View Full Version : Today's artists have lost the ability to write lyrics...

Seriously... look at the grammy nominees and some of their songs:

Adele with chasing pavements? WTF?? Nominated as song of the year, record of the year and even female vocalist of the year...

Another song of the year finalist: Jason Mraz's I'm Yours - some of the lyrics follows:
Well you done done me and you bet I felt it
I tried to be chill but you're so hot that I melted
I fell right through the cracks
And now I'm trying to get back
Before the cool done run out
I'll be giving it my bestest
Nothing's going to stop me but divine intervention
I reckon it's again my turn to win some or learn some
....
I've been spending way too much time checking my tongue in the mirror
And bending over backwards just to try to see it clearer

Next is John Mayer who didn't have any idea what to say and instead just got stuck on "Say what you need to say" - 36 times in fact. That's 65% of the song is a f'n chorus  I hate that song almost as much as I hate that John got to stick his mayer in Jennifer Aniston.

Then there's Beyonce's If I were a boy:
If I were a boy
Even just for a day
I’d roll outta bed in the morning
And throw on what I wanted then go
Drink beer with the guys
Ok, maybe that's what some of these playboy millionaires get to do, so I'll give her the benefit of the doubt on that one.... but this:
If I were a boy
I could turn off my phone
Tell everyone it’s broken
So they’d think that I was sleepin’ aloneSay what? How does that even make sense?

But none of those are even remotely as bad as this:

The Killers with Human

Are we human or are we dancer? apart from the rest of the song being utter lyrical trash.... are those the only choices? Is there a planet called dance where the inhabitants are called Dancer? Motherf*r. It really seems as if good lyrics have gone out of the window...

This is very true. But at least 2008 brought lyrics like "Fsck me like you hate me" into the mainstream. But this lyrical tripe is here to stay unfortunately - it's just a symptom of pop culture. Waxing lyrical about shorties popping your hood has become commonplace. FFS - Bob The Builder hit UK #1 not so long ago...

Mainstream music today stinks. It's sole purpose is too milk yuppies of their cash. It's more visual(MTV) and a social product( listen to x to fit in and be 'cool') etc

Indeed. Catchy tunes that stay in the memory just long enough for someone to download them off itunes or as ringtones, listen to them a few times and then the next 'hit' comes out. Sad times.

I know! That is just so freaking infuriating. I know there's always been bad lyrics and some songs should never really have "made it", but today's trash is just the same over and over. I believe U2 are releasing their new album this year, I just hope they've not been tainted by the times. It won't be the first time...

You reckon if Lady Gaga had changed the lyrics to "poke her face" it would have impacted sales at all? I reckon the music video would have got more attention at least...

Jizz in my pants Lyrics

Lock eyes from across the room
down my drink while the rhythms boom
take your hand and skip the names
no need here for the silly games
make our way through the smoke and crowd
the club is the sky and I’m on your cloud
move in close as the lasers fly
our bodies touch and the angels cry
leave this place go back to yours
our lips first touch outside your doors
a whole night what we’ve got in store
whisper in my ear that you want some more
and I

JIZZ IN MY PANTS
This really never happens you can take my word
I won’t apologize, that’s just absurd
Mainly your fault from the way that you dance
and now I
JIZZ IN MY PANTS
don’t tell your friends or I’ll say your a slut
plus its your fault, you were rubbing my butt
I’m very sensitive, some would say that’s a plus

Now I’ll go home and change

I need a few things from the grocery
do things alone now mostly
left me heart broken not lookin’ for love
surprised in my eyes when I looked above
the check out counter and I saw a face
My heart stood still so did time and space
Never felt that I could feel real again
But the look in her eyes said I need a friend
She turned to me that’s when she said it
Looked me dead in the face, asked “Cash or Credit?”
And I

JIZZED IN MY PANTS
It’s perfectly normal, nothing wrong with me
But we’re going to need a clean up on aisle 3
And now I’m posed in an awkward stance because I
JIZZED IN MY PANTS
To be fair you were flirting a lot
plus the way you bag cans got me bothered and hot
please stop acting like you’re not impressed
One more thing, I’m gonna play by check

Last week - I saw a film
As I recall it was a horror film
Walked outside into the rain
Checked my phone and saw you rang and I
JIZZED IN MY PANTS

Speeding down the street when the red lights flash
need to get away need to make a dash
A song comes on that reminds me of you and I
JIZZ IN MY PANTS

