I never knew the gautrain had anything to do with the world cup, i thought it was the new bus system.

It was never a 2010 project. It was planned long before we were given the rights to the WC. At the moment the project is due to finish on 8 June, so many people think that they are related.
@ chrisonderstall, that article doesn't say that the Gautrain won't be ready. 0_O

we always knew that, it was initially put into the 2010 bid but then they removed it

Cyber dude, they have done so much of the ground work man, i cannot believe how much they have done, they will surely be finished.
I find it amazing how fast they have done most of the work what i have seen.

Visiting joburg recently and was amazed by the amount of construction going on. A lot has changed already in the 1.5 years I've been away. Lol.. and I thought Cape Town was fast.
I'm sure the major routes will be done in time for the world cup, but I'm sure that a lot of the constructions are routine upgrades that have no correlation to the World Cup.

Guys, this is the same person who claimed Green Point wouldn't be ready.. then ran away when he's little "theory" was shot down for the rubbish that it is.
Chris, the Gautrain is not MEANT to be completed for the WC... Parts of it maybe, but not all of it.

I think it was a stretch from the airport that is intended to be ready, not sure about which segments they intend to have up though.
Blah!Blah!

Hopefully he just misread the article. I would hate to think that he is one of those 'World Cup will fail' retards.
lol maybe articles like this one makes them feel that way, and since it is on a overseas site who knows how it will effect "visitors" there are more negative articles overseas than positive ones

Either it is a magic event or it becomes our worst nightmare only time will tell.
Holland to win anyway ;)

I know there are quite a few biased international reports about SA, they're quite sad really.:(
As for Holland, no chance bud. No European team has ever won outside of Europe.

Um, I was never under the impression that it was SUPPOSED to be ready for the WC... the two projects are not really related... unless you are just commiserating the fact that it was never planned to be ready for the WC?

But there was always talk of the Sandton-Airport link being ready for the World Cup.

There are a number of such projects all over the country! The problem has always been the same though how to justify the costs of such projects when housing remains the BIG issue that we can't keep up with(city growth rates/urbanisation of rural populous). The WC was an excellent excuse, if you will, to allow for funding to be approved faster for upgrades etc.

Ja, but that was just a lucky coincidence, never a guarantee or a pre-requisite.

Not a 2010 project BUT its governmnts own fault for linking the two.
When people talk about transport preparations for 2010, the first thing they mention is this high speed train, not BRT or taxi's or any other infrastructure projects.
With the right amount of money, the gautrain can be ready end may.
IMO its more important for it to be ready, because 2010 after all is about marketing the country, so i think its worth the extra billion
