I heard they only had this issue on Toshiba Satilite Notebooks? Am I mistaken?
Maybe you can swap it out for anoter type of card.
Here are 2 threads on the cards:

Read through these and maybe you can get a solution.

I was just concerned it's the card giving you uphill. Have you tried it anywhere else?
Maybe we should start a laptop 'blacklist' detailing problematic laptops?

ok I have to take the "working fine" back now - my Dashboard has crapped itself now after using it for a week as described in
http://www.mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=19132
edited again: the error was caused by vodacom disabling data service on the SIM, so everything works well again

I have had the opportunity of first using the Option card, which was replaced with a Novatel card when the Option card went south. There is simply no comparison between the two. Whereas the dashboard software gave problems 10% percent of the time with the Option card (which could be eliminated by not using the dashboard software), the Novatel card and software require at least three tries each time before the combination start working. It's either a matter of having to remove the card at least once, or restarting the software once of twice, which then often gives an illegal operation type error, or simply just hangs. The Novatel card can't be used without the dashboard software and I have twice this week when under pressure, been on the verge of returning the card to Vodacom. Only problem is, I really need this service and the Option card is no longer available. I'm seriously considering going back to the old dial up via cell phone with Bluetooth connection on my laptop – using this card is frustrating. (By the way, I'm using the card with a Dell D800 laptop).

949BFN,
I'm asking around for an Option for you.
You've probably answered this before: Have you had someone look at your Novatel and tried it in another machine / another card in your laptop.
Also, any idea why the Option broke?
Just wondering.

The story of the Option card is a bit more involved than previously conveyed. It's not really my option card that went south, but that of my partner. We are three partners, each with a 3G card. One of the partners had problems with his card right from the outset, whereas the other two worked fine. Initially I thought that was my partner using it incorrectly. He kept on complaining and I eventually swapped cards with him when investigating the problem (since I'm the one looking after the IT needs of our practice). By doing that, I discovered that his card was faulty. Vodacom immediately and without any hassle, exchanged the card, but unfortunately (in my opinion) with a Novatel card. Since I gave by partner my Option card, I'm now stuck with the Novatel one (he'll never be able to use the Novatel card because of all its issues). Long story short – it's not my Option card that broke, but that of my partner, and in actual fact, it did not broke, but was faulty from the start. The problem was that it would not get any GSM signal. Initially it would get a signal one out of say four times of continuous inserting and removing it, but the problem got worse and eventually it simply did not get any signal.
I haven't tried the card on another laptop – don't think the odds of getting two faulty cards in succession are that great. But more importantly, it's such a hassle to change from the Option to the Novatel card, as it appears that the software (dashboard), needs to be removed and re-installed as well. (And I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but I'm quite sure (after this happening more than once) that the removal of the dashboard software, messes up the internal Wireless LAN software/drivers on the laptop to such an extent that it needs to be re-installed afterwards as well.

I wonder if there's not more going on here than just a faulty card / installation.
For example, you should not need to uninstall the software when swapping cards. I've installed once and use three different cards without fail.
What you could try is to delete and recreate the profiles. We've had some reports that this fixes some stability problems.
Maybe you can try this in the mean-time?

949bfn youre quite correct that the internal wifi sometimes goes with the uninstall of the sftwr, reason:resources duplicated by the novatel crd, thus when uninstalling the novatel it subsequently deletes the resource it was using.....that being the same as the internal wifi (if this is the case ,when using your wifi again you should receive an internal error code 10).have a look at which resources the wifi is occupying then try changing the config..............if all else fails ....u know the rest.....ps still no joy on my users mecer....had to get muztek to upgrade bios..........will post results
