What is the difference between HomeDSL and BusinessDSL anyWHO?

mancombseepgood
01-03-2005, 01:27 PM
Just kidding - no difference, actually, I guess Telkom just feel sorry for the home user having to cough up all that vat, so they charge less for the same service... In reality though it's around the cost of a pizza less pm...

p.s. does anyone know how much Telkom paid for the infrastructure that was originally paid for by apartheid taxes when they were `privatised'? I'd be interested to know in light of all the profit bragging they have done recently...

What is the difference between HomeDSL and BusinessDSL anyWHO?

HomeDSL = 2 users
BusinessDSL = 4 users

Thats it ?
No extra data incentive; no speed incentive ? Just limited simultanous accounts ?

So if I was a business owener I would apply for HomeDSL, get a proxy + firewall and I have the same facilities as BusinessDSL ?

Hi Lourens... I'm not sure that I follow.... 2 users/4 users?
The business / home part relates to the line rental, not the TelkomSA service. Where does the no of users come into it?

Clipse

true.. the business ADSL ISP packages do have differences regarding to price and performance.

Business accounts = higher priority during day and lower at night
Normal accounts = low priority during day and higher at night

Atleast this is the way its suppose to be run

I got this info from the guy at the Computer Faire at the Sandton Convention last year.

He explained everything to me costing and the works and on that information I then applied for the Business package for a total cost of R 1050.00 per month.

Then after everything, they still screwed up the application – I got the Home package and had to find my own ISP but they at least remembered to bring a modem.

We are talking about Telkom so there is naturally a speed incentive but just not for you - you reach the cap faster so that you can get another ISP account to line the Telkom coffers!

The only benefit is that they will respond faster to you call if you’re a business and they will even put a home user aside to assist you, again to ensure that your business reach the cap faster.

I will check on the Telkom site to see if there are new changes to the packages.

Yeah - I agree, faster service for business...
but somehow i can't believe that a home user will settle for slower than business service... I mean people who live in homes have brains, right? :-)
I have in the past had shocking experiences with Telkom - on behalf of clients... I have been on hold for around 30+ minutes.... I also had an employee at Telkom Pretoria who couldn't tell me their street address (I wanted to send the client directly to them as no-one seems to take any responsibility over the phone). He said that he doesn't know the street address... when I asked him how he got to work, he said `by taxi'!

I must tell you that it is a pleasure to deal with the guys and gals from the old Germiston or new Alberton walk in centre and this also include the technical guys in the Wadeville area.

I never had a problem with these people and it’s actually kind of a weird experience to deal with competent people that work for Telkom.

The only way to deal with Telkom is to find out who does what and deal with individuals... 0800 and 086 numbers just dont work....
I once needed to phone a guy up in the local sales office here in East London. Number not listed in the book...?!
So I phoned 1023 and asked them for the local sales office number. They said they don't have it - I have to phone the 0800 number! I explained that I needed to speak to the actual person that I had filled out a particular form with, but they said sorry - Telkom office numbers are unlisted. I asked how they communicate if they don't have each others numbers... she said `we don't phone each other'!!!
... probably costs too much
Maybe they're not listed cause they get so many complaints...

I just ordered my DSL192 and the guy in the call center was very sharp. He's probably the second person I've spoken to at Telkom thats really clued up. I remember talking to the guy I order my ISDN from a few years back and the whole time I was talking to him I was thinking 'This is so amazing, this guy actually knows what he's talking about'. It was one of those rare experiences that you kind of always remember :)

I think there are good people working for Telkom but they probably don't stick around too long before moving on to better things. Also the best call center people are normally in sales where they can make lotsa sales obviously. No point wasting them on technical support...

It all boils down to individuals... you get that sometimes... sometimes i just phone up telkom to see what kind of person i'm going to get...
Sometimes I phone directory enquiries to ask for the time.... they love it... I usually get told to phone 1026, thats when I ask them how come Telkom employees can't tell the time...

I think we should all call 1023 every once in a while to ask if the cheetah is still the fastest animal on earth...

Back to the topic - Business vs Home.
Number of Users has nothing to do with it.
Business is charged R55 rand more cos they get their own BUSINESS call-in-center and that call-in-center gets technical staff assigned to the problems at higher priority than home users.
A home user can get the 4 user package as well.

Insofar as routing/priority changes on line usage goes, teklom is considering changing the setup so that business users get higher priority during work hours, but I don't think this has been confirmed nor tasked.

Just phoned 1023 to check on that cheetah thing. Evidently it is still fastest. Call centre operator couldn't tell me the number for directory enquiries tho' :)

Actually your reckoning is wrong, going by the new pricing structure a home user pays R 16.43 more than a VAT registered business user, also you added VAT to the inc cost:
Business DSL512: R 699.00 inc
Telkom ISP: R 249.00 inc
Total: R 948.00 - Input VAT @ R 116.43 = R 831.57 cost to company

Home DSL512: R 599.00 inc
Telkom ISP: R 249.00 inc
Total: R 848.00 no input VAT claim allowed

I don't use Telkom as an ISP so I am not sure whether home/business users pay the same R 249.00 pm charge.

See wht u mean - I was using the old pricing from t31k0m website at the time that it was posted....

That 4 users is a bunch of crap, I had 8 people on my telkom account before and it only allows 2 (for a whole month actually). There are even occurrences where 30 connect on one account. telkom charge you more for an extra number but you don’t get anything extra. What else could we expect from our favorite telkom.

Please select your favorite landline company
A) telkom
B) I don’t have a land line

Thanks for participating in our survey!

Yeah - with an ADSL nat router or internet connection sharing with Windows XP, the four users thing is nothing more than a recommendation from Telkom. NAT treats every outgoing connection as one.

Alkine
07-03-2005, 01:00 PM
Well that was not what I meant, sure you can have nat on the router and the world sees it as 1. But I'm talking about each one at their own place with their own adsl line - on one account. That is a bit diffrent. :)

Now that is different.... but is that really how Telkom sees it (or means it)? Multiple logins?

I doubt it
