Celli said Telkom is also addressing the issue of high ADSL costs. “We will announce a number of price reductions over the next two months as part of our short term strategy, but I cannot say what our long term strategy is going to be.”

mmm.. much like the current strategy... Short Term: reduct ADSL by R80 just before the ICASA hearings, and in really small font, state "Only valid till August", then long term, raise the prices again.

These people must go **** themselves.

“Our research shows that the average user utilisation is well below 3GB, so it seems sufficient.”

Now I do not know what research background he has, but his research strategy is completely flawed. How on earth can anybody say: there is a 3 Gig cap, after that you get cut off, Eureka: very few users actually go over the cap, therefore they don’t need additional bandwidth.

Dr. Celli…maybe time to correct this flawed statement?

RPM

Because of the 3GB cap, I can't use Telkom Crippled ADSL for Multimedia streaming.

I know of people who deliberately don't do many things and actively manage their bandwidth usage.

Now we are getting penalised by statements like that.

Ok, the message is clear: Get EVERYBODY you know wit ADSL to realy go for it on the last day of the month and see how much they can exceed their caps by doing all the things you can't do the rest of the month because of the unique way Telkom structured its ADSL offerings.

I trust ICASA will demand monthly feedback on these figures!

The deficit in the local loop can be a fact, but it is a problem on Telkom side:
1) With so little users, they have trouble getting economies of scale
2) Inefficient management
3) Bad planning

If they had a competitor they would be forced to make a profit on the local loop without raising prizes - that is what competition is about, not slashing the profit, but forcing better and more efficient business practices. Even if Telkom can show, black on white, that they are running a deficit, ICASA should force them to reduce their price, which would force them to be more efficient. As an aside, firing workers does not up efficiency automatically - they have to develop a NEW BUSINESS MODEL, and be commited to implementing it.

Could that be their Markinor survey?

"I know of people who deliberately don't do many things and actively manage their bandwidth usage."

Aint that the truth, how many times have you wanted to download something and had a look at your cap and had to wait until next month.

My Fiance is a High Energy Physist, doing research through Jlabs in the USA. I cant even begin to tell you how many times she has come and asked me if she can download the lastest test results from the lab in Jefferson and I've had to tell her that we cant now because we will hit our cap (Most times I cant at all as the files run between 700 megs and 4 gigs, if not bigger), and she is forced to rush out in the middle of the night to the lab she is doing the research for here in SA to go download her data so she can do her work

I wouldn't trust the Telkom/Markinor/Ooooo-we're-in-bed-together-playing-footsie survey as far as I could throw a bunch of Telkom execs.

Not possible. They're too slippery to catch!!!
