we seemed to come out in complete defensive mode in the first half. That's not how you win a game, let alone the S14. Come on boys - you have the talent to walk out with winning confidence on every occasion.

I must admit though, not sure what game Bryce Lawrence was watching but that really was some pathetic refereeing. I haven't sworn that much at a tv since Andre Watson cost us the Currie Cup in the mid 90s (can't remember the year :o ) His performance was abysmal and it is further reason why there needs to be a referee citing commission. It can only serve to improve the level of refereeing across the globe. Much the same way as players are now wary of playing dirty or recklessly, the refs should be held to the same level of accountability considering the influence they can have over the outcome of a game. Some of his calls were just bizarre, to put it nicely.

A few issues I picked up on though:

Why is Steyn not the preferred touch finder? As much respect as I have for Terblanche, Steyn has a much bigger boot and is still a consistent touch finder when the situation calls for it.

We play the best rugby when we're securing the ball at the breakdown, and we are not doing so very well at all this season. The turnovers against us were unacceptable at the level expected of The Sharks.

If we were able to secure the ball at the breakdown better, we'd be able to draw more defenders in to the ruck situation which opens up the space for the backline, who today proved themselves to be the fastest in S14 imo. Holy schmoley - Ndungane and Pietersen left the Force's defence in tatters with the first two tries.

Once and for all now, either play John at prop or hooker and make your minds up. We have a supreme hooker in the form of Bismarck and we know that the tight forward trio of John, Bimarck and Beast is a formidable one. We then have sufficient backup in Carstens and Du Plessis for when the boys get tired in the second half or for injuries. I don't see why they need to swap and change all the time.

Lastly, Stefan Terblanche must be most wanted fullback in SA at the moment. He is consistently efficient at every thing he does and some of his defensive tackles helped save us that game. As much as the scoreline reflects a fairly easy win (considering their try was a late second half one), we could very easily have found ourselves on the back foot again, chasing points and making errors in the process. Stefan was our saving grace on many an occasion when first time tackles weren't made and we need to tighten up that aspect of our game.

All in all though, they are issues that we all know The Sharks are capable of rectifying very easily and we haven't even begun to fire on all cylinders. When that moment comes, we will be unstoppable and I reckon the first game back home will see the start of a new invincible kind of form. Overall I reckon the trip down under can be considered a success and we have now built the platform to make 2009 a black and white season!!!

Alan
22-03-2009, 10:27 AM
Awful first half. I thought oh no going to lose in Aus yet again. Forwards were on vacation the backs had forgotten how to tackle.... The second was a complete turn around. Great performance. 3 possible reasons. 1) Plumtree got stuck in at the half time team talk 2) The Force number 8 was looking for **** the whole game and managed to seriously piss Steyn off and after that he was a different player 3) The Beast coming on and steamrolling the opposition. From the moment he came on it was as if their forwards were running into a concrete wall. Eventually the pressure told and they made mistakes leading to our counter attack tries

Also note the poor scrumhalf charging down a Steyn punt. Sounded like a gunshot going off . The guy carried on running for a few paces then faceplanted into the ground

Oh and Bryce Lawrence was crap as usual. Worst ref in the Super 14. Second time we've had him this season

Mephisto_Helix
22-03-2009, 12:26 PM
I agree with the 1st half being unforgettable ...... luckily that 2nd half was what it was, brilliant.

On the subject of these pompous, incompetent refs .... what more can I say that I haven't already said numerous times. They are obviously 'above' all laws and nothing will ever be done about them ... ever. Maybe it's time a campaign such as the Save the Springbok one is needed where we, the paying public, can bring about some action with regards these asses, sorry, Refs.

Steyn needs to calm down and play rugby and understand he can not do everything. He far too often does not pass when he should, kicks when he should hold it, passes it when all he should do kick and worst of all and this cost us the S14 and has almost cost us more, he runs when all he should do is kick for touch.

He needs to go back to basics, slow down and improve his consistency. Until he does this, his hot/cold games are going to cost us. He has done more wrong than he has done good this season. Finally on the Steyn bashing... he is not a flyhalf. I am not even too sure about him at centre. I think he would be a brilliant full back but at the moment he would be benched as Stafan has made that position his own in the Sharks outfit.

Steyn had better pull his finger out of whoever's ass it's been in to warrant him starting again. His immaturity is showing now and those ridiculous grubber kicks after multiple phases over the advantage line, in the Brumbies' 22 are really pissing me off. I've always been a Francois Steyn fan but he's proving now why support for his spot in the Sharks and the Boks is dwindling.

