From Blackberrycool.com:

The official release of OS 5 features:

More responsive experience and includes usability and visual enhancements such as inertial scrolling, spin boxes that make it easier to set dates and times, gradient shading on buttons and more use of animation.
Typing accuracy and selection have been significantly refined.
BlackBerry Browser improved with faster JavaScript and CSS processing as well as support for Gears and BlackBerry Widgets

I'm just worried about losing all my apps and bookmarks but its very tempting.

I don't believe it's an official release yet. You won't lose anything but your apps will go back to their state when you first installed it.

It's not official yet - some apps won't work as they have not been ported over to OS5 yet.. So just confirm on Google that they have been ported and will work fine on os5

whenever i update to an OS5 my browser stops working and i cant select "internet browser" in options:( anyone have a fix or a reason for this?

oronte

The reason is it's a beta, you can't expect things to work properly on a beta.

I doubt it's because its a beta, people on the international forums can still use their browsers with no problem. I think it might have to do with our service providers

While it would be nice to blame them, they have issued working firmware for all Blackberries, you chose to use a beta that not even RIM supports you really can't expect 100% functinality. It also depends on the version of the OS you tested and how the networks implment their service, which is the reason they each issue their own firmware.

After reading about the hassles people are experiencing I am definitely going to wait. But it sounds like the official release is going to be awesome.

1. New version is on its way out which will allow to choice bis/bes/tcp connection (testing it at the moment)
2. Vodacom/mtn needs to update there service books or upgrade from bis 2.7 to bis 2.8 and it should work.

OS 5 is 100000x better than os 4.7

how do you update to OS5 manually through Desktop Manager? Everytime it checks for an update to my device it says I have the latest? 4.x ?

go to http://www.blackberryos.com and search for the right os for your device download and install it to, delete vender file from C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader\. Connect to desktop manager and follow steps :)

I just had the most frustrating week with my updated BB Curve. Basically when you upgrade your ROM to anything that Vodacom does not support ie: version 5.0 beta, the BIS will not work coz Vodacom's BES does not support the OS Service Books!

Internet functions that will work after an OS upgrade:
- Gtalk, Facebook
- Opera, BOLT
- Email
- BB Instant Chat

Things that will not work:
- Blackberry Browser
- Vodafone live
- Installing any applications

SOLUTION:
I had to take my BB into a Vodacare shop and get them to downgrade it. All BBs will be affected.

HOW TO KNOW THAT YOU ARE SCREWED:
After your upgrade, opening any website (except for http://mobile.blackberry.com) will fail with this alert:
"THIS IS A WI-FI SERVICE"

Go figure

Mine worked through vodafone live and with a bit of service book "hacking" got the rest to work.

Hi w1twolf. Is it possible for me to upgrade my BB 8310 to OS 5? Or, what is the latest OS that is supported by my phone that will make it look like the 8900 OS wise? I currently running 4.5 (supported by Vodacom). I really dont want to screw up my phone either hehe.

Oh ok. its alright. I got a pretty cool theme that has a rotating ring on the home screen with icons that looks like the 8900 anyway. I just thought it would be cool to have a new OS. Thanks w1twolf.

I must remind you that RIM's upgrade of BIS infrastructure is set by them depending on the region a carrier falls under.

Vodacom runs BIS 2.7 as well as MTN who run the same.

Both fall under the EMEA region and the "upgrade" to BIS 2.8 will be done for that region meaning that BOTH carriers will have the new functionality that BIS 2.8 does offer.

RIM being RIM does not always issue changelogs and they fairly complicated legally , take a look at this site to see how finicky they can get.

Technically speaking the carrier you subscribe to on your BIS plan is under no obligation to support you should you be running an OS that is NOT found for download on that carriers website and supported on their networks (ie you are ON your OWN) and the support you receive from forums are on a casual basis.

I am not against what you are asking (I download a new OS as soon as its available but know that if it breaks then I fix it myself)

Fully agree with what you say ! I am willing to help and give advice, but if it breaks your phone, dont blame me :)

I also cant leave new os alone, on phones and computers. Supose that is why i do what i do from day to day :)

mmm ok...ill rather just leave it then. no point in fixing something that is not broken...was mere curiousity :-)

Nah dont stress, i have done it so many times. There is ways to recover it if something goes wrong.

run Desktop Manager , do a full backup.

download your new OS , uninstall the old one , install the new OS.

delete the vendor.xml file in program files -> common files -> research in motion -> apploader

then run apploader.exe and voila - YES you can remain connected to the internet when doing the OS upgrade as long as you DO NOT open Desktop Manager.

That is the simplest and most concise answer you going to get WITHOUT looking on the Blackberry forums internet-wide.

OK...last question. What would happen if I download the 8520 4.6 software from Vodacoms site and installed that on my Blackberry 8310? Would that work and would I get the nice theme with it?

This sucks. I demand that RIM release a new OS for the 8310 that looks as nice as the one for the 8520! :D

Will created a new thread on how to do it as alot of people are asking me to do so. That is if i am allowed to do so. But it isnt for the faint hearted.

I have a blackberry tour with 5.0.0.287 on it at the moment. Maybe they have updated service books, login to your bis site and resend service books, just did with mine and all is working 100%

Go for it and post the process as we discussed.

Remeber that it is quite terse (crap) when doing service book hacking but I'm sure one RIM gives the carries BIS 2.8 it won't be required to do so anymore.

More info here ....

According to the internet it has only be released to the North American carriers at this point in time. See 2nd link posted.

For those having issues with browser do the following:

Got to options, advance, service books. Hold alt down and press sbeb. Should say legacy enable. Resend service books.
