Is it possible to use Skype on a 56k dial up?

Good Question.
If anyone wishes to email me, bttb@myadsl.co.za we can test it. In the mean time install Skype from http://www.skype.com and test it using the <b>echo123</b> test. By calling echo 123, skype will record your message and play it back to you. This will help you in your setup. Look at the Hellkom website http://www.hellkom.co.za , as Gregg Stirton of Hellkom has lots of information for a beginner user. I found this link off Hellkom, http://computer.howstuffworks.com/ip-telephony.htm/printable
I think a bit of testing wouldn't hurt anyone. Seeing it's legal in a few months time anyway.

Where is the best place for headsets here? I have not seen any for sale.
Amazon.co.uk sell Plantronics ready made for Skype at R300 , maybe worth importing.

I would think that's it reccomended that who have broadband, especially if you phoning to someone over-seas :P

Make sure the Headset you use for Skype is not bulky. The one particular Aopen model from Rectron is very bulky and will hurt your ears.
Basically you want a headset that is comfortable and that you can hear things that are going on around you. I bought a Labtec model from Rectron. Here is a link to a similar model to what I have. http://www.labtec.com/index.cfm/gear/listing/EUR/EN,crid=8,crid2=9
It is old stock and USB, not quite what I had in mind, but is very comfortable on your ears. And I can still hear whats going on around me. Some of the gaming headsets will focus on perhaps blasting your eardrums with pads that will envelope your eardrum, thus blocking out all other noises, which IMO is not suitable for a telephone type service like Skype. And many people in office environments will look silly wearing a ghetto blaster on their person.
