MTN's voice clarity seems to be more stereo to my ears.
The Ericsson base station uses different CODEC seems to make some difference
Or
Is it just my ears ?

I've noticed Vodacom is using half rate. This was after I handed my phone in for repair because everybody said I was mumbling. Maybe its not your ears after all.

Maybe in gooku's case the base station is now using Enhanced Full Rate compared to Full Rate or Half Rate previously. EFR sounds much better. The voice quality sounds much more natural and not so scratchy.
I've noticed in Stellenbosch, one of the main 1800 MHz towers on Papegaaiberg uses Half Rate, and sometimes the 900 MHz one as well. Maybe they're changing back to Half Rate to provide for more speech network capacity.
It's very easy to check if you've got an old DCT3 type Nokia with Netmonitor enabled like a 5110, 6110 or 3310.

I also noticed it on the 1800MHz sites. You sit on a macro and when you make a call you get handed over to a 1800MHz site and then the EFR drops to HR. I recon with GPRS/3G taking of they are allocating more timeslots to GRPS hence ending up a bit short on the voice side so they enable HR. Tried to disable it on my mobile but you can't anymore with the new software :-(
