What is the hostname/IP address to use of a SMTP server for outbound email when connecting to GPRS/EDGE on MTN? I have been using my "old" Nokia 3650 for quite a lot of months to retrieve emails from my Telkom POP3 account successfully, but I'm not able to send emails. I can't use the normal Telkom SMTP server because it won't allow relaying from another IP subnet (the MTN GPRS/EDGE) one. I have tried using mail.mtnice.co.za but it also doesn't work. I have a suspicion that it requires authentication. The standard Symbian email client in the Nokia 3650 only has one setting for username and password, which it is using to authenticate against the POP3 server.

Any help will be appreciated.

Not sure if you have to ask MTN to enable this ( if so, dial 1555 ), but I have been using the smtp server : mail.mtn.co.za without any problems ( PC > BT > 6820 > GPRS > MTN )

Hope this helps

I used the SMTP server without to many problems. Hoverver, I found that I am unable to send E-mail to the webmail.co.za or homemail.co.za domains.

I received an error message like this:

----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----
<user123@webmail.co.za>
(reason: 554 mx4.wm.co.za ESMTP not accepting messages)

----- Transcript of session follows -----
... while talking to mx2.wm.co.za.:
<<< 554 mx2.mailbox.co.za ESMTP not accepting messages
... while talking to mx5.wm.co.za.:

<<< 554 mx5.wm.co.za ESMTP not accepting messages
... while talking to mx1.wm.co.za.:

<<< 554 mx1.wm.co.za ESMTP not accepting messages
... while talking to mx3.wm.co.za.:

554 5.0.0 <user123@webmail.co.za>... Service unavailable

I just wonder if the problem is at WebMail, or is the MTN SMTP server on a spam black list?

Hi,

first of all, sorry for bringing this thread back from the dead. I stumbled across it in Google.

I have the same problem that Zaphod describes, only that my mail server is in Germany (fortunately under my control). By my knowledge it is also not blacklisted, and the only destination I have this problem with is webmail.co.za.

I am going to make a lame attempt at contacting their server admins - Email doesn't work. But if anyone has some advice for me, I'd be very grateful.
