Hi! I am very new to Linux, but after a lot of Googling I finally got the Vodafone Mobile Connect Card driver for Linux software running in Ubuntu 8.04. It detects my data card successfully, authenticates it perfectly, and everything seems fine. However, whenever I click on the "Connect" button, nothing happens. I can't find anything at the software developer's site or Ubuntu's site. I hope someone here can help?
Oh yes, please bear in mind that I'm new to Linux... :confused:

With 8.04 your issue is regarding the PIN authorization. Either create a little script to add the PIN manually or put the SIM card into a phone and remove the PIN.

Thank you very much, Peon; I just tried it, I disabled the pin request, but it's still doing the same thing. When I click on the "Connect" button, it stays highlighted (as if it's connected) but it doesn't even try to establish a connection.
Some more information, if that helps:
I'm running Ubuntu 8.04, with Vodafone Mobile Connect Card driver 2.00 Beta, using a Novatell U740 card with a Vodacom Prepaid sim card.
Any ideas, anyone? Please?
Remove all that beta vodafone kek. Ubuntu default as is will work. Are you using Gnome or KDE?

Using GNOME. Could you please explain how I can get it to work with Ubuntu as is? Because I have absolutely no idea...
Once the proprietory vodafone software is gone, the network manager should automaticlly detect a 3G device is plugged in. Then it will ask you to setup an profile. That being Soth Africa -> Vodacom.
Are you using a USB Dongle or a PCMCIA adaptor?

All right, I'm lost again. I tried to uninstall the vodafone beta software; the "Add / Remove" doesn't list it; I Googled and found some commands, like "sudo apt-get remove vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux", and "dpkg -l vodafone #" (which didn't find any matches). No luck removing it.
Also, where do I find the network manager?
The Network Manager or NM, is alot similar to XP, in that those 2 little computer screens on task bar.
Or goto system -> Preferences -> Network Connections -> Mobile Broadband.
It must be said though that be installing 9.04 would not be a bad idea. Then you rid of the vodafone software, better 3g support and its current.

Just upgrade to 9.04 - never have a problem with getting my 3G to work, or my wifi either. Its just a better Ubuntu.

Thanks guys; I already requested a 9.04 CD, will hopefully have it soon. (I just can't get myself to download 700MB...)

Yup i would also recommend upgrading to 9.04, 3G worked out of the box for me, only had to select my SP, ie Vodacom.
In 8.04 you have to setup some init. strings and so on... it is really a lot of effort...

Yip, PC Card Express... why? Does it make a difference where Linux is concerned?
No difference. PCI Express in PCMCIA slots is the same except its not a perfect rectange shape.

Yeah always avoid the vodafone *$%*# software, even the OSX version is buggy... best to use the default Linux support when you eventually upgrade to 9.0.4The NM applet in 9.04 does not allow sending & receiving of SMSes and seems to think my E272 is an Option modem - or at least it doesn't have any Huawei specific driver modules.
