OK fellow forumites, if I sound like a software/movie pirate or offend anyone I apologise in advance.:o

I just rented Valkyrie, but cannot watch it tonight. I want to make an iso to watch it later in the week. Nero refuses to copy the disc, says it cannot read it.

Is there anything else I can use, or should I just give it up and sacrifice another few rental credits when I have time to watch the film?

dvdecrypter shouldn't have an issue.

Does it work in W7?

DVDShrink works according to this http://news.softpedia.com/news/5-Old-Scool-Apps-Running-on-Windows-7-Part-III-107160.shtml

As far as I know DVDdecrypter also works.

The download is really small (1MB) for DVDShrink, try it.

DVDdecrypter will get rid of any copyright protection, then mount the .iso and dvdshrink will make it fit lm a 4.7GB DISC :D

DVDdecrypter is a winner for sure, can watch the ripped .vob's straight from win media player later on... but remember to delete the files after!!

Thanks to all. DVDDecrypter seems to have done the trick. I have made an ISO and mounted the ISO using Daemon Tools, can now watch the film in my own time!

(Wonders if this is what those street hawkers at East Rand Mall uses....)

How to back up Your DVDs and rip your DVD collection to your Hard Drive!

1) Remove Region Protection...
Install this program first... it will remove the copy protection and macrovision while you decrypt... (and will also allow you to watch region protected discs in the future)...
http://www.dvd43.com/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD43

2) To make a backup of a DVD to another DVD...
DVD Decrypter can rip the DVD to your hard drive or make an ISO image...
http://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/
(Note: DVD Decrypter removes the CSS encryption on the DVD)
If DVDDecrypter has problems with a newer DVD install DVD43 (above).
If you have ripped the DVD files to your hard drive, you can then use DVD shrink to make the image smaller and turn it into an ISO file that I can fit onto one DVD... Note: you have to select ISO image as the target file from the drop down menu.
http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/
Once you have the ISO image you can use this program to burn it back to a DVD...
http://www.imgburn.com/

3) To Rip a DVD to an AVI or DivX (XviD) file...
The free version of this program Fair Use Wizard can rip any DVD to a 700 Mb AVI (XVid) File... with just one click...
http://www.fairusewizard.com/
but.... I find I get a much better quality rip, when I follow these steps...
i) Use DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD to your Hard Drive.
ii) Use DVD Shrink to make an ISO image of the DVD, but turn the compression off completely, in other words, the ISO image will be an exact image of the DVD. Also enable the two extra read options in DVD Shrink to get a better quality image, it is slower, but it pays off. Put that image on a different drive to the one you are going to rip to.
iii) Now use Fair Use Wizard to rip from that unencrypted image in your hard disk. You will get a very high quality rip with no artifacts and no "streaking".
Compare that to a rip straight from the DVD and you will see what I mean. Of course the quality of your DVD drive and speed of your processor is also a factor. 3.0 Ghz strongly recommended!

Doubt whether the street hawkers rip from DVD. They normally convert the CAMS of the latest movies and sell these to unsuspecting suckers as the "real deal"!!

If it is a DVD rip, they will still have to shrink the ISO to fit onto a 4,7Gb dvd as the 8,5Gb discs are too expensive for them!

depends at what stage of the process you buy. i know for instance that you could get pretty good quality DVDs from Bruma back in the day. Have no idea what the situation is like these days. But if the operators are still at Bruma, then I am guessing they definitely do this with games.

No, the hawkers sell factory made disks from China. Even home burned pirate DVDs come from Asia sourced ISOs. I think the pirates have their own apps or rip the movies from hacked DVD/Bluray machines.

Pirates - I don't know about local ones, but at least those in the Middle East - sell dual layer disks too - factory pressed. Most stuff is factory pressed.

I wouldn't know too much about it; have yet to buy from them!

By definition would they be classified as counterfeiters?

Yes.

My point was that Pirates don't use these DVD-rippers the industry wants to get rid of. They can make exact copies of DVDs if they would want - even dual layer ones. They have whole factories and networks.

On the other hand DVD rippers are tools consumers can use to transfer their legally bought DVDs to HDDs or portable media players ie FORMAT-SHIFT. That's fair use. It's also a method of backing up your information in case your DVD is stolen, damaged or degrades.

Load AnyDvD to take care of the copy protection on the disc, then use Alcohol120 to make the image.
