BTW, PWP is brilliant. My connection in Centurion is fantastic. Thanks to the peeps from PWP for helping me out. Especially Th0rn and CodeWarrior.
For the sake of uptake of this fantastic tech, I hope the PWP and JAWUG link is done ASAP! :D

Just a quick question: how does everyone on the pwp communicate with each other to set up lan games, let ppl know about the ftp servers, etc?
IRC, Google talk, MSN, win popup, ICQ, etc?

Like Ryder said. PWP uses internal IRC and also Skype... Mostly IRC. If you are on the network, you can scan the network with a subnet scanner available online to see what services are available at any given time.

Maybe if we can ask the owner of the Spar nicely? but still won't help me as I don't have LOS to the Spar.

Hi Guys
At the moment there are two wugs operating in the Pretoria area, due the politics and personality clashes.
If you live in the Centurion area have a look at:
http://www.pwp.za.net
irc://irc.pwp.za.net
And if you live in the Pretoria East area you can join the IRC channel:
irc://irc.ptawug.za.net
I’m living in the Moot area against the Magaliesberg and am busy planning some nodes and trying to get a wug running in the Moot. You will find me idling on the pwp IRC and you are welcome to plot your nodes on http://wind.pwp.za.net and see if you have line of sight to the access points.

All good and well that I have line of sight protzkrog but ptawug doesn't want to talk to me. They see me as a spy, which by itself is laughable because to my knowledge a WUG is a neutral and open community network so there isn't any need for secretive behavior.
But like I said before if you live in Pretoria East try www.ptawug.za.net for now, if you live in Centurion try www.pwp.za.net and if you live in the Moot area you can find me on irc.pwp.za.net (irc://irc.pwp.za.net) and please plot yourself on wind.pwp.za.net.

I said it before I will say it again, at the moment there is some personality clashes between PWP and PTAWUG members. I would urge anybody that wants to join the wug to join the two channels #pwp and #ptawug and find out for yourself whats happening in the community. Use the above server irc://irc.ptawug.za.net and if you auto join #ptawug just type "/join #pwp" and you will be on both channels, or you could just use the PWP IRC server irc://irc.pwp.za.net.
For more information an PWP have a look on their website www.pwp.za.net the same goes for PTAWUG www.ptawug.za.net. PWP at the moment covers more the centurion area with a link to JAWUG and PTAWUG covers more the pretoria east area. If you live in the moot area please contact me.

Depends on how much you willing to spend. Could range from R1000 - R3000.
Also your distance from the AP? ( will determine if you need a high or low gain antenna).
What frequency is the highsite running on, if it does only have one frequency range operating.

We had very succesfull WUGmeet last night!!
PTAWUG's growth is amazing!!
One thing though, people did comment about how easy it is and should be for ppl who really know nothing about wifi or IT for that matter to connect!!!
With all the help and IRC etc. anyone can connect.... 2 more High sites are about to be completed adding more coverage.
Next big thing will propably be connecting the Tuks Res to our network!!

Project X - yes, from Groenkloof and Riveria highsites - WIFI is not exact, it does not stay within bounds or borders, that coverage map is only an APPROXIMATION. You can connect to a highsite if you can SEE it, thus you need to plot yourself on www.wug.za.net so you can do a line of sight calculation.

Is there any open source software I can upgrade my ASUS WL-500G Deluxe with to join the wug?
I have been doing a bit of digging around on this one, and it does seem possible to remove the internal 2.4ghz mini-pci radio, and replace it with a 5.8ghz mini-pci radio. Also, it appears that both openwrt (http://wiki.openwrt.org/OpenWrtDocs/Hardware/Asus/WL500G), and dd-wrt (http://www.macsat.com/macsat/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,50/topic,421.msg2542/) are supported on this unit.
A 802.11 abg radio should cost around about R220 or so from companies such as Uniterm (www.dbg.co.za), or Miro (http://www.miro.co.za).
I cannot guarantee that this will work, but the threads I discovered on OpenWRT's site seem to indicate success. If you have a mini-pci card available which you can try, or borrow, rather than buying one, it would definately be worth a shot. You may find a compatible card inside a nearby laptop too.
If possible, give this a shot, and let us know the results?
Keep on Wugging! :D
Thanks! :o

as far as i know the POE adapter is included, just make sure from scoop - you can mail dalton@scoop.co.za for a quote.
ja people use the network for filesharing, gaming, voip, etc - anything that can run on TCP/IP - its a open network - anyone can run or do anything as long as it is non-commercial.

