Madonna is the world's highest-earning musician.

The '4 Minutes' singer topped a poll by America's Forbes magazine after making £73 million in the past year, mainly thanks to her sold-out 'Sticky and Sweet' world tour and lucrative endorsement deals.

Celine Dion came second after earning £66 million in the first year since returning to the road following her three-year residency in Las Vegas.

Beyonce Knowles made £58 million in the past 12 months, coming third in the poll, after releasing an album, starring in two films and embarking on a 110-date world tour.

Other musicians in the poll include Coldplay and Bruce Springsteen, who is in the middle of a world tour which will see him headline at the world famous Glastonbury music festival on Saturday (27.06.09) and play at London's Hyde Park on Sunday (28.06.09).

In order to compile the list of the year's top earning musicians, the magazine considers money made from album sales, touring, publishing and endorsement deals from June 2008 and June 2009.

Forbes magazine's top 10 highest-earning musicians:

1 - Madonna - £73 million
2 - Celine Dion - £66 million

Sure. Intel's earnings for 2005 were $12.1bn. How can anyone complain about a few kids stealing their CPUs?

Country has a big following so it's not really surprising that country singers feature in the list.

It would be the same if SA compiled a list of top selling artists. Kwaito would feature heavily i'm sure.

I agree with CandyX. There are some amazing country songs. You can't pigeon hole the whole genre as being crap.

Country music tells a story and it's really emotive. The lyrics are quite something if you take the time to listen and get past the southern slur :p

Her genre of music is terrible, she is another story...

So because you don't appreciate her genre of music she is considered a crap or terrible singer? Surely you have to seperate the artist from the music when evaluating good and bad?

So if you don't like the music you can't appreciate the artist for their talent? That's bulldust.

I'm a music producer and I produce niche genres of music. I don't expect respect in any way from anyone who doesn't appreciate my music - in fact it means very little to me if they do...

Certainly. Quite clearly there are hordes of country and western fans and they are perfectly entitled to describe it using any number of positive adjectives. As am I entitled to call it crap. same goes for my own productions.

But serqet, I stated that country and western is crap. I wasn't having a dig at the artists - good for them for exploiting the uneducated ears of so many hillbillies...:D :p

Interestingly enough, Picard, the country singer Kenny Chesney was married to the actress Renee Zellweger.

Maybe that will ring a bell for you?

I don't rate Renee Zellweger as that great am actress. A good actress but not greater than many of the mayriad of actresses that gets spewed out by the Hollywood sausage machine.

I never said she is a terrible singer, I said the genre that she sings is rubbish.
I wont put my ears through the trauma of listening to that stuff though, so even if she is an amazing singer, she is wasting her talent on some hillbilly anthems
