Thank you BBSA! :)

The pings are not as good as ADSL or WiMax.

See http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=157622&page=3 for test results but it's also not all that bad.

Can you test it again sometime between 8PM and 7AM, just so I can compare apples with apples?

Thanks again!

Don't think Telkom is going that route just yet. They are selling E220's with their contracts...

No, they do HSUPA.

From their website (http://www.telkom.co.za/products_services/w-cdma/do_move/benefits.html):

Telkom brings you the latest HSDPA and HSUPA wireless network, the network supports devices able of 7.2Mbps high-speed downlink packet access and 2.4Mbps high-speed uplink packet access.

My bad then.
Here are the three modems Telkom sells:

Huawei E220 Dongle No UPA

Huawei E960 Gateway.
(Dont think it has UPA): "
Band Class
Supports HSDPA/UMTS 2100 M
Supports GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
Technical Standards
1. HSDPA/WCDMA: 3GPP R5 2004/06
2. GSM/GPRA/EDGE: 3GPP R99 2003/12 "

Huawei E180 Gateway Does have UPA (newly added to the list.)

Getting hold of the E180 could be a bit of a problem.... not even the Telkom direct shop within Telkom has stock of them and they weren't sure when they would receive stock.

I get these speeds on my E220.

According to the Telkm coverage map, I should have good coverage.
The signal strength is usually very weak though.

Any ideas

I am in Cape Town and get similar results 0.5 thru CT and 3.5 thru JHB. Now I am a bit dof with this stuff, can us Capies set our modem to rout thru JHB instead, and hence get better download speeds?

If you are near the Linton Grange, Sidwell, Greenbushes, Walmer, Summerstrand and maybe Central towers than you should be able to connect to the Telkom 3G data network using your Telkom 3G sim. Not sure about voice, but I hate telephones... Not sure why it has not been commercially rolled out yet, but it is time they wake up and smell some clean PE air up there in the Pretoria Ivory Towers!!!

Why are you people Pinging LOCAL ONLY?

If you use 3G You're paying for international no matter where you browse. Ping some Berlin/London servers rather. Or perhaps Talinn in Sweden

Hi guys,

I'm considering getting the 3g Telkom service considering its half the ADSL price, and its wireless.
However, I would like to know how good it would be for online international gaming purposes - latency of between 200-400ms good enough?

Also, I'd probably use my Sony Ericsson K810i - it that fast enough?

3g is usually not suitable for international gaming.

this is insane -I went to go talk to the Telkom people today - their service offering is to provide under 10ms!!! that sounds so completely improbable.
Just tested my work line and its running on 699ms!

I'm guessing that the 3G will be shaped?