Well, we haven't lost a second half yet this season so here's hoping for at least 20 unanswered points in the final 40min and a bonus point, to boot.

Stefan Terblanche, once again, what a player!!! Best fullback in world rugby right now imo. Solid playmaker and one of the best defensive players in the game. He impresses me more and more every game...

Nice to see Frans Steyn start to hit a bit of form today. I've been bitching about Steyn quite a bit lately (deservedly so), but if he is definitely in Peter De Villiers plans, then I hope he comes good. Perhaps it was the home fans' booing in the first half that spurred him on.

Finally good to see that the Sharks supporters are willing to reveal their true feelings. Although I did feel for the guy when the crowd turned their back on him with that poor first half. It's one thing swearing at your TV, it's totally different when the home crowd boos a player for the world to see. I wouldn't say his second half was brilliant, but a big improvement.

I was at the game - it was ironic that most of the crowd booed him when he missed the first drop goal, but was the hero in the second half when he kicked one over.

The sharks played poorly, but luckily so did the canes. The sharks capitalized on some errors and other than a couple of lucky tries they never looked like stringing together a back line move that could penetrate the defense.

Top of the log is well deserved but they will have to play better if they want to win.

There was a period (in the first half, IIRC) where the 'canes outmuscled the Sharks in the scrums and rucks. The period when Steyn decided to run the ball from his 5 metre line. The 'canes pack was 80 kgs heavier. Need Jean Deysel back.

Awful, atrocious and abominable performance by The (supposed) Sharks today. Pathetic ref, but we'd have still lost it with even a decent ref on the pitch. Cheetahs played really well and The (supposed) Sharks just folded under the pressure. We practically handed them their tries on a silver (or was it orange?) platter. Steyn was terrible again (I'm sick and tired of him now) and might as well have scored the Cheetahs' second try for them. Jordaan hopefully just lost his place in the team for some time - throwing his opposite number over the try line - wtf!? And not a single decent attacking opportunity.

I think we're the only team to not have had the bye already no? If that's the case, that's actually messed up if you think about it ..... that everyone else gets a rest except us.

Yes, it's no coincidence, that the Sharks & Waratahs the last two teams to have a bye, have looked tired, slow and lacking in ideas the past few weeks.

As for our play, it's disjointed and individualistic, hopefully the return of Ruan Pienaar will bring more structure and teamwork back to our play. And our first phase possession has had a few issues of late, scrums being inconsistent, some very good and bad ones; lineouts were a disaster last week, slight improvement this week, but still way down compared to our first 6 games.

And the refs, the less said the better, the Aus refs have always been bad, but their performances this S14 have been absolutely terrible. NZ refs were good, but in the past 2 years they've dropped to Aus standard. Our refs, specifically our top 4(Kaplan, Lawrence, Joubert, Jonker) are usually quite good, and consistent, but even they are battling to be consistent with their officiating of the rucks.

If one team can play the ball on the ground at the rucks and the other can't(one team can turn the ball over at the ruck despite having no players on their feet), the question then becomes what's the point to playing, since there are more rucks than anything else in a game of rugby.

Now I'm not saying the refs are cheating, though some are so bad it could sure look like it. A good ref is usually evident by his ability to read the game, good positional play and make good consistent decisions under pressure. But if you don't have that you will continually get to the rucks too late and penalise the first thing you see, which is usually the 3rd infringement. That slowness to the rucks usually gives the teams on average 2 seconds to play the ball on the ground.

NZ seems to have got the idea an ex-player makes a good ref, want proof that's not necessarily true, look no further than Bryce Lawrence.

As for the supposed "Elite panel" that's officiating in S14 this year, that's a contradiction in terms while it's loaded with substandard officials.

The only solution is to have an independent impartial body under the IRB for refs where they are properly and regularly evaluated and tested to see whether they're up to standard or not. But this will never happen while England and Australia continue to have a too dominant say in the IRB.

Sorry I ignored my comment about the less said the better :p lol

Yes, it's almost as Craig Joubert is worried about seeming to be biased, so he points out Shark's indiscretions, and ignored Highlander ones. As was evidenced in the studio discussion after all the games, where Darren Scott showed a few Highlander high tackles that went unpunished.

