Here are the speed test results for any of you who want to see how "fast" 3G is: http://www.tcpiq.com/tcpIQ/LineSpeed/Results/TestStats/?CountryId=196&UserId=148771

Download speed
82.04 KBits/sec
10.26 KBytes/sec
Not much faster than a 56k dial-up from Telkom I see.
While this information is interresting, it does not tell you much unless you know how they did the test.
A quick glance at the site did not tell me this - I might have missed it - but it's probably a download test directly from their own site. How many users are using their servers for download tests, what's their own bandwidth capabilities, etc. Lots of factors could affect the results.
You often see a specific site very slow and then another one flying. I've seen anything from 0Kb/s to over 500Kb/s (when compression was still on)
What I would like to see is a proper hop-by-hop throughput AND latency set of results, including:
Mobile to APN - This will give the real speed of the radio network.
Mobile to Peering Point - Vodacom's local connection
Mobile to various national sites - Local test
Mobile to various international sites - The final test

While this information is interresting, it does not tell you much unless you know how they did the test.
This is the same test as RPM and Beyers used for the Broadband report.
It does test the speeds to a number of different sites.
In my experience hop times and ping times are important, but often do not reflect the reality of download/upload speeds experienced by users browsing the web.
In my experience hop times and ping times are important, but often do not reflect the reality of download/upload speeds experienced by users browsing the web.
You're quite right, latency tests is only part of the test and is relevant to interactive applications such as Telnet, chat, etc.
Throughput is much less interactive at packet level due to the sliding window in TCP and therefore is relevant to downloads. FTP is a great test for throughput.
All applications, without exception, are affected by both, thus you should measure both. And by doing it for the major points along the path, you can get a good idea on how the end-to-end path is performing.
The stats Harley79 posted makes interresting reading. Looks like Vodacom does not host their own servers.
We need a server on the APN (i.e. before the Internet link) to test the radio network.

rabbiddog, Today shows some improvement in download for me, but where did you get that upload speed from?
vodacom3g? why my upload speed low in comparison to raabiddog, yet my download faster? (not that I am complaining about my download speed, please dont change that!)

well it runs much faster than my 65K ISDN dialup.
I just got 3G today, I'm not even getting 1kbps on average :-( :-(
And it keeps disconnecting.....

Whats your signal like? Did they give you an antenna? Are you running anti virus/firewall?
Divv, I am sure that vodacom3g will want to know which area you are in, and assuming that you have a 3G data card did you receive an external antenna. You might want to send a p.m. to vodacom3g with this info.
have already pm'ed him... its so difficult to connect its taken me 1/2 hour to read your response :-(

Why are my upload seeds so much greater than my download speeds?
vodacom3g

rabbiddog,
Which test are you running? tcpiq?
What numbers did you get? The ones below? (from your link)
Upload speed
396.88 KBits/sec 49.61 KBytes/sec
196.36 KBits/sec 24.55 KBytes/sec
Download speed
123.75 KBits/sec 15.47 KBytes/sec
141.58 KBits/sec 17.70 KBytes/sec
If so, can I please have your data card :)
These numbers can't be real. Upload speed is 64Kb/s. It's a radio limit. Anything above this number is some software doing something along the way, fooling the test program, a proxy, caching server, etc. But these will usually affect downloads more than uploads.
I'm a bit baffled, anyone else seeing this?
I've just ran tcpiq and watched it with a sniffer.
My tcpiq results:
DL: 121Kb/s
UL: 41Kb/s
It seems to upload and download in bursts, with 0Kb/s activity happening for quite a while, then suddenly a burst of throughput (uploading at 64Kb/s). It appears to take the average of all this activity.
Doing FTP's might show slowed throughputs but the download or upload never stops completely for a long time.
I just tested with FTP and got ~300K from smtp and ~150-200K, internationally.
Anyone know the tcpiq testing methodology?

Now that the testing is complete:

Upload speed 313.06 KBits/sec
39.13 KBytes/sec

Hi,
Once again, the upload speeds don't make sense. Something in your test setup is fooling the test.
313Kb/s is 5 times faster than the maximum link speed.
Any idea if you're running any in-line software, proxy, etc?
If you think you're getting unrealistic numbers, nothing beats uploading / downloading a known file size and measure time taken with a stopwatch. But if something is caching the test files, you'll still get the wrong numbers.
Rabbiddog, I'd love to get behind these numbers. Any feedback would be helpful.

Maybe you plugged your data card in upside down and are therefore getting faster uploads than downloads?
What's worrisome here is that these tests are used to make comparisons. If they provide obviously wrong results, you can still discard the results.
What if they're out by 10-20% or even 50%. Would we know?

When I look at the overall 3g stats:
http://www.tcpiq.com/tcpIQ/LineSpeed/Results/CountryConnectionStats/?CountryId=196&ConnectionId=11653
mine shows way above this. Also while browsing and downloading the download runs at 17 + KBytes/sec (and this is mostly constant) i.e. average speed for 1 hour.

ROFL! Service and a sense of humour - MTN's offering had better be pretty special or I'm jumping ship after 10 years just to acknowledge a company that finally takes its service seriously.

Having lurked around the ADSL forums for a while, this is the only one where I can sense some sort of effort at delivering service from the SP. I also detect less moaning and groaning here. Can it be that the 3G users are actually reasonably satisfied with what they got? It's almost unbelievable.
I am also considering jumping the Telkom ISDN ship, hence my lurking here on myADSL. I have a question, err, make that 2:
1) What speed can we reasonably expect from 3G? Faster than ISDN 64kb/s ? Much faster?
2) Maybe a silly one, but why do I need a 3G phone if it's my PC that I want to connect?

1) 3G connects at 384kbps and there is various posts regarding speeds. I do find it faster then ISDN
2) There is PCMCIA adapters available for PC if you want to go the PC Card route or else you do need a 3G phone.
We moan and complain but v3g works hard to make us happy and has been impressive regarding feedback etc.
