I have a CellC contract and would like to be able to have the kind of mobile internet speeds you all bragg about.
Does Vodacom maby sell some kind of Pay as You go sim card that I can pop into my phone whenever I need fast speeds.
In other words, I want to keep my exisitng CellC contract, but if I am away from home and want to connect to the internet I can just put the Vodacom sim card in my 3G enabled phone and only pay for the amount of data I use.
I alway see the CellC sim card for sale at till points in the shops for like R1-99 each. I was just wondering if Vodacom had something like that.

dude, it seems like you have never heard of vodacom.... of course they have sims cards!
oh, and I think you need to know this then:
1) You should convert airtime into "data bundles" first - it's cheaper.
2) Dial *111# to get to that menu.
3) Have fun on the fast Network.

Maybe what the dude wants to know if there maybe special sims cards for HDSPA..and like they said 32k / 64k all have the same data speeds when put to the test on pre-paid service.

Sorry, I probably explain like my @ss.
Let me try put it another way.
I would like to buy a Pay as You go sim card at the shop for normal phoning around. Only I'm not gonna use it to phone around, as I already have a bussiness CellC contract.
I do however want to be able to swop the sim cards around if I need to use my phone as a modem for my laptop.
hope this helps

Hi
It's the same SIM card as you would use for calling. The only difference is that you put credit on it and then buy a data bundle to get the best rate per Megabyte of download.

Once you have bought and activated the (R2) SIM, go to www.vodacom4me.co.za and register. That way you can easily convert airtime to databundles.
And it's instantaneous! :cool:

You only have to do that initially. After that you can buy normal data bundles.

I have just received a new USB modem which I use on my notebook every day. I still have my older usb modem (E220) and would like to use it permanantly on my wife's mac at home. She uses very little bandwidth and I do not want to sign up for a 2 year contract with vodacom.
My question:
I assume that the best way to do this is to get a new sim card associated to a pay-as-you-go account. Does one get a simple pay-as-you-go for 3G only?
What is it called? What does it cost per MB?
Thanks

Hi there.
All you need to do is buy a normal pay as you go sim card. Then load airtime like you normally would onto that number. Once your airtime is loaded, with Vodcom you register on vodacome4me website and then convert your airtime to data bundle. Not sure about MTN, but I think you can dial 155 with that pay as you go sim card in a phone and select the data option you want.
Check MTN and Vodacom sites for various data pricing, obvioulsy the bigger the bundle the "cheaper" it gets.
Cheers

How do you load airtime with the usb modem (without a keyboard)?

Does the bandwidth expire at the end of the month?

Well, in my case, i log into ABSA -> Buy Prepaid -> Type Number of SIM + Amount -> voila sim is charged. You obviously need internet to do this though, but it can be -ANY- internet [i.e. from work or another 3g contract] . The SIM you're charging does not need to be "online" or in any device if you charge this way.
I'm sure all banks have these facilities [or should have] , and i think there's a few non-banking companies too [easypay.co.za methinks] .
Otherwise you'll have to put the sim in a phone and charge the normal voucher way.
I usually load enough airtime to cover a the bundle i want to buy [don't forget to convert airtime to a bundle] + going out of bundle a little. This way, i can load more airtime when i get the SMS saying "Only 4MB left of bundle" using the same internet connection.

Not 100% sure, but my brother uses MTN and he says that he can only purchase one data bundle per month. Just make sure of your facts, and all the pro's and cons, before you buy a bundle. I recommend going to a Vodashop and an MTN shop to confirm all the details.

Does the bandwidth expire at the end of the month?Only if you buy the bundle at the end of the previous month.
If you buy it on the 1st, then it will carry over until the end of the following month (60 days max)

The bigger the Bundle you buy, the better value for money you get. We have also added a new feature which allows you to load as many bundles as you need during a month. http://www.mtn.co.za/MTNServices/broadband/mtnbroadband/Pages/options.aspx

Using MTN , I purchase "airtime" through FNB online banking the message is sent to the sim . I then use the USSD application to convert the "airtime" to "data" . Doing it this way you dont even need to take the sim out of the E220 modem .
Bearing in mind this works on MTN only , with Vodacom you can log onto Vodacom4me and convert "airtime" to "data" that way .

You can also convert airtime to data bundles on Vodacom's USSD system on *111#. I find it a lot quicker than vodacom4me.

Not to mention, Vodacom4me actually uses bandwidth, which is quite a pain if you're on your last few kilobytes. *111# is "free" in that sense...

Ok, these guys are making it sound so complicated. Its actually quite easy on pre-paid. Initially buy airtime for the simm. Place the simm in your phone and activate as usual assuming you've done so already. Convert the airtime to a data bundle and you done. (this only has to be done once) Now put the simm in your modem and you ready to go. From now on, just buy data bundles as per norm. Simple!
500MB = R189
1GB = R289
2GB = R389 etc etc
