Got mine today too, got my login after phoning friendly chaps at the helpdesk, and the guy that called me back (within 10 minutes) give my my account details, and said that the Radius server would take 10-15 minutes to update.
1. They phoned me back.
2. They did what was requested
3. They know what a radius server is...
whoa.
The signal on 1.8ghz looks much improved.

For those wondering - the service has not OFFICIALLY launched AFAIK ;-)
It's just that the current testers (2.3Ghz) were offered early access onto the network.
What I appreciate it the approach taken:
1) They've provided details of what they are doing
2) How long they expect things to take
3) Seem genuinely interested to get feedback

hehee ... the tower that's supposed to cover me isn't even live yet ;-)
1.8 GHz (plus a few extra towers) kicks the living daylights out of the origional 2.3Ghz gear I was testing ...
While it's early days I am quite hopefull. My approach right now is simple - I can have access to a service that is currently very good without being bound to a 24month contract from hell (and little/no service delivery).

I echo Harth's sentiment...I'm going ADSL until next year sometime, when I can see significant proof that Iburst is a sustainable service...
Besides if Iburst proves to be good and maintains service levels as it grows, Hellkom will probably have to change their ADSL pricing, which means I score anyway [:)]

My appoach is somewhat different lewstherin...
As there is currently no contract I pay month by month ... If the service degrades extensively I need to sell the modem ... that's it ... no fighting/bitching/complaining ....
While ADSL is certainly an option for some I want the mobility a wireless offering affords.
After having had my fingers burnt with my previous provider (*cough*) I am cautious but optimistic at present. I would suggest to most that it seems a viable service but as with everything in SA - give it time...
Just remember that iBurst only goes "public" (AFAIK) in March or so next year - these guys certainly seem to want to do it "right". And with such an attitude I am willing to provide my input, support and admiration.

Then iBurst are obviously way out of touch with the market.
Every 'average user' I know is on dialup because it costs them so little and they really don't want anything else. Of course, I don't have any statistics apart from the people I know. Out of 100 people, 15 people I know are interested in the Internet to a small degree and only 5 of those are regular users. The rest express no interest at all in products like MyWireless or iBurst. It's an older age group, which explains why.
They have a fixed landline at home/soho and quite honestly don't care about the internet, except for getting email - most of them don't even surf the net !
Then you get the business users in larger offices who are a bit more savvy. Depending on the company size, they are on Diginet, IDSN or ADSL or a combination - iBurst means nothing to them.
An IT guy I know who maintains a network for about 150 people wouldn't touch wireless technology like this with a bargepole right now - tried and tested technology is an absolute must have.
So who do we have left who would actually like to use a service like this ?
Gamers and Downloaders - it doesn't take a brain surgeon to understand this ! - this is the market crying out for decent services and it's a huge market just waiting to be tapped. The younger generation want fast access and as much downloading and gaming as they can lay thier grubby little mits on.
iBurst could make this work if they just use thier nogins. There's a market waiting to be filled by a company with the balls to compete with ADSL for heavy internet users - the person who downloads and surfs a lot. Sure, gaming is out of the question because of the technology and latency issues.
With a LOGICAL cap in place, they can handle the network abuse.
I can't believe that they think the service it stands is going to compete with ADSL ? - I mean, look at this for instance :-
<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">All other applications will be restricted to a maximum of 64kbps burst rate.<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">
That's just stupid, it really is. So all you get at top speed that's useful is mail, www and ftp ? - it's rubbish. I don't know ANYONE who would want this over ADSL, except because they have no choice or because they don't want to do business with Telkom.
iBurst are out of thier minds and have misread a market that could give them far better profit in the long run.
Of course, it's possible they may release some better packages in the future, but why not now ? - my guess is bandwidth costs ? [xx(]

I definitely don't want to do business with Telkom. I'll be the first to jump ship when we are offered a good alternative. But these guys are just plain stupid and seem to be a carbon copy of Sentech. Firstly, you don't start a business unless you have enough capital to get it off the ground properly. And secondly, when starting a business, you look at the long term plan and not at how quickly you can start making a HUGE profit. You use your head, start slowly. The more customers you can bring in the better service you can offer. And to ensure you keep those customers happy, you offer a good service. Remember, a happy customer is a loyal customer. (Usually.) I know I am.

Exactly. Whats the point in releasing better packages later? Why not offer them now so that they can bring in more customers from the start. And if they don't have enough bandwidth, they should not have started this business in the beginning.

sorry dyl, I hate to jump on the bandwagon of complainers, but
WHAT THE FSCK
up till now, I was very impressed with iBurst technology, I've generally heard from most users that there local latency was always sub 70ms, but this was all before presubscription, and maybe it was slightly exagerated by those users!
Regardt, have you been plotting the service on smokeping, I would be interested in checking the graphs of the last 3 months.
I remember another service that seemed quite similiar, until more users hopped on board. I'm not sure how many users are currently subscribed, but that degredation in latency is unacceptable for initial rollout.
It simply shows how quickly things will degrade on the medium once 5000 users are online!
I hope i'm wrong !
only time will tell.
