I found it back in 1997 or 98. Nice source of public domain and rare books.

thought I would put it out there for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.
Known about it for year but just recently got a whole bunch of the Jane Austen books for the wife off there. Dont have everything as people are sticy about the whole copyright thing, but its an awesome idea and they can use all the help they can get with regards to proofreading etc.

Jane Austen books should all be in the PUBLIC DOMAIN. She wrote in English so the translation should also not be COPYRIGHTED either.

Any book more than 5 years old should be in public domain imho

Agreed... it gives the author enough time to make a good profit.

Nah - I'm with the thinking it should be longer... books are different to movies/games. 30-50 years is about right for all the money to be made. Though, the book being free doesn't give just anyone the rights to use it. Any spin-offs should remain with the author.

Copyright law originated along those lines. To give enough time for the creator to make some money, not to lock it up as exclusive ownership.

True. Look at Mickey Mouse - he's still copyrighted - yet Mickey Mouse first appeared before WW2.
