Yo guys world of warcraft open beta has begun. Are any of you gonna be playing it? I was in the stress test and I really enjoyed it, lets hope it comes here ;)

Sorry, to burst your bubble but it <b>won't</b> becoming here because of the following.

- It's a MMORPG so you have to pay a subscription service
- The servers will be international and that will be bad lag
- -=SGS=- nor MWEB won't host it because they have to pay for server rental, which they won't do.

Counting down...
123 days till the end of Hellkom

Actually, this is incorrect.

I know this thread is old, but there's some bad thinking in this country with regards to MMO's. SA is a small market (the entire continent of Africa even), which is the main reason we are not specifically targetted in any MMO marketing. It just doesn't make business sense.

They won't ever be hosted locally, but that does not mean we cannot play them.

Personally I've been playing MMO's for about 5 or 6 years now - all on overseas servers. I've played WoW/SWG/EQ/AC/UO and AO. The connections I've used have been 56k modems, ISDN 64k, ISDN 128k and Sentech. The lag I've gotten has not been that bad, except for when I was on Sentech. My lag using ISDN was in the 600 range, which is very playable and not even noticable. The vast majority of MMO's are designed to be latency tolerant to a degree (planetside may be the exception). It's not like playing Counterstrike or any of the FPS's.

A few friends of mine and I are big MMO players, have been for a long time. We're currently playing EQ2 and EVE Online, but are pretty keen to play WoW. Blizzard has introduced some measures recently that are designed to filter all EU players to the EU servers, and US players to the US servers. They have said that they are specifically using billing info as the mechanism, so if you do not have an american billing address, you cannot play on the US servers. However, we're working on ways to get around that. There's no word yet on if they're using IP filtering or not.

We discuss most of this stuff at http://www.arcaneer.com/forum/ so stop by there in a week or 2 if you're interested in this stuff. We should have a definite answer on if we can play or not soon. We've got a pre-ordered copy of WoW on the way, so we'll see what happens.

Anyway, hope that clears up any misconceptions.

Yo Rath thx for the reply yeah i will check those forums out i definately wanna try and get this game. Let me now if we will be able to play it in SA. Thx again

Chris

This is why we <b> won't</b> get WoW.

http://www.nag.co.za/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=7292&sid=2489f014ad86ed26d20d604a427f8a4d

Read first post.

Running around, catching a cheetah (without a gun) is like resistance against Telkom - futile.

Rath

The post that you point out states that we won't be getting local servers for WoW. This is true, and I agree, as I said above. He's saying nothing new. It's also completely irrelevant because, unless you have a Sentech connection, you can play on US and European servers anyway. To sum it up: We do not need local servers to play MMO's like WoW (assuming they do not do IP filtering for WoW).

This is interesting. I only discovered this thread now! Damn!
Where can we get WOW?
Paulo: Is it working fine from SA?

Please give the server where all the SA peeps hang out!
played the beta, loved it to pieces (played every day and night - when working through the beta)

Paulo: how do you pay the monthly sub?

Chris
29-12-2004, 07:00 PM
Koosbeer, from reading from the official WoW website, it says that if you want to play on a EU server, you must have a EU billing address (so if you don't live there, you must have relatives there)

I can't answer the other questions because I haven't played WoW in BETA or normally.

P.S - The launch date for WoW is sometime in March for the EU.

There are probably about 100 South Africans playing WoW on US servers at the moment. The biggest South African guild has over 40 members, and is ranked 10th on the Stormrage server. It is quite possible to play from South Africa. You will need:

- beta copy (which patches to the full retail client)
- a valid account / cd key

For details on how to register with a valid .za credit card pm me. A lot more details about how to hook up from South Africa can be found at:

Prophecy WoW forums (http://new.prophecy.co.za/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=wow)
SGS WoW forums (http://games.saix.net/cgi-bin/sgsbb/ikonboard.cgi?;act=SF;f=199)

If you do dome browsing in those forums, you'll find contact details for local suppliers of account keys and game-time codes (once registered with your c/c, you get 30 days free. Additional time - 60 days - can be purchased by entering a game-time code)

Once you're hooked up, look me up:
My in-game profile (http://www.wowrankings.com/viewb.htm?name=Timbawood&s_id=87)
Our guild profile (http://www.wowrankings.com/guild_profile.htm?name=Flame%20of%20Anduril&s_id=87)

Link to local guild forum (http://www.ikonstruct.co.uk/wow/)

Latency issues are virtually non-existant provided you have a good ISDN connection, or either shaped or unshaped ADSL (384 or 512). 56k dialups have reported issues when they enter heavily populated terrains.

The problem with internationally hosted MMORPGs is when you use ADSL, everything is dandy in the beginning of the month, but when you get capped, don't even bother.

I would love to play WoW, even if it is international and my ping is a worse than what it should be if I was playing a local server. The problem lies not with Blizzard and its unwillingness to give us a local server ( because honestly the market here for MMORPGs is way to small compared to elsewhere ), the fault lies with Telkom and their damn stingy 3 gig cap!

