Just out of interest, I am wondering where most of you play - district wize...

American?

I play intern because of less lag. I am not really worried about other people because I prefer using the heroes :p:D

American =) It has more people and the difference in pings between districts I find is minimal.

Euro mostly. Since ping-wise it is the best for us in SA.
Most SA providers have better links and less latency to EU than to US.

International here :p

Hardly any players in those districts makes for peaceful trips to towns/outposts. Otherwise I pop over to American to LFP

I normally pick the district with the lowest ping - International usually, sometimes Europe

I always use American. There is no much difference on latency between districts, but benefits are that I can play with other people on HM and even catch an good offer to trade something.

I dreamt last night that I had a stable 20ms in GW.

What a wack dream >_<

Where can i see a list of servers with the ping results?

I am using MTN HSDPA and my ping is always high

shadowfox

That's normal for HSDPA - their connections aren't great - latency wise.

I usually average between 500 - 900 with a decent connection.

Will i get better results with ADSL , 384?

I am gonna test it tonight...

Probably, but I stand ready to be corrected. The line speed may be a lot lower vs HSDPA, but its a hell of a lot more stable, or as stable as anything down here.

I play with my HSDPA connection as well - but I get more lag than my one friend on her Telkom 384. Even when a speedtest says I'm connected at 2Mbps +

You need an unshaped account to get the best result. Your line does make a difference, but if you aren't downloading, a 512 Line with an unshaped account will be perfect.

shadowfox

Yes ... its that shaping thing :p

Bastards gave me a square peg and I'm working with a round hole :D

Basically it isn't really about the size of your connection, like 384 or HSDPA which is 1.8MB+, it is more to do with the shaping of the bandwidth.
Unshaped connection is much better. I have an unshaped 384 ADSL which gives me 200-400 ping.
My shaped 384 ADSL connection gives me at least 100-200 more ping, making it 300-500ms ping.
I have been able to reach 200ms ping to EU servers on my 1MB unshaped connection.
HSDPA generally gives me between 200-500ms ping.

In general, EU is our better connection because most of the SA network providers have big network connections to Europe.
The additional ping round-trips to America, makes the ping to there a bit higher.
Plus, our timezone is very similar with EU.

On iBurst, I'm getting 235-600. Didn't noticed difference between EU and US, because it always varies and finding hard to determine any difference. I'm getting to EU only to play Polymock and honestly, both pings are same (~50ms difference I think).

Tested right now: International and EU
EU:
Idle = ~300ms.
Walking/Fighting with small groups = ~400ms.
Heavy Fighting = ~500ms.

International:
Add 100ms to above.

Select servers at left top corner of screen, where it states continent and country.

You can find new people everywhere. Most players can be found on American District, but during day Europe English have more players due to time zones.

I prefer American in evenings and Europe English during day.

Have a nice gaming. ;)

You are not server-bound. You can travel to any district, from AM, EU and International.
As the other said, EU for SA people to play with people in your own timezone, AM gets busier in the evenings.

Thanks for the informative replies.

I am however a bit lost when it comes to the different releases and so on.
As I understand you basically need to play Pro/Factions/Nightfall as seperate games.

My question is why then is certain classes only available for specific releases ? would have been fun starting the game with your pref. class and playing all the way to the end . All content is however available for all classes right ?

shadowfox

Its pretty much a case of the professions being released with those campaigns. Prophecies introduced all the basic classes (Necro, Ele, Monk, Ran, War, Mes) - the Sins and Rits were introduced with Factions while the Dervs and Par were introduced with NF.

I agree it would have been nice to start Proph with say, a Sin or a Derv - but nothing stops you from going back to Ascalon with them - although you're not going to be facing much of a challenge.

The only piece of content that you won't be able to access with NF and Factions chars is pre-searing Ascalon - that area is exclusive to Proph chars.

I am so lost atm .....

I will play and let the game unfold for me . I guess like WoW the more I play the more I will learn and understand.

BTW one question : Does GW also take up so much time in order to lvl all the way up and experience the game ? Like WoW for example , if i'd be a new player and knew from the word go what i would be embarking on I would never start the game.

Nope, Max lvl is level 20, then its all about the skills you use and the skills you take with you on every mission (max of 8 skills on your skill bar).

What campaign are you playing / do you own?

I bought the box set yesterday.

Installed and updated . Created 1/2 char and just checked out the interface and gameplay before I logged. Will give it a bash starting tonight onwoards inot the weekend.

I just dont hope that it'll take months to get to 20 and when you reach 20 the game dies ! I just might go insane then :)

Nope, took me all of 2-3 days to get to lvl 20 and from there on its just more fun.

I don't play that often any more 5-6 hours a week and I still enjoy every second of it.

If you are looking to get the full story / lore experience then start with prophecies, looking to learn fast and get to lvl 20 fast then start in Nightfall (you also get heroes in Nightfall which are a lot better than Henchies).

Anyway post your in game name here when you have created a char and I will be happy to send you an invite to our guild, then others will be able to help you when you need it :)

does it matter which district you play in? cause I thought it was one big server?

It is and you can move freely between them in any case. I use Intern. Distr because of better ping :)
