RAFA BENITEZ is weighing up a summer swoop for Spanish star David Silva.

The Reds boss has identified the Valencia man as one of his top transfer targets – but will only do business if the price is right.

Valencia have hit massive financial difficulties in recent months and are set to sell crown jewels Silva, David Villa and Raul Albiol in an effort to bring their debt of 450m euros under control.

It is Silva who has caught Benitez’s eye though, with the Liverpool manager on the lookout for a versatile attacking player who can figure in a number of positions behind Fernando Torres as he looks to add strength in depth to his squad.

The 23-year-old certainly fits that bill and Liverpool have already made tentative enquiries about his availability.

They will only follow up their initial interest if Valencia are realistic about their valuation of a player who has won 21 caps for Spain.

Reports in Spain suggest the La Liga outfit are holding out for a fee in the region of £25m for Silva and with Barcelona and Juventus also both believed to be interested in snapping him up the battle for his services could be hard fought.

Liverpool are unlikely to be willing to pay that kind of asking price but Benitez will move fast it a compromise deal can be struck.

Reds chief scout Eduardo Macia – who took Silva to Valencia when the attacking midfielder was a teenager – was recently dispatched to Spain to check on Silva’s availability and was not discouraged by what he learned.

now if Rafa can pull this off i would be over the moon ,and when TONY BARRET writes about it ,there's normally something in the story as he
doesnt write about crap

True:)
If it's in the Echo it's as good as hearing it straight from rafa's mouth.

Wehere will he play though? Left wing?

One thing about Silva and Villa though, they have always said that they don't want to leave Spain, so that could be a problem.

I was going to answer with a long intricate post, but it hardly seems worth the effort...

Looks like it's not going to happen. I expect the other big clubs with more money to snatch him away.

Benitez has refused to meet Valencia's £30m valuation of Silva
James Ducker and Ben Smith

Rafael Benitez has temporarily called off his pursuit of David Silva, the Spain international, after baulking at Valencia's asking-price. Sources close to the club insist that despite the Liverpool manager withdrawing from negotiations he remains keen to sign the player but is unwilling to pay over the odds.

Benitez had made it clear that he would walk away from the proposed deal if Valencia demanded an unrealistic price, but it was thought he was prepared to exceed the club-record £20.2 million he paid Atlético Madrid for Fernando Torres, the Spain striker, in July 2007 in order to snare Silva. The Spanish club had asked for a combined fee of about £130 million for Silva and Villa when Manchester City inquired about their availability in January.

Should Valencia lower their £30m valuation for Silva it is thought Benitez would be prepared to reignite his interest. With debts that stood at £462 million last November, it is possible they will be forced to return to the negotiating table where Benítez will hope to take advantage of his former club’s parlous financial state.

Under the terms of his new contract, Benítez has been granted the power to begin transfer negotiations and by moving swiftly for Silva he had hoped to wrap up a deal relatively quickly, rather than allow the situation to drag on throughout the summer.

Eduardo Maciá, the Liverpool chief scout, who brought Silva to Valencia when he was a teenager, was recently sent to Spain to ask about his availability and is thought to have been encouraged by what he was told, even though Liverpool would probably face competition from Real Madrid and Barcelona for the 23-year-old.

The prospect of a move to Anfield would certainly appeal to Silva, not least because of the strong Spanish contingent at the club, from Benítez, Maciá and others on the management staff, to Torres, Xabi Alonso, José Manuel Reina, Albert Riera and Álvaro Arbeloa, his Spain team-mates with whom he won the European Championship last summer, on the playing side.

Silva would certainly be a welcome addition. He operated in an advanced left-sided position for Spain, in support of Torres and Villa, during the European Championship but can play on either wing or directly behind a lone striker, a versatility that appeals greatly to Benítez.

Benítez will have no hesitation looking elsewhere, however, if Valencia are overambitious in their demands, with Aaron Lennon, the Tottenham Hotspur winger, Antonio Valencia, of Wigan Athletic, and Arjen Robben, the Real winger, cheaper alternatives.

They hve no money. Can't even pay their players so surely they're going to have to sell sooner rather than later

the problem isnt selling ,its the price they want for him ,they quoted Liverpool 30m for him and quite frankly thats insane ,Torres cost us 20m now why would we pay 30m for him ,i would pay that for Villa anyday :D

Torres cost 26 million didn't he?
30 million for Silva is a joke. Let Chelsea, United or City buy him for that price. They seem to enjoy paying a lot for their players

no dude torres cost us a measily 20.3 million ,the media inflated the price to 26m :D

The transfer fee is the highest paid in Liverpool's history,[17] and in March 2008, manager Rafael Benítez confirmed to The Times that Torres was acquired for around £20 million