The next day my alarm goes off and I
JIZZ IN MY PANTS

Open my window and a breeze rolls in and I
JIZZ IN MY PANTS

When Bruce Willis was dead at the end of sixth sense I
JIZZED IN MY PANTS

I just ate a grape and I
JIZZED…IN…MY PANTS
JIZZED…IN…MY PANTS

Ok seriously you guys can we…ok…

I JIZZ RIGHT IN MY PANTS EVERY TIME YOU’RE NEXT TO ME
AND WHEN WE’RE HOLDING HANDS ITS LIKE HAVING SEX TO ME
YOU SAY IM PREMATURE I JUST CALL IT ECSTASY
I WEAR A RUBBER AT ALL TIMES ITS A NECESSITY

Cuz I
JIZZ…IN…MY PANTS
(I jizz in my pants, I jizz in my pants, yes I jizz in my pants, yes I jizz in my pants)
yes I JIZZ…IN…MY PANTS

Trash it, change it, melt - upgrade it,

Snap it, work it, quick - erase it,
Write it, cut it, paste it, save it,
Load it, check it, quick - rewrite it,
Plug it, play it, burn it, rip it,

One suggestion...if all you know is pop and you don't know where to get a hold of decent music then explore the progressive scene. You still have artists performing progressive rock and progressive metal influenced by the likes of Rush and Pink Floyd and Deep Purple and so on....people who actually know how to play and write good lyrics as well. IMO people who work for their money and have proper talent.

However if you would prefer to listen to the same k*k that your 6 year old daughter also enjoys then stick with the good old worthless piece of sh** mainstream vibe. Enjoy making Simon Cowell jizz in his pants for every penny you waste for a catchy tune that will mean sweet fk all in a years time :p

Who listens to lyrics anyway? Its the music you should be interested in, who cares about what the artist has to say especially on their second, third etc albums. They just say what they need to say to try and sensationalize their music.

Although there are people out their who can actually convey imaginative stories through their lyrics, this I find is perfect for people with imagination! Like me! :)

thats because most of todays bands cannot write two musical notes much less a song. The are still some great musos out there you will jus thave to go and look for them, don't expect them to jump out of the radio. And if all else fails, stay with the classics

Of course they are! Music today is paint, well, songwriting by numbers. It is designed to be as catchy as possible. Complex music is for the true musicians, and they have no place in pop. The labels and producers make the music to maximise sales, whichever pleb (britney, jt, even madonna) is chosen to unleash the song is just along for the ride. The "artists" don't care what they sing, it is making them oodles of money. And the producers/label owners are smiling all the way to the bank.

But he basically does the beats for alot of artists including himself he has little interest in lyrics. He makes a cool beat and goes "nah nah nah nah" because he can... And it sells like hot cakes.

They have all taken the poetry and mind imagery and personalized interpretation out of lyrics which would be the part that actually provides impact.. Why? So they can include retarded people and little children in their target markets. And also, cause they are just too stoopid to pull it off in the first place. Problem is: you used to be able to listen to the radio and say "hey, this is an awesome band, I'll buy their CD", but nowadays with all the crap on the radio you can't anymore. And then if you do go out and buy the CD, there is still a good chance that only the one song on there is good and the others are all just fillers.

Might be part of the reason why piracy has become a viable option...

[Freaky freaky]
4 minutes, Eh
(repeat 7 times)
Come on, ah
Yeah, hah
Breakdown, come on
(Justin)
Hey, uh
Come on
Madonna
(Madonna)
Come on boy
I've been waiting for somebody to pick up my stroll
Uh
(Justin)
Well, don't waste time
Give me the sign
Tell me how you wanna roll
Mmm
(Madonna)
I want somebody to speed it up for me
Then take it down slow
There's enough room for both
(Justin)
Well, I can handle that
You just gotta show me where it's at
Are you ready to go
Are you ready to go

ps. Another way to sing this song is to repeat "Jacaranda" to the tune

Hmmmm...both bands were formed in the same year :/

Theres nothing wrong with Led Zep either btw.

I laughed at Idols watching that Dave guy talk about the mainstream and that is where the money is at etc... and how poor the other people are. I mean what the fk guy...these people hardly last a year and they are gone...they mean nothing. David Gilmour, Bruce Springsteen...heck even Madonna...they mean something as artists and would buy him and whatever label he has with their spare change.

What I love about some of these other bands...eg Dream Theater did this...is that they tell their label company to go and get stuffed and they just do their own thing. And usually they end up being worth far more. When someone like BMG tells you that your music is not mainstream enough it's BS IMO.