Infact if you take it further, if there was no Telkomonopoly here, the market might infact be large enough to allow for a local server due to lower tarrifs for faster internet.

Oh well, we will just have to see what the future brings, hopefully alot less of Telskom!

Nur'Zul is PvP (Player vs Player) while Stormrage is PvE (Player vs Environment). On PvE servers it's possible to go PvP provided both parties agree - you turn on a "PvP flag". On PvP servers your flag is on automatically all the time. Personally I prefer PvE since you have the best of both worlds, but it's all personal choice in the end. Particularly with our crappy international latency, you will be at an immediate disadvantage going PvP i.m.o.

The best u can do to pay the monthly sub is to get hold of someone traveling to the states and get them to buy u a 6month subscription while they are there.
Or u can just wait 2-3 months and the game will be launched in S.A.

We will even have our own free Beta testing.
Of coarse we won't be getting any local servers but don't let that get u down, a lot of South Africans are playing it even on dial up modems and say that the game is designed so well that they play with very mild lag issues, except when there are huge amounts of ppl around.

But ppl using ISDN, ASDL or Sentech will have it made.

sybawoods

Does that mean that on a PvE sever an alliance character cannot automatically attack a horde character?

Correct. However, if the Horde character has his PvP (Player vs Player) flag enabled, then you can attack at any time. If it is disabled, you will not be able to initiate an attack.

Think of PvE as a massive co-op mode, with the ability to go head-to-head with other humans whenever you feel like it.

Just last night I was busy with a huge quest in the Badlands, and stumbled across a horde character completing a quest of his own. We literally ran into each other, sthen stared for a few seconds in shock. I made my character show him the finger (type /rude in the chat box to enable this), then immediately after I spat on him :D :D . In a flash he enabled his PvP flag, and we went toe-to-toe... less than a minute later I was dancing on his dead body :p . Awesome feeling.

Apparantly this is the case, S.A will be having it's own official launch in March-April.
The person u can speak to about his is Bruce, he is in charge of bringing WOW into S.A.
Go to www.blizzard.com
click on sales, and go to international sales, he's contact details are there under numetro. It's a local call so don't worry.

Hope this helps you make a decision, I have a feeling Europe may get it a month before we do.

oops... busted. Been so far down lost all track of time. Call me a liar for a couple of weeks :p but must say you have it worse than me or your single :p lvl 18 Nightelf druid. Skinning 137 Leatherworking 56. Fishing 3, impossible with the lag  . Ventured out of tedrassil yesterday. Very scary

P.S. What ping times are you experiencing?

Brannor
15-03-2005, 02:48 PM
I'm on ISDN 64k (Telkom ISP) and getting pings if < 600. Sometimes down to <500 even during peak. Very nice, and quite playable.

Shadow Moon is a PvP server, so often gank-squads about...but if you know where to XP, you're ok. Friday's Honour system should sort out some of the ganking...we hope.

And yes, I am single. But I'm not new to MMORPGs, played Asheron's Call 2 and 18 months of DAoC while living in London. I get into a routine and XP ok. And that's only playing at night on Weekdays, and on weekends.

Brannor
16-03-2005, 12:14 PM
That's actually nice. Though I've heard some people get high latency occasionally with ADSL... I never have, not in the month of playing.

Also, I don't really expect my ISDN costs to be anywhere near ADSL, and besides, I don't use it for much more than surfing a few sites, patches, and WoW (+ plugins for WoW), so I really don't need huge bandwidth.

Shame... yes, a wife or g/f can be a bit of a problem, unless they're understanding or you get them something that they like that they can do at the same time. :) Some of my UK friends are lucky enough to have wives that play too.

Brannor
19-03-2005, 09:32 AM
Does sound tempting now...cause your ping is basically the same as mine...
And of course, on public holidays, like this coming week, you'll be able to play all day, if the boss lets you.

Wonder if the 192k package with a 3gb cap is the way to go...since I don't need lots of bandwidth...

Rookie mistake :D you can teach them how to walk towards the stream of water, but you can't teach them to take off their clothes and take a bath infront of strangers while being photographed and streamed over live webcams accross the world.

Point is, they like to learn things on their own, if she wanted to know something, she'd asked.

Everytime this happens to me, I ask myself "Is it me playing this game?" if the answer is "no" I keep my mouth shut. Even though the other person is losing horribly and you can see the obvious mistakes

Ok, so I've gone and orderred an upgrade to HomeDSL192, and will use Telkom as my ISP with a 3GB standard account. Also taking the plunge on a 24 month contract...

Waiting for their email with the contract, and then see how long it take to get upgraded.

I just hope the ping is as good as you say. ;)

-G

FireFLi
22-03-2005, 11:37 AM
nooooo... don't sign that contract!!! :( rather buy the modem, with the 2nd SNO on the horizon you don't want to be locked in. For about R500 you can get a modem/router which far more flexible than the droll that telkom are handing out.

