Hey there guys

Returned to SA 3 weeks ago from UK, being there 6 years.

I got used to the having the luxury of 1mb Cable Modem with no cap. (Fraction of cost to here)

Being a big MMO Player, such as Dark Age of Camelot, Lineage 2, City of Heroes and waiting for Words of Warcraft, i was wondering what people find best to use for international gaming.
From SA to East Coast USA Servers.
UK to States on 1mb Line was about 100 to 133ms but often did flux to 250 or so.

Sadly i am just out of range for ADSL :( and Sentech My Wireless (Hillcrest Natal) So thats broadband out the window for me. (Not to mention the horrific prices n caps we get)

I also heard that Satalite option is terrible for gaming due to its poor latency.

So i guess i have to settle for ISDN 128, how is this for speeds to the states for MMO Gaming? Before i decide to go for it.

If so are there any other options i have ? (If i missed any)

Any info will be great :)

Cheers

ISDN is actually not bad for MMO's provided you choose the correct ISP. With both Storm Internet (http://www.stormnet.co.za/) and Datapro (http://www.datapro.co.za/) you should get pings at about 300ms range to East Coast USA, and about 250ms to Europe. Used them both on and off for my international gaming needs for more than 2 yrs before upgrading to unshaped ADSL.

I live in Hillcrest Natal. The whole of Hillcrest is supported, ADSL that is, I have ADSL, so does my mate and my brother in law and we are on different sides of hillcrest so if you want ADSL it is an option. I play on SGS and have ping of 15-40 with an ave of 24. That is on the counter strike servers.

If you go the ISDN route on the same servers you will be looking at a ping of 60 and if you opt for dial up you looking of a ping of 120-250 with some heavy spikes. If you want to play on the int servers ISDN is a better option than ADSL as the is no shaping of bandwidth.

Thanks for the quick reply guys, yeah i thought i was in range, i contacted Telkom and they did a line check and said i was not in range, (Winston Park) But i guess classed in hillcrest. I would happily go to ADSL but telkom refuse to have anything to do with it. They said on the 767 Exchange its random, some people get it some dont. Hopefully soon in future it will be expanded that wee extra bit. I am guessing i am just out of range. The internet Cafe down the road on 767 exchange does have DSL, so it is pretty frustrating.

Gonna settle for ISDN 128 for time being then, and check out Datapro.

Thanks again!

Noctes, why not try to setup some sort of wireless link between you and James? You need line of sight, so check this first.

I don't think that winston park will be able to even recieve sentech let alone a 2.4ghz signal from me. No line of site and it is also called the Valley of a 1000 hills, a name not good when it comes to wireless. Winston park also has about a 100000000 huge tree's which will kill any signal. So wired is the only real option for us hill billy's :-(

Sorry for long reply been busy on move.

I ordered my ISDN Line, will be placed on 14th, just to confirm is Datapro best for ISDN? Or any other good ISPS i must look out for? I am still pretty new on the ISP Scene in SA :(

Cheers!