These idiots milk artists for money through whatever means and then when they are worth no more they are thrown out. It is just business. Fair enough...but why would I want to waste my time listening to saturated BS marketed by a company who gets 95% or more of the returns and hardly anything goes to the artist anyway.

Some bands still write good lyrics. Within Temptation, Blind Guardian and Kamelot all tell stories with their albums. They weave the outlines with the music and the lyrics paint the pictures.

Then you get bands that have great lyrics about everyday life like Katatonia and Sentenced (R.I.P. as they're now Poisonblack - Still great lyrics).

If you're looking for something a bit more emotional and majestic, there's always the doom bands like Draconian and My Dying Bride and the old-guard like Anathema and Paradise Lost.

I reckon the big thing is pop is not about lyrics. It's supposed to be catchy and that's it. If you want lyrical entertainment, look towards rock. It's always been this way. Think back to "The Locomotion" etc.

Lyrics mean just about nothing to me. I do like the human voice as an instrument, tho.

Even so, when i hear Beyonce singing "Now a diva is the female version of a hustler" i wanna scream. Ironically, the female version is actually "whore." Go figure...

O get of ur bluddy high horse: non-mainstream music these days is usually a pile of pretentious no talent wanna-be horse manure.

Dude just start shaking ur as$ and get it over with.. just watch ur self while ur at it :D

pffft .... I don't mean the pretentious emo-supposed-indie kark either :p I mean the stuff that matters - Industrial and Goth stuff, music with proper lyrics. Heck, I can even enjoy Paradise Lost (as Nocturnity mentioned) purely based on their lyrics :)

Can't but help think that it should be 'If I were a boy'. Thoughts?

The actual song title is "If I Were A Boy"

I know I'll get knocked for this but I've always liked Pink's lyrics, even if they're a bit OTT she writes about stuff she's actually going through.

I think that Beyonce's If I were a Boy has a lovely sound track, without the lyrics it is still awesome. Big ups to the producers!

LOL - I've been an applicant for quite a while now, I was beginning to wonder if my application had been misplaced.

So the title is all cool.

But leaping back on topic. If the song had been titled 'If I Were a Girl' and had been sung by some bloke, it would have been very short and would have been limited to just the one verse involving being in a shower.

:D LMFAO!

There are so many of these kark feminist self-help emo songs though. Haven't women realised we guys don't really give a kark anymore?

Hear catchy tune...sing along, go apeshyte and flop around like a fish out of water...eventually get bored of catchy tune...listen to another catchy tune...repeat process...

This is the musical life of a pop listener  really deep and emotional stuff that is.

Why should music be an emotional thing? Why not music just for fun?

Boy bands are the worst, you'd think they get their lyrics out of a teenage girl's diary.

Because it is supposed to be an art? :p

Music can be for fun but I would like to know that the artist I am listening to is also capable of more than a catchy vibe. In moderation is more like it.

Been so tired of mainstream **** for the last 2 years, that I found myself getting alot of stuff from the 60's to 80's to help me pass time.

Even my Radiohead collection has worn itself out.

Nowadays I've been coming across quite a few good Japanese artists' songs that I like, nearly all derived from anime, but the songs are good and the lyrics are meaningful.

Also turned back to classical music and then been getting alot more into jazz and guitar instrumentals.
Kotaro Oshio being a favourite.

Music really isn't what it used to be.
Music told a story through lyrics, the manner in which the vocalist brought across those lyrics and the collective of the instruments.
These days it's all about pretty boys and gals that can be marketed and happen to have a voice that can pull off pop tunes.

And 100% in agreement with the Chasing Pavements comments.
When that song came out it just really pissed me off cos it really is pop trash.
I never bothered to listen to the song, but stuck in traffic one day, made the effort of listening to the lyrics. And to this day, cannot think of what "Chasing Pavements" could possibly make reference to.
The long walk of life with grass on the one side, tar on the other, being interrupted with periodic lines which move you along to the next phase?

No, music has not impressed me of late.

I honestly thought Chasing Pavements had to do with prostitution...then I saw the video and it made even less sense to me.

I thought chasing pavements was about a girl in love with a guy, but not sure if she should commit. Otherwise it might be some kind of addiction she can't shake...

Then she wonders if she should keep on in the party scene drinking herself into a stupor. So drunk that's she's 'chasing pavements'. Fall-over drunk. A life-style that would lead nowhere, or if she should give it up.

Hell I don't know. You people want the stories told to you, it's a song, not a novel! You get various genres, not all are about the words, the rhythm is sometimes more important.

If you can weave some logic into a song that means something to you, so be it, but don't expect a story in everything.
