I have just joined the forum, and desperately need some help. I am really frustrated. I purchased a new factory unlocked Iphone 3GS from Cellucity, and put my MTN simcard in it (I am on an MTN contract), activated it, registered etc. I could not get a signal, so I took it to an istore, and the guy put his Vodacom sim card in, andf it worked. I then put my MTN sim card in, and it worked. However, since then it has worked sporadically with MTN for a bit, but I now struggle to get a signal. When I turn it on, it spends a long time searching, and then shows "No Service". I move outside, go to another area, and still nothing happens. I turn it on and off a few times and then for no reason, I get an MTN signal. I then loose it again for no apparent reason. I have 3G MTN sim card, have set it to look for the MTN network and not automatic on settings. Please can someone tell me if I have not done something I should have, or am missing some settings, or what the possible reason could be.

As far as I know you need to have a Vodacom sim in the phone when you activate the device with Itunes as MTN is not a authorized distributer.

I have been using mtn network on my 2g 3g and now my 3gs 32gb without a hitch. Mtn Coverage in your area might be the problem.

You don't need a vodacom sim to activate your iphone, the iphone is unlocked in south africa, so you can activate it with any sime card you want, the problem might be the sim card itself.

I have had my iphone since january, and have never used a vodacom sim to activate it

I had the same problem but then realised it was probably a problem with mtn coverage caus my friend with another phone also on mtn struggled to get signal when he visited me at my offices...

i also had a rare problem at CT airport but i turned it off/on and everything was fine again. I have a feeling its an mtn problem because iv used my iphone on quite a few networks overseas as well with different sim cards without problems.