To be honest, I'm not his biggest fan anymore. Somewhere along the line, he has lost the spark he had last season and the season before that.:(

Poor decision making, taking the ball in too many times and the line breaks have dried up, yes I know he gets analyzed by the opposition, but surely that's not the reason for his performance.

I remember Habana also having a very lean spell after the opposition closed him down.
I like Steyn cause he seems capable of almost anything, and drop goals from the halfway line are awesome!

Each coach seems to have their own opinion of where he should or should not play, must make it difficult for him to settle in a position/role.

Still, great things to come from such a young talent yet.

Trying to work out why we are playing like we are is quite the riddle.

Any ideas?

Based purely on the players body language it just doesnt seem like they are enjoying being on the field. They have low work rates and are sluggish.

Perhaps the early injuries in the backline, coupled with low rotation of players has created some player fatigue (possible mental). I get the sense with muir's last season he swopped and changed to much, now we are sitting with the opposite.

Ludike on the other hand rested non injured players quite heavily. The bulls seem to have more fight in them.

But beyond that, the poor finishing is hard to explain. I would like to see the sharks play more structured running rugby. Their helter skelter stuff is getting a bit tiresome. Part of me thinks our players are battling to get themselves in the right psotions because of the "unstructured nature" of the sharks structure. When they do, it works well, but when they start dropping 50/50 passes and confidence drops, landing the 50/50 stuff just gets harder and the pressure builds.

I'm hoping the changes to ther rules next year will make the game a little smoother.

A Disciplinary Hearing was held on Monday into the citing of Waratahs replacement scrumhalf Brett Sheehan for a late and dangerous tackle on Sharks center Bradley Barritt following Saturday’s Super 14 match in Durban.

Sheehan was represented by lawyer Stephan Weyers and his case was heard by SANZAR Judicial Officer Attorney Dekker Govender.

The Waratahs replacement scrumhalf admitted that his shoulder made contact with the Sharks player. The Judicial Officer ruled that the incident between the two players was unavoidable as both players were running at each other, at pace. Govender also added that the incident was a collision rather than a tackle.

The case against Sheehan was not upheld by the Judicial Officer. As a result the player will be available for selection the Waratahs’ next Super 14 match against the Auto & General Lions in Johannesburg on Friday night.

the sharks aren't that clean either, just not as much in the spotlight, the rest of the country don't hate the sharks as much as they hate the bulls, so all their little shina****ns aren't scrutinized as much as the bulls'

CHURCHILL

The easiest way for the Sharks is if:

Chiefs beat Brumbies
Blues Beat Saders
Sharks beat Bulls

or

The Sharks can sneak into the Vodacom Super 14 semi-finals even if the Crusaders do beat the Blues in Auckland in their final league match on Friday.
While many are assuming that a Crusaders win will be enough to ease the Sharks out of contention, that is not quite correct. When the Sharks watch the Auckland game on television on Friday morning, they will be hoping for a Blues win as first prize – but a Crusaders win without a four try bonus point would be enough to at least keep them in contention.

Provided the Chiefs do what they are expected to do by beating the Brumbies in Hamilton on Saturday, it would mean that the Sharks will still have hopes of making the semifinals when they start their match against the Bulls at ABSA Stadium late on Saturday afternoon.

The catch, of course, is that they will have to score four tries against the 2007 winners, which would enable them to go level with the Crusaders (and the Brumbies if they beat the Chiefs) on log points. Both teams are one log point ahead of the Sharks at present, but both also have inferior points differences in comparison to the Durban team.

If the Sharks are set the task of beating the Bulls by a big score, it will be a massive ask given the defensive capabilities of the Bulls.

I still don't think it was 100% the teams fault for this ..... like I've said before, our backline coach is IMO, useless and needs to go and we need to procure depth. Look what happened when we had injuries to key players. A lot of Sharks fans are mad that 1) Straulie isn't procuring depth and 2) that the Sharks Academy players aren't getting used more. Add to that the very costly errors on the part of refs, touch judges and TMO's and a very late bye week and we have the current situation.

Both yellow cards were hogwash. If you want to be picky, just take a look at how Stefan T tackeled the one bull in the air. I am neither a sharks nor bulls supporter and the sharks did not deserve to be in the position they were in, let alone win the game. If anything, the bulls got the wrong end of the ref more then the sharks and not the other way around. The sharks did not even get a warning yet they must have committed 5 offences at the breakdown in a row, in the red zone, at one point in the second half.

