Anyone know when this phone is due out?

I need a new contract, but don't want the E1000.

What about the SE Z1010, if you're looking for 3G?

Is that a flip phone ? I don't like flip phones.

PCW -

I've been trying to get a more accurate than 'soon' date for you.

Here's the issue with the Nokia 6630:

All 3G video phones must conform to the VodafoneLive! spec and this includes (for obvious reasons) the ability to make a video call.

The 6630 needs an external device (cradle) to make video calls, so you'll be able to make a video call but only when you're at your desk. A bit weird, I know, but Nokia's been very weird lately with the form factors.

What the general feedback on this? Is this a show stopper?

Yes, the Z1010 is a flip phone, but SE must have had a reason for it. They've only released 3 clamshells thus far.

Looking at www.threeg.co.za the Nokia seemed the best on offer, particularly as I dislike clamshell phones. I've never been a Motorola fan but it has good reviews, so maybe I should just go for that. I need a new contract and don't want to wait too long to sort it out.

I did not know about the cradle issue. That puts me off the Nokia straight away. I agree with what you say RE Nokia - some of the phones they have introduced recently are utterly bizarre.

And totally unstable like other wireless solutions on this forum :-)

I hate my Nokia and will never buy one again. I wish a rep from RF Design was on this forum and read this message. Only EVER had nokia before, but will NEVER again. Nokia 6600 is a load of complete crap. Problem after problem. Had 5 software upgrades in less than a year and each one "will definatelly sort your problem out sir", yet it doesn't. Basic thing like getting a "beep" when I get an SMS. How difficult is that?

6630 can still make video calls, the other person just sees whatever your camera is pointed at. can't make face to face calls, tho' a mirror should solve the problem... :D

Would love to know when it'll be available, I'm upgrading as well and the symbian software is defs 1 up on the moto.

I want the 6630 - cradle or no cradle. I won't be making any video calls, so that doesn't worry me. Just please release the phone! :) My upgrade is in 8 days time.

Question - Do you happen to have any SMS that you just CANNOT delete? I had this once, and experienced the "No Beep" when receiving.

How to fix it - 1st make a backup of your contacts, settings etc
Then - perform the microsoft salute

Switch off the phone.

Hold down the following three buttons: Green (call answer) button, * button, and '3' button

While holding these buttons, press the power button and switch on the phone (This takes extreme finger flexibility)

When the message 'Formatting' appears on the screen, release all of the buttons

Note that you shouldn't switch the phone off or remove the battery when performing either of these operations, and it's advised that the handset has a reasonable amount of battery charge before performing a format/reset.

Then restore your contacts etc.

This worked for me, it takes quite a while to do though.

Before doing this I would recommend confirming where the fault lies, IE is it the OS/Phone or a 3rd party application. Boot your phone into safe mode and check if the problems persist, if they do they you most likely have a phone/OS problem. If not it could be caused by a 3rd party application

To boot your phone in safe mode hold the edit key (pencil) when turning it on.

Also if it is the mystery sms problem mentioned above you may be able to delete it while in safe mode.

Wish I had known about safe mode before now, might have saved me some grief.
I wonder why Nokia do not tell you about these things in the manual?
Thanks.

Yeah tell me about it, that key saved my life more times than I would like to admit. I have a habit of destroying my phone and turning it into a crash box similar to windows 95. ;)

Yes, I have exact problem re: unable to delete sms's

Now that I give this some thought, it could be the reason why my 6820's message memory is constantly full - despite having deleted a bunch of smsz.

Well with input from this forum I downloaded latest bluetooth stuff and got my pc quite working ... FINALLY! So I did a sync, formatted my entire phone and memory card and then re-installed my contacts. I am now back online and problems seem to be gone.

Thanks

Back on topic - I was informed today by someone at one of the Vodashops that the Nokia 6630 won't be released this year. Vodacom3G, is this true? The guy did tell me that Motorola will be releasing another 3G phone soon, as well as Sony Ericsson. Would it be possible to give us a list of soon to be released 3G phones? And if possible an estimated time of release. I'd like to do a bit of research on features, etc. Thanks :)

There is no ETA on this phone. Don't hold your breath. I waited many, many months for the 6630 and finally gave up and settled for another non 3G phone. Sad but true.

