I've been thinking of upgrading to a 4meg line (still researching which ISP to go with).
But will it be worth it 4 my requirements?
If i could split my usage it would be: 85% - torrent downloads
15% - browsing & random (youtube etc)

Im currently using 384kbps line.
My main goal is to have improved download speeds on torrents (all other factors held constant), coz browsing on current line is perfect.

Unlimted International, fine. Otherwise, you will burn those GB quickly! I prefer a slower line, with more GBs- you can get ~100Gb a month on 384... Browsing has to be seperate though, but I do that at work. Cellphone used when required @home. But I'm a bit of a miser...

WELCOME!

When I moved to Port Alfred, Telkom stuffed up the transfer, and reverted me from 4MB/s to 384kbps. I couldn't stand it. It was just horrible. I felt depressed and suicidal. Luckily they fixed it pronto.

I'm more than happy to pay extra for the good dope.

When downloading content like video/games etc, I prefer to have it sooner rather than later. The fact of the matter is that I know how much transfer limit I have for the month. I know what I want to download and how much of the limit it will take up. I see no point in trying to trick myself to think that the longer it takes to pull I somehow have extra to use.

So if you can afford the extra amount, I say go for it.

An upgrade to 4Mb is definitely worth it. I had 4Mb ADSL before switching to Neotel. The only problem is once you upgrade, you'll never be happy with anything slower. I still have 384kbps ADSL and compared to what I've become accustomed to, it's damn slow.

Everything, including torrents, is ff'ing fast on a 4Mb line. Upgrade and enjoy :)

The problem is with a faster line your cap dissapears faster. So not only is the 4mb line going to cost you more, you will need to but extra bandwidth too.

I've been thinking about it for a while - still not convinced I'll stick with my 384. Going to wait for telkom to bumb the 384's up to 1mb :D

from 384k to my 4meg it was definitely a good move, especially if you share the line.

That was my main reason for upgrading. When both our PC's were being used for internet at the same time, the 384kbps connection was taking serious strain. Especially if I was on youtube while my significant other was uploading pics to Facebook. With a 4Mb line, we could both do whatever we wanted without affecting other users.

Yeah if they could bump up 384k to 1MB, I'd be a happy camper indeed, but alas the chances of that happening soon is highly unlikely.

In my book, future upgrades should be the following:

384k -> 1MB
512k -> 2MB
4MB -> 8MB

its sad to see that we still think that 4mb/s is 'fast'

get uncapped express with a 384 account....R999 - (should be R199), from 8am to 7pm you will be throttled but after those hours you will be on 4mb/s and depending on your source your files should max out at 400/s+
tried and tested:)

Thanx for all the comments and thnx for the welcome.:)

It seems that most people are happy (or should I say happier) with their 4meg lines than their 'old' 384 lines.
And i must say it seems very tempting.:)

My main reason for wanting an upgrdade is coz I recently moved and am now residing in an area where they're still busy installing dsl lines so it might be a while before I can have a new Telkom line installed. and thus an upgrade seemed the logical choice.
Is it thus worth looking @ a wireless sollution (neotel??) or is Telkom the bees knees in terms of support etc.:confused:

I've currently got a 2gig international and 28 gig local account and as stated i know exactly which series I downlaod weekly so I have an indication of how much i'll be downloading.
My average is approcimately 25gig (upload & download), and that's when i download any crappy movie released not just the ones I wanna see.:D

So i think the buying of extra bandwidth shouldn't be a major factor for me.
All in all I'm definitely convinced to go the 4meg line route, BUT....who has the best service (not just price) on the market currently.
I'm looking at TCO (installation costs, monthly fees, backup support etc.)

Will the new Seacom cable decrease the prices of bandwidth?

I will definitely upgrade to 4mb, if the intl. cap prices decrease.
R70 per gb is a bit heavy....