If you want to blame someone, blame the sharks for all of the kickable penalties that they decided not to take. The count was on 4 when it was only 20 minutes into the game.

I support the Lions, not the bulls or sharks. ST jumped up as he was tackled and ended up going into the arm. The arm was swinging a bit but if it he wasn't using it then you would have complained about a shoulder charge. It was definitely not deliberate. What about Pieterson using an elbow to the throat to push off the bulls twin. That was a lot worse and he got nothing. I suppose it's accidental when its done by a shark.

That was protecting himself. His hands was holding the ball. What is different from what he did and a straight arm handoff in the face? Don't be a joke. What JP did borders on assault with intent. He deliberately used his straight arm in a circle swinging movement to dislodge Stefan's head! He never attempted to use both arms to tackle. The same with Bakkies Botha earlier but he got away with it. Seems to me the only way the Bulls know how to win is with dirty tactics.

Law 10.4 (a). "A player must not strike an opponent with the fist or arm, including the elbow, shoulder, head or knee(s)."

Not the same as a hand off which is legal.

He did not "STRIKE" the attacker. That is what Bakkies AND JP did. He fended himself with his arm while holding the ball with both hands as far as I can remember it did hit the attacker in the throat but that was far from deliberate and the REF agreed. Remember the ref was clearly wearing a blue jersey. Maybe you watched a different broadcast.

Have a look at the replay. He was holding the ball in his right hand and hit the defender with his left elbow. Thats why he dropped the ball because he was only holding it with one hand.

BTW: Bakkies did not use any of "fist or arm, including the elbow, shoulder, head or knee(s)". He pushed with an open hand. I am not saying it was legal but a flat hand is definitely not going to do as much damage as an elbow.

Bakkies Botha shoved Ryan Kankowski in the face at a ruck

Thats what it was, a shove. Also the next two pieces are interesting.

Bulls showed massive commitment and poise to survive the questionable sin-binning of two players – JP Nel in the 23rd minute and Deon Stegmann in the 34th.

If there was a measure of doubt about Nel’s misdemeanour Stegmann’s dismissal was downright unfair because he was on his feet trying to wrest free the ball from a man on the ground while being held and tugged by Bismarck du Plessis in a palpably off-sides position.

But obviously everyone that disagrees with you is one eyed. Even if they don't care which side wins.

Yes its actually very strange how Bismarck was not cited, for actually sitting on Stegmans back (stegman's yellow card incident), and the wrong side of the ruck. But oh well, even when the sharks played with 16 players and the bulls with 14, the bulls still kicked butt.

We need to get the teams scoring tries again and stop them from kicking all the time... It makes it much more interesting to watch...

Think if you win you get 4 points, if you score 4 tries and win you get 6... If you loose with less than 7 and score 4 tries you get 3 points... Sounds much more fair to me... How can loosing with just 7 points and scoring 4 tries be considored the same, aka 1 point?

If only we'd concentrated on actually winning the game and then going after the bonus point. Those three penalties early in the 1st half, practically in front of the poles (which resulted in no points for the Sharks) could have done us nicely...;)

Thats where I think the messed up. If the sharks were 28 - 10 up at half time (assuming they took the 3 penalties), it would have been game over.

Fair enough, but the Sharks have only themselves to blame for the situation they found themselves in this weekend. I think they peaked way too early this season. Nevertheless, I still think they rock and I look forward to watching them win the Currie Cup.

Well said. This is a true fan, he sees his teams problems / faults and accepts them and still stays loyal. Well done.

You call a yellow card for a deliberate dangerous stiff arm tackle hogwash? I can see who you really support. Watching with some misty glasses maybe?

ROFL :D

Have you read your own comments? Between you and MH I can not decide who is the bigger crybaby. FFS grow up, the ref was fair and did not as you claim lean towards the bulls. "Loser whine about giving it their best, winner go home and Fsck the prom queen".

Yes its actually very strange how Bismarck was not cited, for actually sitting on Stegmans back (stegman's yellow card incident), and the wrong side of the ruck. But oh well, even when the sharks played with 16 players and the bulls with 14, the bulls still kicked butt.

Best moment, when Pierre Spies ran over (yes over) kanko

I lol'd :D

If the sharks had played like that against any of their previous 3 opponents they would have been in the semis. They did not thus they are not there. Yesterday the bulls played for 20 mins with 14 men, the sharks could not keep their cool while the bulls could and did.

The better team on the day won, deal with it.
