I know WA said "The length of the account trial may be subject to change and the 10GB cap for both local and international access is only valid during the trial period." but does anyone have even a vague idea of how long the trial will run for? I will be out of the country for two weeks in Oct, so I might miss out.

They claim there will be big price changes as a result of this, but then again SEACOM claimed the same thing and look what happened.

Keep your fingers crossed though.

hopefully the whole "people flocking to Afrihost" thing has been noticed by WA and they realise that if they drop their prices they will benefit. The market is not static, we will move to the ISP that offers the better deal.

I see they only have 367 users active on the trial at the moment according to their Website.

If they only activate that amount every day, they are going to have 2,569 users active by the end of the trial which falls way short of their apparent 8,000 signups.

I'm sure WA is going to give to their existing customers first.

We are starting off slow and ironing out the major issues before adding bulk users to the trial. Increments will be around 1200 per day once we are sure our network is capable of these loads.

Regarding WA customers first, unfortunately we are not able to differentiate between our customers and non customers because some used gmail or other accounts so we decided to go first come first serve.

At the moment the 367 trial users have burned through 200 Gigs

Not sure I agree porchrat, there is something called customer loyalty, that's a two way street, why be loyal if you aren't being looked after.

Quick question, other than being literate are you a WA customer or are you pretending to understand what the real issue is here!

I agree with the whole customer loyalty thing and I could understand where you guys were coming from IF you didn't get a piece of the free 10GB action, but you DID. Only WA customers who won't be receiving a free 10GB can complain. The rest are complaining about nothing as they haven't suffered at all.

If you guys could point out how you have been negatively affected then great and I'm sorry for you. Otherwise don't complain. I mean you are really going to tell me that you are complaining because someone who isn't a WA customer is getting their free 10GB before you get your free 10GB? How petty is that, just be happy that you have a free 10GB that you didn't have before.

To answer you question I am most definitely not a WA customer, I go where the bandwidth is cheapest and feel no sense of loyalty towards my ISP. WA is neither the cheapest nor the most reliable and therefore I avoid them.

Using Telkom ADSL line I am having problems with the DNS

Used IPCP DNS request -- which gave me the numbers you mention above

DNS & Gateway

BTW -- does WA have a proxy that one can use ????

Need to check once the WA DNS is working if SAIX will allow access to their Proxy from the WA IP pool.

However using those WA DNS servers does not resolve ANYTHING for me ???

IF I use an IP address -- OK everything works

Did an NSLookup but it appears that the WebAfrica domain is not reflected anywhere -- well at least not at IGUBU -- unless I am doing something wrong

Went back to the DO Broadband and all is working.

Hard to download when you cannot resolve any web sites

Test Youtube please.

YouTube's quite fast, but they're currently having a problem with it not loading, walan is looking into it now so hopefully will fix it.

Yeah...pretty much NO video loads for me on Youtube.

I PM'ed walan and hopefully it'll get sorted.

Youtube was giving issues with the proxies. It was working for 80% but 20% nothing. Alan's turning it off now. I know the engineers are a bit exhausted pulling all nighters and are getting some zzzz's

Just a few things as well:
- Unshaped/shaped profiles are the same at this stage (this will change)
- Over the next month and ongoing we'll be making a lot of optimisations (especially on local) in terms of routing and will continue to do so. However these take much longer than caching/routing etc tweaks we currently doing.
- Further on into the trial we going to do full stress testing, where we want to overload the network and see how it performs (esp shaped vs unshaped)

Thanks for all the feedback. The guys will follow up tomorrow with the outstanding forum posts.

Feo,
Are you logged IN with a Youtube account when you try to view the videos? If you are, just log out and try and view the video again. If that works, post it here.

Yesterday I couldn't view any Youtube videos but it worked when I logged OUT of my Youtube account and viewed the videos as a guest user. When I log in to my Youtube account, the videos give me that error again.

Quite weird since I only get this problem on the WA trial account. When I switch back to my normal adsl account, then I can watch Youtube videos when I'm both logged in and out of my Youtube account.

Just tried that now and videos don't load in either case...when logged in or not.

Hah. Think waroop might be getting carried away there. Assuming average of 500kbps (384, 1mbp, 4mps lines) that's a 4gbps link that would be required for a 1:1 contention ratio. (far more capacity than we have). The whole idea behind contention is that different users pull content (at presumably max speed) at different times. Typical ADSL is between 20:1 contention.

Another thing to keep in mind though is that contention typically is different for directly local (DSLAM), local (SA), and international.

I was going to say - your seriously pushing it there. No way you could handle 8000 users all maxed out.

Thats why there's contention ratios.

I have a shaped account... and no problems so far... except for the already mentioned youtube glitches.

Perhaps due to contention ratios etc... but my speed with WA is faster than Cybersmart. It very really drops below max on WA, where CS is around 10-18KBs slower.

Torrents are also flying and no bottle-necks either with WA, I can still do the browsing thing, unlike CS where everything grinds to a halt while torrenting.

WA at the moment is very impressive! Followed by Afrihost. Cybersmart has much catching up to do at the moment, speed-wise and cost wise. I doubt I will keep them beyond next month (was much hoohaa about new 4GB packages October, still 3GB with me... no changes in cost or cap).....

I haven't experienced any problems with it yet. I haven't experienced the issues that others seem to be experiencing. Nothing but smooth sailing.

We estimate that we will require about 7-14 days to collect adequate data to fully optimise the network. We do however reserve the right to extend or shorten the trial should the need arise.

Very impressed with the free trial account. Downloading torrents were a bit slow today, 6-7 KB but are running faster now, 17-22KB.

If we have issues to report where do we report them, or is this just a cleaver marketing ploy. How many trialists will sign up for accounts?