Brannor
22-03-2005, 01:37 PM
Ok, so if I buy my own modem, I also need to get the surge protector...just where do I get these?

But the thing is...even if I cancel later, it's basically a penalty of R70 a month...so won't be THAT much...not like my BT ADSL when I was in the UK, where they forced me to pay the full fee for every month of the remaining period...now THAT, was a small fortune. :P

-G

Oh, and Skills info is now:

Leatherworking 270
Skinning 300
Fishing 240-245 (can't remember exactly)
Cooking 300

I worked out that fishing/cooking makes life a little cheaper for feeding my tiger.
Oh, and I MUST recomend the PetFeeder addon...really good for having your pet auto-feed itself. Just categorise food you carry into whichever diet your pet eats, and set the level to content/happy, and whenever it drops out of that, it'll "search your packs" for food.

FireFLi

Oh my word , what level are you G? No where near those stats :o . You haven't mentioned race, class and level. I am a NE Druid lvl 25. I have basically the same skills but haven't chosen my second secondary skill but will most likely be cooking. What server are u playing on?

Anyway here are my vitals :D

Leatherworking 126
Skinning 190
Fishing 18 (not a priority)

Are u using the standard UI or a 3rd party one. I ask this cos u mentioned the pet feeder plugin, ah light bulb just lit.... your a hunter. :p

P.S. Did not see the 1st post :o , 300 on ISDN I averaged btw 500 - 650 on ADSL this weekend which makes fishing almost impossible.

Brannor
30-03-2005, 09:36 AM
Server: Shadow Moon
Race: Orc (Male)
Profession: Hunter
Level: 53

Primary skills:
- Leatherworking: 273
- Skinning: 300

Secondary skills:
- Cooking: 300
- Fishing: 252
- First Aid: 80ish

And yes, I use a number of addons. Mapnotes, Mapcoords, Lootlink, Bottombars, Petfeeder, Hunterpetskills, Zonelevels, Tacklebox (all I can think of offhand).

And 500-650 is perfectly fine for fishing. Just use some lures...they allow you a bit longer to react. Generally, when you fish, the ping will be much better, as you're not moving. My average ping is still 450-600.

Am going to ask Telkom to allow NORMAL prioritisation on port 3724...

FireFLi
02-04-2005, 05:09 PM
And the moment u can only play on the EU/US servers which entails having someone get you a key or copy of the game from the aforementioned places. It's easier to play on EU servers as they don't seem to have a problem processing SA credit cards. If you want to play on US servers you need a US credit card or gaming cards.

Darric
08-04-2005, 10:34 AM
So I got my ISDN installed about three weeks ago, and have been happily playing WoW (EU) with my brother ever since. (Which reminds me... I need to sort out those credit card details before my trial month expires...)

With both of us networked and playing simultaneously over ISDN, we get pretty constant sub-500 pings. After hearing what I've heard about ADSL, and now that I'm a solid WoW addict, I wouldn't dream of changing to something else until things improve.

My characters:

On Dunemaul (PVP) I have a level 22 Night Elf Druid, named Darric. Skills are Herbalism (165), Alchemy (115), Fishing (25).

On Dragonmaw (PVP) I have a level 8 Orc Warrior, named Raddic. Skills are mining (0), Blacksmithing (0). (I only use this guy when playing with another friend who hardly plays. =p)

Thoroughly enjoying the game, best MMOG since the glory days of Ultima Online.

Brannor
09-04-2005, 09:05 AM
Using SAOL, I get pings that are almost the same as ISDN, granted, you get maybe 1, or 2 packet loss spikes a day, you still have teh advantage of playing whenever you like, and being able to switch off your PC at night on the weekends. :P

R399 for 3GB unshaped? A good buy IMHO.

FireFLi

Yip, ISDN does deliver better pings, although since I got my unshapped account I am consistently experiencing pings between 450 - 550. :D That said wait til you hit a public holiday and see the horror shock bill you receive from helkom, especially now that they are increasing their local call rates  . Nice thing about ADSL is you also don't have to wait fro callmore to kick in. Also playing on Dragonmaw lvl 29 NE Druid.

Who knows we might run into eachother some time.

Ok, I am getting 128K ISDN some time in April. Only reason for this, is WoW and possibly GuildWars. From what I have read ISDN gives pretty good pings. Entirely playable I suppose? Don't even notice lag?

Now I want to ask if Telkom's modem is good enough. That itty bitty USB modem. I find it entirely believable that Telkom would sabotage their modems.

isdn is way better with pings then adsl even if you have an unshaped account. just alot more expensive than adsl but if you wanna play games then isdn is awesome for international.

if i remember correctly which maybe i wont because the nukecap guys think im brainless kinda like their kuk company anyhow moving on.

when i had isdn 128k i used to play on a specific battlefield 1942 server just about every night my ping where in the region of 250-300 with 40 players.

i went to the same server when i got adsl and i was in the 400's at night

o and telkom's modems are great but just go check out a price at local computer store other than incredible corruption. matrix technologies sells cheap adsl modem