you are on the internet now, about mmm 100 million people that can hack/break your PC.
there are 183 people connected to PTAWUG.
we have never had a problem like that - PTAWUG are not a bunch of hooligans.
every person on the wug is responsible to keep their antivirus up to date (just like on the internet) as well as firewall or secure their home LAN (just like on the internet).
i only run anti-virus

nope, connect on IRC - irc.jawug.za.net #ptawug and request an IP there.
from http://www.ptawug.co.za/content_list_11:
Quickstart:
1. Plot location on www.wug.za.net
2. Download KML
3. Calculate possible line of sight
4. Connect on IRC (irc.ptawug.co.za) and discuss your scenario
5. Buy equipment (www.scoop.co.za)
6. Install equipment and connect to the www.ptawug.co.za/Highsite_AntennaDirection SSID
7. Connect on IRC and request IPs
8. Enjoy the wug
from IRC:
[08:23] <Frikkie> bitches[1]: In order to obtain an IP address for your connection to PTAWUG you need to get hold of a person able to help you.
[08:23] <Frikkie> bitches[2]: On PTAWUG these people are admin members commonly known as IPBitches.
[08:23] <Frikkie> bitches[3]: Please remember that these people all have jobs and help new members to connect in their free time.
[08:23] <Frikkie> bitches[4]: A bit of patience is is therefore required by you before being helped in order to obtain an IP address.
[08:23] <Frikkie> bitches[5]: The following IPBitches may be contacted on irc in order to setup the HighSite and help you configure your hardware and PC

202 users connected to PTAWUG from inception on 28 Aug 2007 to 10 Dec 2008.
I would like to thank everyone that helped:
by promoting the network
struggling with routing issues,
carried tools and antennas up mountains
got burnt by the sun fixing highsites
risked life and limb climbing towers to install equipment
did signal tests at prospective users
tanne for organising us our great PTAWUG branded tshirts, hoodies, caps, mugs and stickers
normal users that expand their equipment on their roofs (or put up 15m towers in the backyard) so others can connect through them
our suppliers miro.co.za and scoop.co.za for providing wuggers with easy access to equipment
organisations like myadsl.co.za that took a positive intrest in PTAWUG and helped with promotion and donations
the broes from CTWUG that gave us the idea to post items that we need donations for on the website - http://www.ptawug.co.za/content_list_18
the guys from Jawug that stood by and helped PTAWUG from the beginning
anyone that did something positive for the network
Building and running PTAWUG is a team effort.
P.S
www.scoop.co.za closes on the 19th of Dec, so you better get your equipment before then and connect!

Joburg and Pta, at this stage, is connected.
Which prompts the question - how do places like Cape Town, PE and Durban connect as well? :D
One solution would be to ask Telkom/Neotel/Vocadom/MTN/whoever whether they'll sponsor a backhaul link (even if it's 16k) between Gauteng and the other cities... P2P/FTP and HTTP file transfer can be blocked on these links to allow IRC (and other non-intensive traffic) to pass through without any bottlenecks.
Another is that we build and launch our own satellite :p
Nice to see the WUG's growing at a steady rate!
Cheers!

Weerlig is 'n probleem.
Who knows.

PTAWUG usercount now stands at 322, thats 100 new users in the last three months, more than one user a day that joined. We count a user as a house that has a wireless link to PTAWUG, thus there can be more people that use the network, but 322 wireless links to the network from houses/buildings.
One amazing thing is that the network infrastructure grows and expands almost automatically as the users get more - normal clients put up equipment to broadcast signal as well, or they connect to a second highsite and provide redundancy on the network.
Thanks to mybroadband for allowing us to use this forum to promote the free networks in South Africa and also supporting us by writing articles and donating towars highsites.
Hatfield highsite is now online, stew and manifesto got the backbone link up from Waterkloof Glen highsite, yesterday afternoon. The highsite covers the central Pretoria area on 5.8ghz. Thanks to Abraham and FoeFFie who worked hard to get the site up as well as everyone who donated towards the hardware.

Yes, if they can connect to you via Ethernet or by adding a extra radio with a omni antenna to your routerboard, but this will increase the price of the gear you need to buy.