There's still a lot of uncertainty around the 6630 and at this point it looks like the Nokia 6680 is going to beat it out the door.

I went for the 6670. It's an excellent smartphone. It had all the features I was looking for, except 3G. I did endless research on cells and I'm extremely happy with my choice. I was in the same position as you - my upgrade was due and I really didn't have any choices when it came to 3G phones. I don't think the Motorola E1000 is much of a choice, so I decided to settle for a non 3G phone.

If you particularly want a 3G phone then I suggest you wait until the 6680 is released. Keep bugging Vodacom3G to see if he can get an ETA for you. Otherwise, I strongly recommend the 6670.

Thanks for the info.

I went on the Nokia website and looked at the Nokia 6680, it is basicaly the Nokia 6630 with a Video Camera on the front and a 18-Bit color screen, much better than the Nokia 6630.

I think i'll wait for the Nokia 6680, my contract expires in May so hopefully it will be available by that time.

Do you have a more precise ETA on the Nokia 6680? Will this phone be available from Autopage Cellular for upgrade option on a Vodacom package?

Just a reminder:

You don't need to upgrade the moment your contract expires. At the end of your 24 month contract it switches to a monthly contract.

So, if a desirable phone is near, rather wait a month or two. Don't let the SP's bully you into upgrading.

So when it switches so a monthly contract i can cancel it at any time, there is no long wait to have a monthly contract canceled? That is if i want to switch Service Providers...

Hey V3G - I see that Vodafone have approved the 6630, and seem to recall that you guys follow on their certifications for VLive branded phones. This mean that we can expect 6630 handsets soon on Vodacom? I was speaking to a mate of mine in London earlier who has the 6680, and he was complaining bitterly about it. Says its much slower than his 6630? and that the battery life isnt particularly good either. Ran a search on google, and a LOT of people share his opinion on 6630 vs 6680. I just hope nokia dont have a dud with the 6680....

I c that the 6630 has USB2 support which means that it can transmit 480Mbps.

Reason I am saying this is course I want to know whether I should buy the data card or the 6630 phone.

What is the advantages and disadvantages of using the phone in place of the card.

vodacom3g
29-04-2005, 07:18 AM
It all depends on your usage pattern.

If you do very little data stuff, a phone would be more suited as you would not need to pay for a data card, either outright or as part of a contract.

On the other end of the scale, if you do a lot of data, all the time, a data card is the most logical solution as it frees your phone up for voice applications and removes the hassle of making the modem connection.

The break-over point is somewhere in between and probably varies from person to person. I'd say anything over 100 Mb per month would warrant a data card, although I'm sure forumites do much more with their phones.

V3g,

I have a friend that has a Data Card already. We tested with my SIM and it works on the Vodacom network and he wants to get a Data Contract but doesn't want a card but rather a phone instead. How or where can I find out if this is possible since he doesn't need voice and wants to use the phone on prepaid since he uses data more ?

Thanks

Hi Tahir
A couple of things re your post :
1. The 6630 does have a camera for video calls - its an external jack that you plug the phone into when required.
2. The 6630 is available in the UK on VLive. It isnt available here on Vodacom because of some firmware issues with the phone on Vodacoms network (it hogs the 1800Mhz band when roaming on GSM for one). These issues have been addressed with a firmware upgrade, and you can in fact get support for this phone whilst using the Vodacom network now (I have a 6630 and got plenty of support from Vodacom when originally hooking up to their 3G network for testing purposes).
3. The 6680 will be launched round about the same time on MTN. Vodacom will not have a competitive advantage to market with this handset as you have implied.
4. All of this is a mute point because the phone is available on MTN and this is an MTN forum. Vodacom's compatability is irrelevant.
4. This is not the correct forum for posting contract pricing for Vodacom - please keep those sort of posts to the Vodacom forum where they will be more useful.

Cheers -

The nokia 6630 has not been approved by Vodacom because it does not have A BUILT IN 3G video camera.Like a mention before the 6680 will be availabe in May from Vodacom. There are so many phones Vodafone has and Vodacom will not launch them because they dont meet Vodacom requirements..............Vodacom will have an advantage on 3g because they have a 6/8 months lead for coverage......Look like some one is the weakest link fror launching 3G late.
